Yes. Divide blue in 2 so we have (better) representation. One more Sup needed.

As long as SoHum is lumped in with Fortuna, those of us who live in SoHum will not be well represented. Fortuna is not, and never will be, part of southern Humboldt.

What do you have against Fortuna?

Nothing against Fortuna but as I stated it is not part of SoHum. Our rural and very small town residents deserve representation that advocates for our best interests.

I have absolutely nothing against Fortuna. Great town. Great people. A lot of pioneer stock. I have a lot of friends and family there.

However, the way things are districted, they lump the rural areas to be connected to high density population areas. It gives rural populations very little say over their roads, public building, etc… etc… etc.

My suggestion would be to put Fortuna and Ferndale together and make the rest of SoHum another district.

Stop taking the easy way out.

So, a tad ignorant, I confess. I get that one person reps an entire district and also that rural and city concerns are polar. But, is it also voter based? I mean, if Fortuna/Ferndale were separate from SoHum, would SoHum have the votes to get anything done? Full disclosure, I am in Eureka. I don’t want y’all voting on my backyard rights, nor do I expect to vote on yours.

A better map would be helpful, you can barely distinguish roads and small towns, much less the 299, would that be part of Sohum?

The link to the draft maps via opentownhall.com doesn’t work. Use Redistricting | Humboldt County, CA – Official Website (humboldtgov.org) instead.

Draft Plan A2 has the absurdity of putting most of downtown Eureka and west Eureka as far south as Henderson in the same district as Arcata. West Eureka doesn’t need to be beholden to whatever “solutions” to their problems get dreamed up in Arcata.

Exactly. Partly addresses a question I posed (posed? Proposed? Poised? Not poised) in a reply comment to Ernie up the list a bit.

The last thing I want is a bunch of short term college students making rules on my behalf. Once they’re out and settled, then they can vote. I never voted on local issues until I decided I was rooted and staying in the area. A topic for another time I suppose.

We in So Hum have a small population so no matter what our voices are small. At theis site https://humboldtgov.org/3106/Redistricting there is a link to something called Districtr where you can draw your own map. The end product needs to have very similar populations in each district. I made one that respected all city and district boundaries on the map and was within .49% of each other in population. I started by keeping Eureka whole since it was almost large enough to be a District on it’s own. I also wanted to keep So Hum as one. I called it Whole Eureka (I think there is a way to see all the submitted ideas. It was 1. Eureka plus Samoa, Fairhaven and King Salmon. 2. Fortuna, Ridgewood Heights, Humboldt Hill, Cutten, Batview. 3. Arcata, Manila, Indianola, Myrtletown. 4. McKinleyville, Blue Lake and north. 5. Field’s Landing, west of 101 to Loleta, through Ferndale, out 36, Rio Dell down to Shelter Cove, to Garberville and points east, up to Freshwater and ending with Willow Creek. That’s how much space we need to get 27,000+ people. People in Willow Creek might rather be with McKinleyville than us and Freshwater is ruralish and needed to make all the numbers work though would make a tough commute worse for any District wide communication. I spent a few hours on it and could not find a way to make us more compact without chopping up Fortuna and that sort of line is what is so bad about the proposed maps and I was not going to repeat it.
