1 New Hospitalization, 478 New Cases Reported Since Friday

Press release from Humboldt County Public Health:

Humboldt County Public Health reported today 478 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, bringing to 12,283 the total number of residents who have tested positive for the virus. One new hospitalization, a resident in their 50s, was also reported.

Over the weekend, 270 individuals were vaccinated at Public Health clinics held at two sites in Eureka that included pediatric, first and second doses and additional doses and boosters.

As part of ongoing monitoring, samples of positive COVID-19 cases from primarily health care staff tested last week by the Humboldt County Public Health Lab suggest that the Omicron variant is increasing in the community. Additional samples from the state have confirmed cases of Omicron from late December and early January. Increasing case counts and percent test positivity also suggest that there is rapidly increasing Omicron in Humboldt County.

Health officials said that hospitalizations, rather than positive case numbers, are the best indicator of how the county is being impacted in the most recent surge of cases. Vaccines and boosters provide an increased level of protection from Omicron, Delta and other variants.

Those individuals who are fully vaccinated or boosted typically develop milder symptoms, shorter illness duration and have fewer hospitalizations and less severe outcomes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, unvaccinated adults are more than 8 times more likely to be hospitalized than those adults who are fully vaccinated. Locally, that number is currently 17 times higher.

Public Health officials continue to stress that residents, especially those who are unvaccinated, continue to protect themselves and their families from all COVID-19 variants by following mask requirements in public settings, socially distancing and getting vaccinated or boosted when eligible to do so.

As always, Humboldt County’s vaccination and testing services are available free of charge. Although walk-ins are allowed at most regular Public Health clinics and many pharmacy vaccination sites, an increase in demand for boosters has caused delays at some locations. As a result, appointments are required for pediatric clinics and for clinics at Public Health’s main office. Appointments are strongly recommended for all other clinics and are the best way to ensure a shot is available during your visit. Appointments can be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.

Vaccines, including boosters, are available at local pharmacies. To check the availability of a specific vaccine, visit the vaccines.gov page, or text your ZIP code to 438829 to locate a nearby pharmacy offering vaccines.

See the schedule below for specific Public Health vaccination and testing clinic dates, times, locations and available services. Questions about clinic services can be directed to the Joint Information Center at 1-707-441-5000.

Are you this person –

For more than a year, I did everything that public-health authorities told me to do. I wore masks. I canceled vacations. I made sacrifices. I got vaccinated. I got boosted. I’m happy to get boosted again. But this virus doesn’t stop. Year over year, the infections don’t decrease. Instead, virulence for people like me is decreasing, either because the virus is changing, or because of growing population immunity, or both. Americans should stop pointlessly guilting themselves about all these cases. In the past week, daily confirmed COVID cases per capita were higher than the U.S. in Ireland, Greece, Iceland, Denmark, France, the U.K., Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, and even Australia, one of the most COVID-cautious countries in the world. As the coronavirus continues its unstoppable march toward endemicity, our attitude toward the virus should follow a similar path toward stoicism. COVID is becoming something like the seasonal flu for most people who keep up with their shots, so I’m prepared to treat this like I’ve treated the flu: by basically not worrying about it and living my life normally.

Or this person –

Why on earth would we suddenly relax measures now, during the largest statistical wave of COVID ever recorded in the U.S.? We shouldn’t treat Omicron like any old seasonal flu, because it’s not like any old seasonal flu. It’s likely deadlier for those without immunity and almost certainly several times more transmissible for everybody else. We have no idea what the effects of Omicron on long COVID will be, but evidence of lingering symptoms should make us wary of just letting tens of millions of people get needlessly infected. Moreover, the health-care system is already worn down and at risk of being overloaded. Record-high caseloads are societally debilitating, creating long chains of infections that are bound to reach some immunocompromised people and the elderly, thus causing needless death. For all these reasons, we should take individual measures to throttle the spread of this virus.

It’s a very simple dislay of the various attitudes that the public must have by this time. But it is a published opinion page from the Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/01/covid-omicron-vaccination-rashomon/621199/

His conclusions-

“My synthesis view is that we should start with the obvious. If I were COVID czar, my rules for early 2022 would be to try desperately to keep schools open and in person, follow through on vaccine mandates for nursing homes, distribute free rapid tests to allow people to identify their own infectiousness when they mix households with vulnerable people, and expand vaccine PSA programs, since the vaccines seem by far the most effective intervention against the virus. If we’re lucky, on the other side of this Omicron wave, “vaccinated and done” won’t be one of many viewpoints in an unfolding COVID Rashomon. It will be something like reality.”

The “stuff your vaccines” part is not in the article. I agree links for direct quotes should be required.

But they haven’t nearly lived up to their promise. The public was sold the preliminary results of trials that showed essentially 100% efficacy against death and 95%+ efficacy against “serious illness “.

The reality is appearing to be that they are much much less effective than that. Those were numbers numbers the 2 dose regimen as well. Now they’re trying to shoe horn in the third dose and act like it’s all working like they promised

It will just be considered your third dose in no time at all, when they start considering 3 initial doses the new minimum standard.

How qbout eggs in the mid 80’s. Now we know eggs are extremely good for you with a runny yolk. It is really good for modulating hormones. Lately I’ve been trying to study and memorize less covid facts and recently have been learning alot about hormones. These guys are pesky and finicky as little fucks. Sleep ,stress, diet all effect them and they effect how metabolize build muscle and feel happy 😊. My biggest pet peeve is sweet juice, aven veggie juiced, it pumps straight into blood stream spikes insulin. Please can we stop with juices? I’m looking forward to glucoseometer tech getting more affordable as a wearabl, right now it’s 400. I’m waiting. Stay healthy and happy everyone!

They say meditation beats covid now. And what about pushing thereuputics like Trump advocated early in the pandemic?

Meditating for a few minutes each day may be the first step in helping the body fight off cancer and viruses like COVID-19, a new study reveals. A team from the University of Florida found that meditation and yoga programs, or Inner Engineering practices, dramatically boost the body’s immune system.

Relaxing parasympathetic nervous system suppresses cortisol I believe. To much Stress hormones can definitely inhibit immune response. Also humming( tongue on roof of mouth( increases nitric oxide in blood according to some studies). I thought it was interesting for sport performance. But I’m sure more oxygen can’t hurt either. Ill fall short of saying this stops covid though professionally speaking haha.

It’s a traditional Ayurvedic practice. Haven’t heard of it being used for covid but it’s part of a medical tradition that goes back thousands of years. I’ve never had the guts to try it, grosses me out to much.

I did know one person, some years ago, who made a practice of it for a while. She would collect a small shot of her first pee of the day, mid stream, and drink it. She said when she was in balance it tasted almost buttery. That grossed me out more

Quit the guilt trips on someone’s else’s choice. Stop and remember we all have the freedom of choice because we live in the United States. don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s not “conservative” to support private businesses requiring the Covid shot. I know libertarians & neocons like to shill for the private sector and say stuff like, “It’s a private company, it can do whatever it wants, no government interference. If you don’t like it, go find a new job, shop at a different store,” etc. etc.

At what point do you recognize this is Jim Crow-esque discrimination? Creating a secondary class of citizens? That it’s unjust to force parents working paycheck to paycheck to forego an income because they don’t want to be a part of a global experiment? That when every avenue in private & public life is closed off to making an income and living a normal life, you end up radicalizing people and creating a dissident class that no longer believes in the legitimacy of the government or the right of the ruling class to its power?

When the storm arrives, you will be blamed. Don’t expect mercy.

That’s why, as a white girl, I wasn’t going to get the shot until all the underserved community members got theirs. But then two days after some court said my company could fire me for not getting vaxed, my company offered to fire all the unvaccinated workers, because fuck you, that’s why. Good luck finding work somewhere else, plague rat. So even though it hurts my conscience to take from the historically marginalized I still had to get vaccinated. One of those deaths is my responsibility because I was so selfish.

Man, you are deluded if you think we have the world’s best healthcare or that immigrants get a free ride. Of the top 10 countries in the world, the US is 11th (yes I intended that to be humor, though sad humor).

We also spend twice as much per capita as any of the top 10 to get worse care.

Healthcare in this country is seriously broken. The pandemic simply shines a much brighter light on the problem.

Unique ip addresses or accounts aren’t confirmation imo due to current work arounds, but it’s your site so you set the standard whatever that may be. Its unfortunate to me that the site is being platformed and targeted for spreading misinformation and extreme views because I doubt thats the spirit of the local news site you’d like to portray. I’m sure you do your best to moderate, but it’s harder to clean up something than for someone to finger paint on the walls in the first place. Gee only one of the most credible people Dr Robert Malone, coniventer of mrna tech in 1989, been in every pandemic since aids, has worked with fauci for many years, he is questioning mandates, questions masks effectiveness, question the vaccine and it’s effectiveness especially for kids and middle aged adults. He believes the vaccine after 3 dose might be causing negative efficacy( you get covid easier than with no shot!) Because of t-cell repression. I mean how do you not question the vaccine when a 60 year old guy who is about to retire has no financial incentive question the vaccine. He is not doing this for attention. Baning people on Twitter, firing prestigious doctors who are in the top of their class( Robert has several constituents who have been fired for questionING the vaccine). All this and more, like watching all my tripled jabbed friends getting sick. Please if your jabbed its not your fault you didn’t know better.

Malone was banned on Twitter for multiple statements that were demonstrably false. He’s pissed because he feels like he wasn’t given enough credit for his study which was done when he was a grad student for a degree he never finished.

At least Rogan shows a deeper understanding of the nature of man. He makes no claim on being the final word on what the truth is. We all know we make mistakes.

True wisdom is not trying to convince anyother person of the correct path, it’s knowing that patience and understanding of the true nature of man requires much deeper thought and humility than is shown by those who claim to have any real knowing here.

The only truth is the inner peace that comes from the releasing our expectations of needing to be right.

So is the answer just more of these less effective vaccines more frequently?

Did they ever finish that clinical trial data on the 3 shot regimen of any of the mrna injections? Or did they just can the trials fast as the could? Do we not worry about clinical safety trials anymore?

About the same time Omicron will disappear. And before anyone can get another booster, anyway.

Why did a Delta booster never materialize?

“African people’s history” does not show a series of European or even non Sub Saharan people. Wouldn’t that mean the algorithm used by search engines reflects bias ofpopular searches? Or deliberate editing of it? Or one leading to the other? There must be a reason that there are different races in Africa is true to but there is zero notice taken of it on that search. Your response in the linked comment is deficient and doesn’t explain why at all.

The grilling was the other way around by the way, the lil Italian who thinks he is a genius is just another small minded bureaucrat with a big title who derives power from his position because he has no other means to gain power in his life. Very typical of many bureaucrats. The lil Italian is in a league with that other schmuck Italian Mario the sexual harasser. If you are a student of history, you judge after enough time has passed to give people a better look at how our perspective is lacking so much more information that will continue to come out as more people begin to see they’ve been lied to, consistently, and stop giving strangers in the government respect they don’t deserve.

Our only job is to be the best we can be, aside from any outside coercion.

Really? If he truly thought they were dangerous, why did he get both shots of the Moderns vaccine? After he said they were dangerous. N And he said ” it’s “nucking futs” for people who have had COVID-19 to get vaccinated. Which is also what he did. “Malone has also suggested that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines might actually be making the coronavirus more dangerous” and guess what? That was wrong too as witness omicron.

What seems to be really going on is that he’s a vindictive SOB who felt slighted when the press called others the inventors of mRNA vaccines even when they gave him credit for his prior work, got all pissy and called himself the inventor, “admitted to Logically in July that he did not invent the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines of today, and instead claimed credit for creating the “vaccine technology platform.” But later on anti vaxxer sites, returned to calling himself the inventor. The man’s a hot mess. He worked at the Salk institute until he got booted out over personality conflicts without even completing his degree. Then he got left off the patents and thereafter complained to anyone who would listen ““They got rich on the products of my mind.”

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02483-w is a really precise and thorough history of mRNA vaccines.

https://www.politifact.com/article/2022/jan/06/who-robert-malone-joe-rogans-guest-was-vaccine-sci/

But he says- sort of- what anti vaxxers want to hear and they trot him out as their show pony at every opportunity. After all, inept and inaccurate with a vindictive nature, he’s still the best they got.

He has warned against negative efficacy after a number of doses, and suggested that the unknown risks aren’t worth the benefit to children and younger adults.

He’s fairly elderly, and has never said that the vaccines are dangerous.

I do agree that he strikes me as bitter and very much seems to be enjoying the attention. Although the same could be said about fauci. Should we disregard his opinions for the same reasons?

Sigh. As if anything was that simple. If a scientist’s job was to figure out how to treat a potential virus that was manipulated by a foreign government to be used as a bioweapon, he would need to know what changes could be done in order to know how to deal with them. So he would need to have some mutated virus in order to learn how it can be stopped. So he makes a “gain of function” virus to use in testing how to stop it. Would that be “gain of function” research or the needs of national security? Would it be stupid to assume other countries are not doing so and be caught unable to respond because there was no tolerance for the work?

Such research is a dilemma. There is always a risk of accidental release and damage, even with the best efforts to ensure such creations are benign. Then there is the sharing or even encouraging of research that might allow a not so benign country to make use of it. One thing for sure is that the PRC has neither the openness or the integrity to be a good partner. There are too many non native researchers using US funding for there to be any integrity that any research will remain in US hands. And even if US citizens are the ones doing it, it does not guarantee security as there are plenty of cases of them being bought by foreign governments.

So such research can’t be stopped in a foreign country and should the US refuse to be aware of it? It is a serious dilemma that Rand Paul should know better than to use in public hearings. No matter if Fauci erred on the side funding research out the US’s control or not, making it personal is pretty pathetic and damagung. If he thinks Fauci went too far, it’s not like it would have stopped it from happened anyway. But then the US might have been unaware of it. The answer is not easy and Rand Paul should know better.

Rand Paul does “Know Better”. You make a lot of assumptions and tell a wild story to justify why Fauci lied to congress. You suggest COVID started somewhere else besides Wuhan, which is the funniest thing you could say.

Here’s two undebatable facts for you. From Fauci’s own emails.

  1. Fauci conspired with Dr. Francis Collins to publicly smear 3 epidemiologists from Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford who disagreed with their approach. Fauci’s response: “He sent that to me”, yet Fauci replied via email with his agreement.
  2. Fauci and Collins were in conversation in April 2020, conspiring to make the theories that COVID started in Wuhan Lab go away, prior to any investigation to the origination they were trying to cover it up, Fauci told him “Not to do anything now, it is a shiny object that will go away”.

But I kinda liked your fictional narrative of “Assume this, so that one would need that, in order to assume this, assume that, and so on.”

Just do a search of “What’s Rand Paul’s problem.” And it is not assuming anything- it is what research scientists do. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-scientists-tweak-lab-viruses-to-make-them-more-contagious1/

Well said Rent a Wreck. This guy thinks he can search opinion pages smearing an actual Doctor who is now a Senator, and explain to us what Scientists do.

Meanwhile his hero Fauci is conspiring to smear REAL RESEARCH SCIENTISTS because he doesn’t like their conclusions.

Since when is a government doctor supposed to get involved with covering up the origin and smearing alternative solutions proposed by the best Epidemiologists in the country?

Fauci could be leading the best COVID response for this country, but he can’t and won’t earn the public’s trust because he’s lying to congress and conspiring against anyone who questions him. He needs to resign if he wants this Pandemic to get under control. Maybe Americans will trust the next guy to fill his shoes.
