[UPDATE] Vehicle Pulled Out of Humboldt Bay This Afternoon

Video by Mark McKenna

Just before 9 a.m., a Eureka Police Officer was flagged down by a group of people who told him there was a vehicle in Humboldt Bay near the Wharfinger.

The Officer confirmed that there were no occupants.

And this evening about 4 p.m., the vehicle was pulled out of the Bay by a tow truck driver with mad skills and a cute sense of humor.

Hat tip to the guy and if anyone knows his name we’ll add it.

UPDATE: And the guy with style is Danny Niles from Humboldt Towing!

Clean recovery, did an awesome job of not smashing it up on the sea wall, and protecting against fluid spills. Plus clearly he knows how to strike a pose!

Bit of interesting historic stuff. Take a look at the video.

That old ‘concrete mooring’… (which is just above the car when the towing is started), is where the old stern section of a WWII Tanker ship was tethered. Engine and generator provided power to Eureka from about 1948 to 1958.

In WWII the ship was ‘lend-leased’ to Russia. When Russia took possession it was renamed Donbass III. Just after the war, (1946) it broke in two off the Aleutian islands. The stern section was still afloat and was towed back to the USA, a 21 day trip. Stern section was claimed by the crew of the towing ship… and after a small court battle, the US paid the crew $110,000.
That formed the price of the salvaged part of the ship.

PG&E bought it and brought it to Eureka. Was moored and provided power for Eureka. It was still there when I was a kid.

Expansion of the power plant at King Salmon and completion of the big power lines running from Eureka over to the Central Valley rendered the ship obsolete and it was finally removed in the late 1958.

Neat article on the history of electric power in Eureka:

A fantastic job by Danny Niles from Humboldt Towing for getting that ditched car out of the bay without damage to anything. With no license plates shown I am guessing it was stolen. Thanks to the folks that flagged done the Eureka Police Officer. Just relieved that there were no bodies inside.

Dis someone make a “wrong turn” or was it put there on purpose? It pollutes our beautiful beaches, 🙁

It’s a fine line between the gas pedal and the brake.
