HSU Children’s Center Receives $178,000 Department of Education Grant

Humboldt State University’s Children Center has received a four-year, $178,365 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support campus-based childcare services for low-income students.

“This financial support from the U.S. Department of Education will be vital in helping us continue to provide services to Humboldt State students, staff and faculty,” says Stephen St. Onge, AVP for Student Success.

Funded under the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program, the award can be used to support before and after-school care for school-age children, as well as preschoolers, toddlers, and infants. Students eligible to receive services for their children through CCAMPIS must be eligible for Pell grants, which are awarded based on financial need. In addition to using a sliding fee scale for the services, some grantees require students to attend parent workshops and take part in academic counseling to maximize their prospects for success in completing their higher education studies.

The HSU Children’s Center employs around 50-65 student assistants every year, many of whom are Child Development majors. The program supports the academic goals of service learning students, volunteers, observers and field placement candidates from both HSU and College of the Redwoods.

The mission of the HSU Children’s Center is to provide affordable, convenient, high quality child development services for HSU student parents and the families of the Humboldt State University community.
