Pedestrian Injured After Traffic Collision in Eureka

Pedestrian HitAbout 7:40 p.m., a pedestrian and a vehicle collided near the intersection of West Hawthorne and Broadway, according to a report to the Emergency Call Center.

The pedestrian received a ankle/foot injury and is being taken to the hospital.

According to a Facebook post made in July by Humboldt Bay Fire, “Our rates of vehicle-versus-pedestrian fatalities are…some of the highest in the country. In 2013,…California recorded 1.83 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents. Nationally, the rate was 1.34. In Humboldt that year, it was 4.44.”

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Maybe I am being a little critical but why are we still quoting statistics from 2013 for this???

even if pedestrians suddenly became able to fly that wouldn’t stop accidents on Broadway – drivers will keep crashing in to each other and keep killing each other.

Get the tweekers out of this area. Broadway is loaded with them and nothing to lose for them. The old kmart should have been turned into a drag rehab and mental health building. Huge area to fence off for daytime rec and many beds could have been put there. Could have actually been used for jail overflow also. This city has gone to shit. We never used to lock our cars or houses. They would rather put in fancy street corner a fire truck can not make if cars are in the other lane let alone a truck pulling a trailer. I parked on h st for 2 days and never saw a bike. And you want to make it two lanes. The people that run this city are cluless. Hide behind the fence they live behind and think they make it better.oh my god i can go on and on.now lets build 300 low income houses in cutten and apartments and drop the price on the houses around that area. I have been fighting homeless people behind my house already since the new ballpark has been built. Some armed some not. This shit needs to end

You do realize not every pedestrian is a worthless piece of garbage no one would ever notice missing, don’t you?
It sounds like gas needs to be five times as expensive, to reduce the number of murderous solipsists frantic to get home before Wheel of Fortune.

I wish people would stop crossing whether or not supposed to be crossing I’m sure this would save a lot of injuries

Are you saying don’t ever cross a street? That means no one can ever leave the block they are on. How would kids get to school? How would anyone walk three blocks to the market for a quart of milk for their coffee? How would I get from Low Bagels to Ramones in Old Town Eureka?

how in the fuck is anyone supposed to get anywhere without crossing the street? Even people with cars sometimes have to cross the street because they can’t get parking directly in front of their doors.

I have a better idea that would prevent a lot more injuries and be good for the planet as well – how about everyone stops *driving*?

People drive like s#!t in Eureka. Earlier this evening around 6:30 i was walking down the sidewalk on 5th st when i witnessed a near collision followed by someone pulling over erratically and jumping out of their car with a fire arm. The craziness in this town is becoming so commonplace that i didn’t even flinch and had a short conversation with “gun guy” about a road rage incident he had just experienced. Get some damn auto ticketing cameras or something! The cops dont seem to pull people over very often and this aggressive driving is rampant as a result.

The fun new crosswalks installed in town to protect pedestrians only work if the pedestrian:
A) – Uses them;
B) – Stops, looks, listens, and then walks; and
C) – Looks up from their iPod, iPhone, or whatever else.

I have had to stand my car on its nose three times in the last two weeks because of pedestrians who do not play nice and just walk. One was a middle-aged person, not a kid, who did not want to disturb their cardio, apparently!

The amount of accidents on Broadway might reflect the persons ON Broadway. It’s not necessarily the drivers fault.

Here’s an idea:

STOP BEING THE REASON PERSONS DRAWN TO THAT AREA ARE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THE BEHAVIORS THAT ARE RUINING EUREKA!

And an afterthought on the new housing that will be built:

When it is full, and more are drawn to this area, then what? You need to examine what our homeless contingent is. The last published number I can recall listed only 23% as Eureka native; the rest were from out of the area. Dear City Council, work on making something for money to migrate here, not just those who drain the coffers.

As a driver and motorcyclist, I completely agree with you. However, the pedestrian in me has to speak up and say that you forgot . . .
D) – if you’re doing endos or nosies, you’re driving too fast
E) – notice and stop for the pedestrians that are following A, B, and C.

I’ve been nearly hit at that intersection *while crossing in the crosswalk with the traffic signal while wearing light colored clothing* because drivers making turns from Hawthorne to Broadway can’t be bothered to look and see if a person is legally, safely crossing the street.

A large part of this is careless, distracted, aggressive drivers, and another large part is the utter STUPIDITY of having the “Walk” signal be at the same time as the “left turn” signal. It’s like it’s designed to kill people who are following the rules.

Reason #9999 I never drive on Broadway and honestly completely avoid that side of town all together.

As someone who sometimes has to cross Broadway (always at a traffic light, etc) I appreciate that there’s one less car out there that might kill me!
