[UPDATE 10:08 p.m.] Coast Guard Searching for Missing 21-Year-Old in Trinidad Bay

Hunter Lewis

Hunter Lewis

A 21-year-old, Hunter Lewis, disappeared yesterday while canoeing in Trinidad Bay. The Coast Guard has been searching for him. They began searching last night around 7 p.m., according to a Coast Guard spokesperson.

The spokesperson also told us that the State Parks were looking and the Coast Guard not only had their Barracuda searching but also had had other equipment in the water and in the air. He said that so far 620 square Nautical miles had been searched–including 12 miles west of Trinidad and south towards McKinleyville.

“We don’t know if he was sticking in the Bay or going around the Head,” Ross Taylor, family friend told us. “The Coast Guard has been on it all night…They are on it with several inflatables and a helicopter.”

One of the searchers helping the family, Jae Wood, tells us that Lewis was “setting up a treasure hunt for friends.”

Hunter Lewis map

A copy of the treasure map, Hunter Lewis was going to share.

She tells us that Lewis was last seen about 10 a.m. yesterday wearing a wet suit in a greenish canoe at the Bay.

“We are asking everyone who was in Trinidad yesterday to provide any information as to if you saw a young man in a wet suit go out with a canoe, a canoe (greenish) on the water,” she wrote in a social media post. She also asked if folks were in the area but didn’t see him to also let them know by responding to the social media post.

She asked for people to “post any photos you may have of Trinidad yesterday” and say the time the photo was posted.

“Family is asking for help searching the beaches and the water,” she wrote. “Air support is done for now… drones are now allowed.”

Family friend, Ross Taylor told us, “Some people are meeting at the Seascape parking lot.” However, he said, almost everyone was out searching including Hunter Lewis’ father.

Taylor told us, “As far as we know he was wearing a wet suit, but we have no idea if he was wearing any other inflatables….We don’t know where he was going because it was all secret.”

Taylor asked for anyone who was there yesterday to describe what they saw by responding to the social media post.

UPDATE 10:14 a.m.: Below is a social media post by Hunter’s father asking for assistance.

Corey Lewis, father of the missing youth, is looking for help.

UPDATE 10:57 a.m.: Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:

Hunter Lewis

Hunter Lewis

A search and rescue for a 21-year-old Blue Lake man is currently underway in the Trinidad area.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Hunter Nathaniel Lewis who failed to return home from recreating in Trinidad yesterday afternoon. Lewis is believed to have possibly entered the ocean in his canoe near the Trinidad Harbor sometime between 10 a.m. and noon, December 30.

A search of Trinidad Head and the surrounding water was conducted during the night, with negative results. Search efforts continue today.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Special Services deputies, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse, the United States Coast Guard and California State Parks are currently searching the surrounding beaches and ocean for any sign of Lewis. Search crews are utilizing a Coast Guard helicopter, the Coast Guard Cutter and small boats, in addition to searching on foot.

Hunter Lewis is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, 135 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He is believed to be wearing a dark-colored wet suit.

Lewis’ canoe is described as a 15-foot fiberglass canoe with a green exterior.

Anyone who saw Lewis in the Trinidad area yesterday or has any information regarding his current whereabouts is urged to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251.

UPDATE 2:05 p.m.: The search continues, says Jae Wood who is helping the family look for Hunter Lewis. She sent us this photo of a Coast Guard helicopter searching.

She explained that for a short time searchers thought there was a sighting of Hunter Lewis’ canoe at the mouth of the Mad River, “but it was not it,” she said. “State Parks, HCSO, Coast Guard, family friends and community members are still searching the beaches for any clues.”

UPDATE 6:39 p.m.:  Latest information:

UPDATE 10:07: Press release from the US Coast Guard,

After an extensive search and carefully considering all the factors, the Coast Guard has suspended active search efforts for a 21-year old male missing in the vicinity of Trinidad Head, CA.
Aircraft, boats, cutters, and shoreside personnel from USCG Sector Humboldt Bay, Air Station Sacramento, Station Humboldt Bay, USCG Cutter BARRACUDA, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and California State Parks Lifeguards conducted extensive search efforts after the individual was reported missing Thursday evening, totaling more than 20 search patterns and over 1,000 square nautical miles of search efforts. The individual was believed to be in a green canoe in or near Trinidad Harbor around 1030 on Thursday morning, but no sign of the man or his canoe or equipment has been found.
Coast Guard personnel and partner agencies thoroughly evaluated winds, tides, currents, water temperature, and search conditions prior to making the difficult decision to suspend the search.
“It’s always difficult to suspend a search when you don’t have any answers as to what happened. In this case, with no further information to go on and given the conditions, we’ve exhausted our reasonable search options. We can only hope that additional information is found in the future that helps reveal what happened to this young man. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Lewis’s family and loved ones, and our thanks to the numerous partner agencies and volunteers that participated in the search effort.” – CAPT Mark Hiigel, Sector Humboldt Bay Commander

Thanks Kym, this is actually the first time you did not use your mad black belt skills and delete my question/comment. I feel like a new man! Now let’s pray with the power of Jesus (or whatever higher power you choose) for this mans safe return. I have already blessed this part of the ocean with some healing spells and have called upon my healing minister to do the same. May peace be with this family and young man.

The answer to your question is no, you are not a man of God looking for a family member or you wouldn’t have to ask if he was looking for treasure, a question all his family members already know. She’s cleaned this comment section up so much from 6 months ago and when she deletes and edits my comments I respect it. Not everything I say deserves/should be published on her platform and I respect that. Maybe you should respect that this is her platform and even a “man of god” isn’t superior to her or the good of the community.

I pray that the Coast Guard, State Park Rangers, or someone else will locate Hunter. Hopefully his greenish canoe will be fairly easy to spot, and I would think it will be along the shoreline. Hunter could be on the rocks, cold but safe.

Yes, that’s true.

A very high tide running to a very low tide during the time he may have launched.

I’m not sure how that would have affected the prevailing currents in the harbor, but I could see how it may have created a struggle to return to shore for a few hours after he launched.

Hopefully he made it to shore in a safe location and he will be located soon. The high tide was 8 feet today around 8:30 AM.

Why didnt your god help this young man??Why didnt your prayers work??

James, I’m not sure what the lord and savior told you, but unless you hear it directly from someone running the incident, do not fly drones in the search area. The Coast Guard has multiple aircraft working at low altitudes. The Sheriff’s Office has a drone that they will deploy if they decide that they can be safe and effective in doing so.

Do not tempt to kayak in Trinidad alone without a life jacket a proper wet suit an most importantly unless you are an excellent swimmer and I mean excellent.

Emerald

People kayaking in the ocean alone have either a death wish, no fear of danger, or absolutely do not fully understand the dangers of being alone in the ocean in a kayak exposed to any elements that come your way. It’s rather exhilarating the first time around Trinidad alone an beyond.

Prayer helps those in distress stay calm. It’s a meditation of sorts. So do so if that makes you feel better. It is also good for those who are in so much distress they cannot do so. To be prayed for is an act of compassion. Acts of compassion can save someone. Knowing someone cares about your well being can be a game changer in difficult times of coping. With or without religious beliefs: Everyone needs that. Right now the family of this missing young man needs acts of compassion.
Me deepest sympathy to them during this arduous and difficult time.

If anyone wants to help , take a trip to the coast bring binoculars and look from Petrolia up to big lagoon
Sad to say but at this point you may be looking for a body although I hope he is found alive. Don’t get yourself in any trouble and stay back from the water , if you see anything call 911. I went on many search and rescues during my time as a volunteer firefighter. Sadly lost an old sparring partner Jeremy on one call. I get very disappointed with people who live nearby and could go look but choose to offer thoughts and prayers instead. It’s real easy to do that but a lot harder to go out in the cold and look. Not sure if its people in general or just a Humboldt thing but it sure gets me down seeing how selfish and fake the world has become.

Aaaa1 yes they can travel quite a ways in my experience. Seems to be about a 50 50 chance of the body showing up. I feel it at least gives the family some closure if a body is found. It takes a little effort to do but most people can do it if they really want to and like I said before thoughts and prayers have never ever helped in all my time as a first responder. My words to all people are Volunteer for your local fire dept, no excuses, you don’t have to be big and strong just willing to help your community and answer the call no matter the time.

I apologize I forgot your name, but we talked on Indian Beach yesterday about you seeing Hunter around 2-3 pm in his canoe along the shoreline. We would like to discuss this sighting with you again today. Please come down to the Trinidad state beach parking lot by the bathrooms. We had a base camp setup there yesterday. You have the 2 dogs, one French bull dog and 1 American pit, that are both grayish in color. You’re a local Trinidad fisherman and we trust your sighting as credible since you spend so much time on the water. I / We really look forward to hearing from you today. This fisherman lives in Trinidad, is about 5 10″ tall with reddish hair and a beard. He’s probably in his late 30’s or early 40’s. We just want to discuss this sighting with you one more time. If anyone knows who this person may be please reach out to us. I will try to track him down today. Thank you! 😇🙏❤

However, with that said, I feel there is no better opportunity to point out some safety measures, by no means at your sons expense, but for the safety of others who may venture after him. I would prefer to say this later, perhaps on a follow up article bearing good news, but so often there is never a follow up article, good or bad, at no fault of the well intentioned, overly worked journalists.

Years back, I could have been in your sons situation. The ocean had been calmer than a sleeping dog’s water bowl for over a week. I loaded my 17 foot canoe and drove to the very same beach as your son. But I waited a day too long. There was a slight wind picking up and a swell coming with it. The outgoing tide was beginning to expose rocks in the shallows. I only planned to go out and around the big rock a few pier lengths out and come back. I noted the many moored fishing boats should I need help. I was a good swimmer. It was summer. I’ve been in rough conditions on the bay, lagoons and rivers. Then I looked again at the small swells beginning to break over the rocks. The boats were now rocking a bit more. Honestly, I think I was more afraid of being in the news and the emptiness felt by my family than what might actually happen to me. It was at that point I remembered an old adage, if you can’t see land on the other side of the water, don’t go out in an open boat. A canoe is an open boat. They swamp easily. Once that happens, unlike a kayak, they cannot be baked out. The ocean acts much differently than a lake, lagoon, bay, river, slough, etc.

Sun Yi Father and searcher, Family, Friends and loved ones, please understand, I mean no disrespect. Again, I am sorry for your stress and worries right now. But, in times like this, I cannot bite my tongue. To those who think they are better than Hunter or more daring than me, please, think twice, and then once more for your loved ones. At the very least, take someone with you.

I will be keeping an eye out along the Eureka beaches.
