Cold Case: Seven Years Ago This Month, 22-Year-Old Casey Campbell Was Shot to Death in Eureka; His Death Remains Unsolved

Seven years ago, just before 4 a.m. on Saturday, November 15 in 2014, someone called Eureka Police reporting gunfire in the area of 15th and Williams Streets. When officers arrived, they found 22-year-old Casey Joseph Campbell, a Eureka resident, sprawled on the wet asphalt of 15th Street with a gunshot wound.

Campbell did not respond to emergency personnel. “Medics were called to the scene and lifesaving efforts were attempted, but not successful,” according to information released by the EPD that day.

Since then, not much more has been released by law enforcement.

Campbell’s murder on that rainy night is still unsolved.

According to Brittany Powell, spokesperson for Eureka Police, the department is not yet ready to release more details. But she says, they are actively looking at the case. “Over the last year we had a recently retired detective working part-time reviewing the case and attempting to identify new leads,” she told us.

A few months later,  Chief Andrew Mills called the homicide a whodunit. Campbell’s death is still a mystery.  Even though  there is nothing new to report, we just like to know that a homicide hasn’t been forgotten. We like to know that a whodunit still has a chance of being solved and that a murderer might get caught.
