Press release from the City of Rio Dell:

On Thursday, December 9, 2021, Mayor Debra Garnes officially opened the City’s new “Rio Dell Big Battery” energy storage facility built by Tesla. The facility was made possible through the California Public Utility Commission’s (CPUC) Equity Resilience Self‐Generation Incentive Program. The CPUC created the program as a result of the 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoffs. The project has been delivered at no cost to the City.

Located at the City’s Corporation Yard, the battery system can power both water and wastewater treatment systems for up to 20 hours of operation independent from the electricity grid. The system also stores electricity during low pricing periods and offsets energy consumption during high price periods, thereby helping to reduce energy costs.

“We appreciate the opportunity to work with Tesla on this project.” Stated Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp. “The new capabilities of this system will enable us to better serve the community during potential future blackouts or other energy disrupting events.”

We will never own an electric car. From their being built, the pollution they produce, the filthy rare earth mining operations, the support of the Chinese Communists, slave labor and forced reeducation camps. Fossil fuels will continue to be in use for another 100 + years, and they are so clean. Electric cars suck, and the are ugly

I look forward to tractor-pull type competitions between electric and internal combustion cars. Electric will punch above its weight because of that bottomless torque curve.

I agree, renewables, not dirty extraction, but clean fossil fuels? Go suck a tailpipe & you’ll change your mind

the electric car pollutes more than a comparable size fossil car for the first 100,000 miles, and is not nearly as recycle able. The fossil fuel car is almost 90%. The batteries in electric cars are very toxic, and cannot be reused. Maybe you can put them in with the spent nuclear waste. And telling someone to suck on a pipe is not in the flavor of this site. There are almost 300 million cars in the US. We produce in the US, millions of fossil cars a year. As does VW, As does Ford, and many others. The only people who think electric grid draining batter cars are the future, are far and few between.

It is true that we should not allow for the import of any items contaning rare earth minerals mined by china. They are not communist, they are state capitalists. Of course we also should not use fossil fules as the extraction of these materials is just as bad.

They call themselves the Chinese Communist Party, yes, they are communists, ask one of their political prisoners, or a gay person, or Christian, or a Muslim. The extraction of fossil fuels here in the US, is much cleaner than rare earth minerals, and is already in place. $2.00 a gallon with Trump, $5 a gallon under the fascist Biden. The spread of covid? Ask the border patrol, thousands coming here infected, and spread it everywhere, Biden to blame for that. Remember when Biden and Harris said they would not take the vaccine because they did not trust Trump? Now they mandate it? Democrats really can fuck things up.

Which station in Humboldt did you see the pumps at $2/gal?

Electric vehicles cost more than gas powered, based on recent study. This is most apparent on long trips where commercial charging can be quite expensive, and hard to find. In rural Humboldt the Tesla just doesn’t make sense. These Tesla batteries in rio dell are only effective if the power outages last 20 hours or less, otherwise they will have to fire up the gas powered generator.

https://amp.freep.com/amp/6110815001

“The study has four major findings:

There are four additional costs to powering EVs beyond electricity: cost of a home charger, commercial charging, the EV tax and “deadhead” miles.

For now, EVs cost more to power than gasoline costs to fuel an internal combustion car that gets reasonable gas mileage.

Charging costs vary more widely than gasoline prices.

There are significant time costs to finding reliable public chargers — even then a charger could take 30 minutes to go from 20% to an 80% charge.”

Nicolai was da man! But Edison’s DC power might get the last laugh in the era of solar, wind, and electric cars because the systems for storing it are so much simpler and cheaper. And DC technology has finally progressed to the point that voltage-stepping with it can be reasonably efficient. Kind of ironic that the company named after the most significant figure in AC technology is mainly concerned with applications of DC technology.

Yeah, I’ve laughed at the name since Tessa’s creation. Even the EV truck Nicola, if it ever produces anything, is misnamed. But, I guess the name Edison has long since been taken, and compared to that sleazeball, Nicola Tesla was so muck cooler, despite his eccentricities.

After a very quick bit of research: the Tesla Model S uses an alternating current (AC) induction motor. The AC induction motor was invented by Nicola Tesla. However, the Tesla Model 3 uses permanent-magnet direct current (DC) motor.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/electric-cars-explained-gearheads/
“Today, all the hybrids are powered by DC brushless drives, with no exceptions. The only notable uses of induction drives have been the General Motors EV-1; the AC Propulsion vehicles, including the tzero; and the Tesla Roadster. Both DC brushless and induction drives use motors having similar stators.”
https://www.tesla.com/blog/induction-versus-dc-brushless-motors

At first glance, this looks like it might be interesting for those gear heads who want to stay up to date. It looks a bit heady, so, I’m gonna need to take my time reading it.
https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/58236/why-does-a-tesla-car-use-an-ac-motor-instead-of-a-dc-one

All this said, at the right places and times, not city streets mind you, I do still love the sound of a properly tuned, high performance internal combustion engine (ICE). Interestingly enough, if you look at what the big American car makers and a few super rare foreign car makers (Bugatti, Hennessey, SSC) are producing right now, we are currently going through a new golden age of ICEs.

Tell Tesla that it rains up here.
The thing would last a lot longer if it were better protected from the elements.
Count the days until the rust is streaming down the sides.
