A fire which broke out yesterday about 4:15 p.m. on Green Diamond property south west of Benbow burned about 8.6 acres, according to Jeremy Ward, Cal Fire HUU Battalion Chief.

One firefighter received a serious injury to their knee during the attempt to quench the flames.

“The fire was contained about 1 a.m.,” Ward told us. “A number of resources are on it today mopping up.” Extinguishing the large amount of heavy fuels in the logging area will take some time, he explained.

Green Diamond issued a press release this afternoon stating, “Green Diamond personnel and contractors coordinated with the firefighting agencies to assist with control efforts. The location of the fire occurred near an active timber harvesting operation; however, the cause is under investigation.”

Ward said that this fire is a reminder to the community that “the fire danger is still there [and] the heavier fuels are still ready to burn.”

Green Diamond expressed appreciation to the firefighters in the press release they sent out.  They wrote,

Thank you to the local fire departments and CAL FIRE for the quick response that held the fire to approximately 9 acres. Local assisting Fire Departments included: Garberville Volunteer Fire Department, Redway Volunteer Fire Department, Briceland Volunteer Fire Department, Miranda Volunteer Fire Department, and Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department.
