Earlier today, South Fork High School and Miranda Junior High campuses were locked down after a staff member heard rumors of a possible threat. Staff administrators contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) who responded immediately to the Miranda campus. During the investigation, a student was detained after the discovery of a replica gun and unidentified pills.

According to Samantha Karges, Public Information Specialist for the HCSO, “The juvenile was found in possession of various pills on his person. However, those pills have not been identified at this time so it is unknown whether they were controlled substances.”

Karges reported, “The juvenile has been booked into juvenile hall on charges of possession of a firearm in a school zone (PC 626.9).”

In a statement to RHBB, the school district representative emphasized, ” …There was no threat to students on campus at any time.”

What a crock of poopie

Doesn’t a replica gun mean that it cannot fire real bullets?

It would be who’ve the officers to identify the pills like any person can do off of the Internet using the numbers on the pills.

Go fight real crime. This boy probably has a rough home life and his medicating to not feel the pain and shame of being abandoned and alone. Maybe I’m way off base if I am I apologize to everyone involved.

There are fentanyl dealers rapists and murderers out there that need to be cut most of them are police officers that shoot kids for a bullet holes for no fucking good reason. Fight real crime who are the real criminals?

Ask yourself these questions please.

The problem is that a replica gun looks very real and citizens and police must make an instant decision on response. To hesitate can mean death to bystanders. Flashing a replica is terrorizing and an attempt at suicide by citizen or cop. Isn’t that obvious? You climb through somebody’s with your replica: ha ha, can’t shoot me! Trick or treat!

This app won’t let me edit. I popped the asterisk and it said “edit” but it wouldn’t let me. . . . Climb through somebody’s WINDOW. . .

Cannot believe I have to say this to anyone but no one can tell it’s a replica until they are close enough to read the tiny engravings on the side of the barrel. And due to the current climate of American schools (ya know the mass shootings in the news every other week and at least once a month) assuming a child with any type of firearm; replicas, BB guns and literally anything that resembles a firearm can be a threat is the right move. I don’t give a shit about the kids home life to be honest. Even a child with a replica handgun at school should be expelled and put through some type of program. If I had to do that for getting caught with weed in the 9th grade, then this child should damn sure get the similar treatment. Cannot believe I had to waste valuable minutes of my life to explain something so ridiculously obvious.

My kids grew up with gun sense but these pills scare me. Please talk to your kids about addiction and how sneaky it is

Also talk to your kids about Peer Pressure! Recently I read an obituary where it was obvious the kid that died took the drugs because of peer pressure. Curiousity plays a part for teenagers but without access to the drugs, and possible Peer Pressure, many will not be tempted to try whatever bathtub brew their friend is passing out.

I know plenty of kids who jacked people, pistol whipped people and caused plenty of mayhem with an air pistol. I’m not saying fuck this kid but let’s not down play kids trying to act like gangsters.

Where have you been? Lucky he wasn’t killed. Remember back in the good ol days, pre covid, when all kids loved school? Remember the discussions of having school staff armed so they could quickly shoot a kid waving a gun? Was not a security guard at Parkland made into a sacrificial goat for not getting killed too? We take guns pretty seriously at our prison training facilities.

You’re all over the place. Sounds like you have an axe to grind against law enforcement. A replica gun can get someone killed just as fast as brandishing a real gun. Pills are NEVER ok. If they’re legit, why does he have them? If they’re fakes, it’s an OD waiting to happen. The kid needs intervention

A really nice looking gun I’ve always liked was the 1875 Remington Replica. It’s not 100+ years old. It’s a replica of that old gun. Shoots real bullets. It’ll kill you dead. Not all replicas are toys. Maybe in this case. But, if the toy didn’t “look” real, it wouldn’t be a replica. Knew a guy years back that built a replica Lamborghini. He wrapped it around a tree just like a real Lamborghini.

Regardless of it being a replica or not, it’s wrong! You don’t bring a replica gun to school! That’s just ludicrous. With so many school shootings over the last few years does make this concerning. Being a parent and receiving a message that states my child is in lockdown because of a firearm is a very terrifying moment! You don’t know what’s actually happening and you can’t call the admin because of lockdown. Some students don’t get cell service in Miranda either.
This kid that did this didn’t come to school not knowing you can’t bring a fake gun to school. He’s already on probation, so let’s not pretend this is just an unfortunate accident. This kid needs help though. He needs some behavioral therapy and I’ll bet he won’t get it. Because that’s how our system works. They’ll keep him in juvi for a while, no help there though. Then he’ll be sent home and nothing will change. Yes, this does start with the parents and I do believe they should be held accountable as well. Kids make alot of their own choices, but it all starts with home.

I’ve been gone from Humboldt for half my life (left in 1982, now am 80). Here I am, 2,800 miles away in rural south-central Pennsylvania. Thank you Kym and all for keeping us all informed about life in Humboldt. Yes, pills and guns, fake or not, are causes for concern. Appropriate responses are needed. Appropriate includes some kind of constructive intervention that is attuned to the specific situation–and that includes a follow up that does not turn this individual into a permanent criminal.

No. He is not a “bad apple”.

It is nice of you to take an anonymous shot at a child. Way to punch up.
