‘Called the N Word’: An HSU Student Shaken After Encounter in Eureka

Hate speechYesterday evening about 4:15 p.m., a frightening encounter, allegedly involving a racist slur, with three men and a pit bull has 22-year-old, Humboldt State University student, Nick C. changing his mind about staying in the County and working in an environmentally focused field.

Nick, who didn’t want his full name used for fear that the men he encountered and reported to police might track him down, went for a bicycle ride along the
Hikshari’ Trail just before sunset like he has frequently done for the last several months since he moved to Eureka from Arcata.

The red marker shows the area identified by Nick C. as the place he was verbally assaulted.

The red marker shows the area identified by Nick C. as the place he was verbally assaulted.

When he reached the area behind Planet Fitness, he passed two men with bikes accompanied by a brown pitbull. “One had long grey hair down to his waist,” Nick remembered. “One called me the N word…At first, I didn’t really grasp what he said.”

Nick, who is not black said this was his “first real experience of racism even though he’s from “a really mixed heritage–white Mexican, Pilipino, and Paiute. But I’m really dark brown.”

In any case, Nick kept going but turned his head. “I yelled, ‘Fuck you’ back at him.” At that moment out of the bushes, he said,  “[a] third guy comes screaming “CHARGE” out of the bushes (water side) and comes barrelling at me.” He added, “This guy yelled charge like it was a Civil War battle.”

He managed to ride quickly far enough away that the three men and the dog walked off together. But Nick was so shocked by the encounter that he believes that the whole incident could have been a trap. “Whether it was to hurt me or rob me,” he explained. “The bait in this trap was the N word.” He believes that if he had stopped to confront the man yelling the slur he would have been attacked.

Nick continued up the trail and in what he felt was a safe place called law enforcement and reported the incident. “I felt like they lived out there,” he said. “All were…older white guys who looked homeless and maybe in their 40/50s and one was bald.”

He added later, “It took me like a few hours to get my heart to stop beating [so hard].”

Eventually, he reached out and described his experiences on the Humboldt County subReddit. As of early Friday morning, over 60 comments were posted in reply–all supportive except one commenter that added racially charged comments before being removed by a moderator. Several commenters mention being afraid while trying to enjoy trails in the area.

One woman said, “[T]here’s a meth head at the Hammond trail and I took my two younger siblings to go walking and he kept shouting N-er and taunting us.

“I made the Reddit post as a warning,” Nick C. told us. “[Being attacked in the woods] was always a random thought before just because I’m brown but now I’m like ‘hey, its real.'”

Nick noted that the Humboldt Subreddit made him feel better, “That was the silver lining–so many people were there so fast to be supportive.

But, he reiterated, “I had hoped to stay. I really like the nature up here. I would like some preservation job [or] Desk job with BLM. Keep Humboldt green.”

But now he says he doesn’t want to live in Humboldt County any more, “I wanted to stay and work here. I really like the nature up here. But now, I am ready to take that passion to a part of California that is a little more welcoming.”

After yesterday, he says he is able to be more empathetic to what his girlfriend goes through. “I helped my girlfriend buy pepper spray a while ago,” he explained. “And now I’m going to buy pepper spray and have my knife when I go on trails…”

He added, “There’s a risk now and I see it.”

He pointed out, “[Being called a racial slur] definitely leaves a mark. Even if it was just a sick twisted joke. It leaves like a mark that says I might not be safe here anymore.”

I’ve had problems with aggressive crazy people in the same spot as Nick…but also on the Hammond trail and Arcata’s bayfront trail. It seems to be getting worse, and the problem definitely keeps alot of people from enjoying these areas.

I didn’t necessarily find the Smollette comment humorous.

I do appreciate the humor. Especially a quick wit.

There is nothing wrong with it.

In this case it illustrates that this guy could be fabricating his story as well…

It’s possible, however probable it is or isn’t, it should be kept in mind, even though I don’t doubt it.

I did think the Dr. Pepper comment was totally humorous.

That one was pretty quick, too.

Thanks.

🤔🧐I look forward to more.😁

I heard Juicy did a couple trial runs. Casting the actors. That’s according to his bothers testimony. I think he may be going to jail. They need to be looking at Kamala to see what role she played.

What interesting is they (Kamala) used Jucicy’s false flag to pass a “anti-lynching” laws.
They already had two patsies (white of course) in custody. The media and the politicians were going to put it on blast. And the two innocent men were going to be ruined for life…

This is how a real modern day lynching works people.

Juicy’s Lawyer broke down and started crying in court today. Said the judge lunged at her. Hahahahahah.
And making snarky faces which we know is akin to actual violence!
Probably from the racizm…. or global warming
You can’t make this stuff up.

Defendant breaks down crying in court? Okay, plausible.
Witness breaks down crying in court? Okay, sometimes plausible.
LAWYER breaks down crying in court? Lol bullsh!t.

Totally fake. This woman has 20 something years experience as a trial lawyer, and worked with Johnny Cochran. Yes, that one. She has seen hostile judges and been in courtrooms with murderers, her crying was fake and she is attempting to force action from the judge so she can cry racism.
Professional victims.

Regardless of how they identify, they’re predators and vermin of the lowest order and need to be dealt with… with much malice and prejudice. The cops and our politicians aren’t going to solve the problem. We the people, should. These drugged out cretins have overtaken our town. Steal with impunity, harass and intimidate those of us that pay the taxes that politicians and vermin slurp up.

I’m with you on this one Jim’s wife. Read San Francisco Chronicle new article ‘she moved to SF to save her daughter from fentanyl. She had no idea what she was up against’ It’s a creepy first hand account of life in the tenderloin’s open air drug market. It’s what will happen here if we keep encouraging these low life dirtbags to make a life here. They stay in SF because life is easy; all the food and drugs they could want, steal from Target and resell for some pocket money; no consequences.
Its happening here also. We shouldn’t sit back and watch it happen.

I don’t know about you, but I think the ROI on the tax dollars I pay is abysmal. I expect much better service and results than what I’m seeing now.

There were people living under bridges in ancient Rome, long before corporations existed. Even those who had shelter lived in abysmal housing. There was plenty of homelessness in communist countries. It is unlikely that there is that much corporate influence in Humboldt County at all. So how do you think that it the big problem?

I think the US and State tax codes are the bigger problem than corporations who lobby for favorable rules and squeeze every deduction until it screams. So stop voting for people who run for office promising the good they will do with more tax dollars. Because they are the ones who can’t resist the smarter, more adept people who became rich and keep getting richer by avoiding paying much tax as they can. Vote for the innate skinflint who is offended by spending any more money than absolutely necessary for anything as they are the people not likely to be moved by money thrown at them by the rich.

That did raise a tiny flag for me. The Bureau of Land Management isn’t known for it’s environmental concerns, though much better now, since they get all the excess federal lands (like outstanding natural areas.) It was known, a few decades ago as a captured agency (captured by industry).

There certainly are desk jobs at the BLM, but if you want to help protect the environment, working at a desk for the BLM seems an odd choice. Or maybe not, who knows.

I was a BLM ranger/historian for a bit. Part of why I quit was the big wigs had no idea of how to protect an natural area. Their instinct was to develop it, even though it was already “An Outstanding Natural Area” by designation.

Sounds like an attempted robbery, not so much a racist incident. California needs to get tough on crime. I think we should build a giant open air tent prison in the San Joaquin Valley. Anyone convicted of shoplifting or drug possession should spend a full year picking fruits, vegetables, and cotton. Breaking and entering, or attempted robbery should be multiple years of hard labor.

Full disclosure there are a lot of people in Humboldt County that still use racist slurs. If you are black don’t go to Alderpoint or out highway 36, much worse things can happen.

This sounds incredibly scary. It can be hard to know how to react sometimes when you’re confronted in the way Nick was, it will really get your adrenaline up and make it hard to think straight. It sounds like his flight or flight kicked in and he flew, which was the smart choice. I agree that given the circumstances these men were probably out to rob him, or possibly high and violent.

Some of the comments on this post are very ignorant. I see this happening a lot with people who have encountered racism or racist behavior. They’re asked to carry the burden of proof that what happened to them was real, or that it actually constitutes racism, but no amount of proof is enough for their critics.

I don’t think the majority of people in our county are represented by Nick’s attackers or by the commenters on this post who are, again, saying very ignorant things, but I can’t blame him for feeling unsafe after what happened. I hope that more of us can agree that we have work to do on making our community safe.

But the issue is why he felt unsafe. And what his reaction was going to effect. Most of the people you feel don’t get it did not believe race was the problem as much as aggressive behavior. IE if these people had confronted a woman, they would have called called her a bitch or something similar. If it was a small white male, they may have called them some anti-gay slur or geek or loser or whatever they thought made them more powerful than the person they assaulted. If someone had a handicap, they would call them a crip or retard. The point being maybe racism supplies the lexicon but it does not necessarily supply the motive. And thinking that it is just ignorant racists is not identifying the problem any more than blaming rain on the color of the sky. It actually empowers the bullies of the world to affirm their delusions and seeks to fix that problem in ways that can’t possibly work.

I fear we are making the word “nigger” more powerful by fearing to ever invoke it in serious discussions. It’s like Voldemort or something. Let’s be clear that this term is predominantly something ignorant people use out of hate, or with malice, but it is the intention that harms not the word.

No more magic/curse words.

Context. I don’t generally listen to that style music, so I don’t know for sure. But, I would say that if they are using the word referring to someone they don’t know, then it’s not a good thing and you are correct. But if they know the person, I’d compare it to me greeting a good friend with “Fv(%er”. If you say it to me, the gloves come off. My buddy says it to me, it’s an indication of how close of friends we are.

That’s very unfortunate. I had a pretty rough encounter between the mall and trailhead at Herrick. I never take the trail near the mall anymore.
Self defense classes are pretty important, living on the west coast I discovered.
Get your CCL. Take gun safety and training classes.

Nick, be careful what type of knife you decide to keep on you. California changed its knife laws a few years ago. Anything with a fixed blade over 3 1/2 inches carried hidden on your person is now considered a felony. That includes a folding knife with a blade locking mechanism. Its not always charged but it is always a possibility. A good can of pepper spray works very well against both people and animals. I’m sorry you had this experience here in Eureka. I thought we were a better city than that. Apparently not.

Nick, you can wear a knife in a sheath suspended from your waist and that is not considered concealed. California Knife Laws https://www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/california/ Be aware that any knife of size etc is considered concealed if it is not in plain view inside your vehicle as well. Also, consider sharpening any knife you do buy. Most come unsharpened. A good hunting knife can be sharpened to a razor’s edge.

Another safety tactic is to use your cell phone within view at some distance to call a friend when in doubt and describe the people confronting you. When they see a cell phone they often go away. Might not work as well for drunks but will work for any sneaky bastards.

Sorry you or anyone else has to deal with this. You could always get a concealed carry for a gun if working for BLM. I would hope many field workers in the BLM, especially women and POC have them.

As a white male i am often called the nword in public, i sorta just laugh about it and see the humor in it all. Its just a word, it cannot hurt people. As for the homeless people. yes this is a tough community, you have to carry a gun and be ready to fight if you want to use public spaces, if your too weak to deal with the low lifes up here, then this is not the place for you.

Welcome to Humboldt County, Nick. These are sad but true realities up here on occasion. My favorite tale of ignorance was having a family member called an Asian slur after they didn’t immediately seat some people at an Asian restaurant. The family member was waiting in the lobby for their takeout order. They didn’t work at the restaurant and are of Native American heritage. 🤦

Snowflakes? Toughen up? Just try for a nano-second to put yourselves in someone else’s shoes… Most of us understand that there are certain words that are symbolic of a mindset, a history, and a culture of violence. The n word is one such word.

It isn’t just a disparaging word, it is a word that calls up the Jim Crow south, lynchings and 5 centuries of violence against black and brown people here. When it is used against you, it tells you that the person you are dealing with hates you for something you have no control over, that they don’t see you as fully human, and that they may intend to hurt you in particularly vicious ways because somehow your very existence threatens them.

It breaks my heart to hear Nick’s story, and to see some people blame him for “not knowing better” than to ride his bike on a public trail.

Are our trails just for burly white men who can stand up to aggressors? Of course, as a woman, I don’t have nearly the freedoms that most men have in terms of walking around safely either. Let’s try to be compassionate and see things from other people’s point of view, and support and listen to each other and try to nudge our community towards a more open hearted, compassionate way.

Its ok, we can just be nicer to each other, the world won’t end…

It is curious that a word wildly popular with post-american youth and promoted almost exclusively by brown skinned people themselves is seen as a horrible offense when used as a insult by non BLM types.
Not surprisingly, the word is coming back into regular use by many who have realized that contrition for wrongs of the past have gained them no favor with descendants of the enslaved.
If nothing is gained through politeness, then nothing is lost through intolerance.

Hi all

thanks for the support in this forum though it’s a lot less than the Reddit, maybe change in age demographics and the racial attitudes here lol…

to all the keyboard warriors saying I’m a baby or snowflake for running away from two men and their pit who threatened me (not even seeing the third who ran out of the bushes to come and tackle me) ur all either a liar who woulda ran too (to not die) or stupid who would have swung at the first two and immediately gotten rushed from the hidden crazy besekser bum from behind and jumped by 3 guys and a pit then dumped into the bushes on the trail, being added onto the long ass missing persons list here

oh wait you’re all probably mostly white and would never have to experience this sort of life threatening experience in the first place and enjoy town not feeling like a target

you’re all tough guys who just say what you would do on the internet and rag on others to feel better

and you probably drink shit beer and have big gut

again thanks to all those offering support and advice, y’all make the county cool and what is, not these dumbies who probably would have a better getting along with the racist bums who charged me

definitely seen annoying racist stuff in my life before living around Sac and San Francisco but never felt in danger for my life like where cause I’m brown or seen so many people flock to defend racists like here and the causal racism

pretty toxic here so this’ll be my one post as there’s no point in arguing with a wannabe klansman

if it’s not already linked the original Reddit post is here:

Where I’ll be more active if that interests anyone.

thanks again,

Yep. There’s a totally indicative example of an HSU education.

Although, I’m sorry our homeless harassed you here in Humboldt.

Good luck wherever you go, although if you’re staying in California, I think your fear of homeless people will be perpetual.

In the meantime… anyone wanna watch “The Purge” with me so we can rid ourselves of vermin in Humboldt County and ensure run on sentences, grammatical errors and syntax will continue to be taught unabated at HSU?

The least we can do is rid this area of dirtbags so-out-of-towners are safe in our space… and our children, too.

Nick, Kym is a leftist herself but is a little obsessive over free speech.. So.. this blog is where some rejected hate trolls have come because they’ve been kicked out of other places online. This is NOT a random sample of Humboldt. Some of them look like they’d be a physical liability in real life, & yes, it’s toxic. But I also see some of the quieter conservatives here being supportive and I’m glad to see it. That is a silver lining.. Be well.

Minorities are oversensitive and racism and racial slurs are no big deal — according to white people who have never and will never experience racism and racial slurs from the point of view of being a minority.

Ironically, and sadly, many of the comments in this thread offer further evidence in support of this young man’s concerns about racial prejudice in Humboldt.

Various commenters blamed him for being in the wrong place, lectured him on being thin-skinned or naive, accused him of lying or implied that he should just accept and get used to this kind of treatment.

Is it so hard to just admit that what happened to him was wrong, indefensible, extremely offensive, and not at all his fault?

Apparently for some, it is. Which is really pathetic.

Speak for yourself.
I’ve lived for many years in two different locations where whites were a minority. I got called my fair share of racial slurs and absolutely was denied jobs because of my race. It’s not fun, but it didn’t make me move either. Plenty of nice folks to counter those that weren’t.

As a whole, I would say that white Americans are some of the least racist people on the planet.

My POS criminal neighbor uses that language often. He seems to use the N-word without any kind of racial component. To him, in a world where calling someone an F-ing B— has lost its potency, the ability of the N-word to offend is only growing, and therefore so is its value. He uses it to describe people who call the police on him, and the police who interfere with him. He even calls his very white ex-girlfriend that word since they broke up. He similarly uses another F-word without any association with homosexuality, and even uses the term “jewish” as an insult against his own mother (that one might make the least amount of sense of all). I don’t think we will ever get to a place where people will not find ways to offend others with their language when their goal is to offend. All social progress does is redefine how they go about it.

As a redheaded grandson of a southern Kansas racist, i feel qualified to say: white racists are the snowflakes. Nick’s story should inspire empathy from any humyn being, period. Trying to hijack his story and turn it into a general discussion of Black Lives Matter, current events, etc…this demonstrates the reactionary, irrational, and paranoid foundation of racist thought in general. Not to mention you want Nick to speak for/ stand in for a race he isn’t even a part of! What are you afraid of? We are all mutts.

This county is racist AF. I saw some skinhead eating breakfast in Arcata. He was wearing his gang’s shirt and their slogan was “Power Through Money.” LOL. What a starting point for ethics. Not ironic that Money is the reason for racism in the first place, to keep the working people at each other’s throats.

“There are two types of people: them that work, and them that don’t.”

Perhaps if the white overseer and black slave could have united over this truth, we would have a more equitable distribution of wealth in this country.

Some hill towns can be sketchy but in-town and many hill towns are OK. Well, like other places. Several Mexican communities here. It *is* rough up here though. Takes a while to know people. The pot market is plunging. People are starting to go broke & some kind of “losing it”. Lots of low paying jobs. Not many decent jobs.
