Look Out, Emerald Counties…First Wildfire Big Enough to Need a Copter This Morning

Smoke rising from a fire northeast of Leggett as seen from the #2 Pratt Mt Alert Wilfire Cam.

Early this morning, residents north of Leggett discovered a wildfire burning in timberland.

The first reports indicate the fire was several acres and about 9:25 a.m., a dispatcher requested Calfire’s helicopter to respond to the scene. The chopper was still on the scene as of 1 p.m. but reports indicate firefighters were bringing it under control.

There were no structures involved and no evacuations called for, according to reports over the scanner.

Time to do some careful torch work burn the rat nests and make some space to throw cut brush on, burn now, not in the summer. If the smog nazis say no then you have to do it so the idiots on the 101 don’t call 911.

We’ve been clearing and burning piles for the past week. Still a foot and a half of snow here. Dig out a spot and pile up dry limbs with green stuff on top.

Too much work, let the rats gather the kindling, cut and throw all the green stuff on you can. That’s what works for me, sometimes it takes off and gets interesting.

This morning at 3200 ft. in Northern Mendocino, there was 20% humidity and 30 mph winds. Enough to spread fire even if the ground seems damp. If you’re burning piles, check the weather and make sure the remnants are out cold at the end of every day. Otherwise, when the wind comes up at night, you might get a surprise.

And a potentially nasty one, at that.
