Humboldt County Seeks Local Entity for Collective Cannabis Branding, Marketing and Promotion

For many decades, the cannabis industry has been a significant economic driver in Humboldt County. As cannabis emerges as a statewide industry, the county is looking at ways to maintain a competitive advantage to preserve and strengthen the regional brand. To achieve this goal, the county is issuing a new Request For Proposals (RFP), seeking a qualified local entity to work with staff on developing a marketing strategy for a distinct national and industry “branding initiative” for Humboldt County-grown cannabis along with local cannabis-related products and services.
The selected applicant will serve as the county’s lead contracted agency for cannabis marketing initiatives and will provide a broad range of professional marketing services, including promoting Humboldt County cannabis as a unique, high-quality product. The applicant will utilize and employ specific recommendations and findings of the Humboldt County Marketing Assessment. This marketing RFP and the services that will be provided are one of three programs of the county’s Project Trellis, a broad-reaching initiative aimed at supporting the local cannabis industry.

About Project Trellis:
Project Trellis is a three-tiered program that was developed to support cannabis businesses and individuals involved in Humboldt County’s cannabis industry. The program’s three levels of support include a Cannabis Business Micro-grant program, a Local Equity Program and a Humboldt County Cannabis Branding, Marketing and Promotion Program. The Micro-grant program provides cannabis businesses an opportunity to apply for funding to cover business related expenditures. The Local Equity program provides resources to local communities and individuals who have been impacted by the War on Drugs. According to the largest corporate cannabis entity this will just add more “ankle-biters.”
//Following the release of the earnings report, Tilray CEO Irwin Simon gave an interview with BNN Bloomberg. His comments about the layout of the cannabis sector attracted attention. They provided a succinct look at what is perhaps one of the biggest challenges facing the big players in the cannabis market.
Although Tilray has confirmed its spot as the leading player in the Canadian cannabis market, and provided the figures to support the claim, Simon said the company’s position is being challenged by what he described as “ankle biters,” small producers that are nibbling away at its market share.
As BNN Bloomberg reported:
“If you look at us, Hexo (NASDAQ:HEXO), Canopy Growth (NASDAQ:CGC) and Aurora (NASDAQ:ACB), all together we have 50 per cent share [of the market],” Simon said. “Underneath that, you have 450 licensed producers that are all ankle biters that are taking a little bit of share away. That’s what we have to contend with and make sure we’re selling our products and educating budtenders.”
The remarks probably did not make him any friends, but they reflect a situation on the ground that will continue to be a huge challenge—and that is brand recognition and marketing. With so many marketing products, it is difficult for consumers to know which way to turn and allow any producer to gain real traction.//

The consumer pays $150 to $300 an ounce still for dank ass weed in the state of California. Odd how your mak’in only $300. I can say direct sales of outdoor to the consumer is a minimum of $2,100 a pound, tax free and it’s delivered. Get with a cannabis delivery business down south (like Top Shelf) and grow dank ass weed.

It is much, much too late for this! This should of been of first priority to our county cannabis police( planning and building and supervisors) , making sure that Humboldt small farmers, upon whom backs this industry was grown , both physically and financially, were given the very best chance to be successful at market. Instead, they threw road blocks and expenses at us to a ludicrous degree. In the four years it took a lot of us to achieve legalization, we missed getting Humboldt out there, and missed many years of great prices. Now…. well if you run the numbers at the prices currently offered, most of us can’t stay afloat much longer . And the State of Ca ? Well they’ve opened up the industry to enormous big tech companies…. check them out online my friends, ENORMOUS! Hold on Humboldt, we’re headed for a rough ride.
I was gonna say, it was about 4 years ago when I was fussing about the need for organization and centralization of Cannabis Processing, and the sensibility of branding and marketing in a group manner…
Yes, weed was the primary economic driver, but it was totally illegal… No wonder the set of growers is so diffuse and disorganized, and now, that disorganization may well be the end of the road… And it is no wonder that incompetent and corrupt leaders and government employees are the rule, rather than an exception…
With prices falling, and overproduction from everywhere, a new plan is probably a timely idea…

Great weed can be grown in other places for much cheaper and with easier access to markets. “Legalization” killed this county and all these last-minute attempts are just that- too little and too late, Funny Note- Humboldt State now has a “Cannabis Foundation” with a symposium?!! Humboldt State beat back every attempt to associate “Humboldt” with “Cannabis” and destroyed our connection with brand recognition at a time when the entire dope-smoking world celebrated us. Fuck HSU and the City of Arcata for aggressively shutting down 4/20 events and Fuck Humboldt County for attacking us and driving away the Cannabis Cup or any other recognition. You blew it! Now you can’t get it back….Time has moved on and now that is History. Past tense. We could have owned it but short-sighted politicos with big salaries beat it up instead…That’s your government!!

Humboldt will always have a name. If product from here makes it on shelves out east, do you think the consumer is picking up weed from Oklahoma City or Humboldt County?

I’ve talked with many farmers across the industry traditional market here in Mendo prices are dropping below 300 very fast with full terms only just starting to hit the markets I can only imagine how hard to sell and prices being offered mid winter through spring. Then the new deps hit..
This corporation bought out another corporation. This market will continue to be abysmal as they want to control you. So if you’re selling Outdoor for less than $1,000, your DEP for less than $1400 or your indoor for less than $2000 that’s on you!

It’s the corporate strategy. How do you defeat this strategy, grow more really good weed. Break down you product to smaller portions. The more you get your product the way the consumer wants it the easier it is to move the product.
For me it’s still a war. Some may just see it as competition, then compete. Some may see it as capitalism, then dominate, or be dominated. Blessings!

The real issue nationally isn’t Oklahoma mids, it’s the fact that as cannabis has become less stigmatized people are willing to take the chance to grow indoor on the East Coast. The price of real estate, lease or purchase, is simply less than it is in most places in California. It allows for both legal and “traditional” operations to produce at decent scale in commercial buildings, disincentivizing buyers to travel West for product. The consumer doesn’t care enough or know enough about real cannabis to make it worth it for buyers to take heightened risks of transporting both cash and product from 3,000 miles away.
Why did the county have no outlet for legal farms … Every distro from here to Santa Barbara do not take.in … Santa Barbara has it down the growers get to fill the distros .. while here we went through all the hoops paid tax upon tax upon tax ( taxation without representation) and have no outlet in our own community for a real legal exchange ? Wtf
