Arcata: ‘Learn More About King Tides and Sea Level Rise on January 21st’

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

King Tide events show projections of what “normal” tide levels could look like in the future as a result of sea level rise, and the City of Arcata encourages the community to learn more about King Tides and sea level rise.

Community members are invited to join sea level rise expert Aldaron Laird for a virtual talk presented by Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) on King Tides on Humboldt Bay: A Preview of Sea Level Rise on Friday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Laird has mapped and studied Wigi (Humboldt Bay) for twenty years and has been promoting a regional approach to sea level rise for over a decade. He has co-founded the Humboldt State University’s Sea Level Rise Initiative, recently launched Humboldt State University’s Humboldt Sea Level Rise Public Forum, and his photographs of Humboldt Bay have been featured at the Morris Graves Museum of Art.

Laird’s talk is free and open to the public and can be accessed online at humboldtstate.zoom.us/j/81524243096. For more information on attending, please call (707) 826-2359.

Arcata residents and visitors are also invited to visit the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center now through February to view photographic works featuring local images of the King Tides by Aldaron Laird. The Interpretive Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 569 S G Street. Face coverings are required to enter the Interpretive Center regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. For more information, please call (707) 826-2359.

The Coastal Commission is still seeking assistance with photo-documenting water levels during the recent King Tide events which took place Saturday, January 1 through Monday, January 3. Instructions on how to upload photos to the California Coastal Commission’s King Tide story map can be found at coastal.ca.gov/kingtides, and images of the tides on Arcata Bay, local creeks and streams and locations throughout Humboldt County are welcome and encouraged.

For more information about King Tides and sea level rise in Arcata, please contact the Community Development Department at (707) 707-822-5955.

Maybe I’ll go just so I can ask Mr. Laird how much consideration he gives to plate tectonics and the settling of filled lands (such as those surrounding the bay) when calculating relative sea-level rise.

Or maybe the four-foot uplift like in Petrolia.

Steve and Ernie, he’s an expert and takes Everything in to consideration including uplift and settling. I’ve read many of his writings and he has a real good understanding of our future ocean rise scenarios…it’s like learning about history that’s going to happen soon!

When we get that 9.0 there’s going to be water everywhere.

Make no mistake, I accept Aldaron Laird as foremost expert on sea level rise. It’s just that there are so many other variables at play. Mother Nature is a bitch.

In what world?
Laird sat on the BOD’s for Humboldt Bay Municipal Water Department while the dunes were stripped of vegetation around HBMWDs own coastal water main,
destabilizing the dunes and draining the wetlands, destroying habitat and resilience, then when confronted with the facts, denied it.

Our loss of coastal wetlands is not just immoral it is unlawful and cruel to wildlife and migratory birds, benefitting the pockets of a few.
