Upper Klamath River Salmon Quota Met

Fishing CDFW Press release from CDFW:

Based upon California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) projections of the recreational fall-run Chinook salmon catch on the Klamath River, anglers will meet the Upper Klamath River adult fall-run Chinook salmon quota below Iron Gate Dam for the 2021 season as of 11:59 p.m. on Monday, October 11.

This triggers the closure of the adult fall-run Chinook salmon fishery on the main stem of the Klamath River from 3,500 feet downstream of the Iron Gate Dam to the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec. The fishery at the mouth of the Klamath River was closed as of August 28 and will remain closed to all fishing for the rest of the calendar year, and the adult fall-run Chinook salmon fishery on the lower Klamath River was closed as of September 8.

All reaches on the main stem of the Klamath River (except within 100 yards of the mouth) remain open for the harvest of jack, two-year-old Chinook salmon less than or equal to 23 inches. All adult Chinook salmon caught must be immediately released and reported on an angler’s report card. The daily bag limit remains two fall-run Chinook salmon less than or equal to 23 inches total length per day.

Anglers may still fish for adult fall-run Chinook salmon in both the upper and lower Trinity River sectors. The daily bag limit on the Trinity River is two fall-run Chinook salmon with no more than one adult greater than 23 inches total length.

Anglers may monitor the quota status of open and closed sections of the Klamath and Trinity rivers by calling CDFW’s fishing information hotline at (800) 564-6479.

See the world didn’t come to an abrupt end with “dwindling” water in the Klamath river, and YES fish reached the required harvest quota at Iron Gate’s (first dam with hatchery). This is great news!!! Let the pros there do their work and hope to see in 3 years a good return of adult salmon

The quotas were reduced this year due to the drastic conditions.

Soon to be history, unless the dams are removed. Could you define “pros there”? I need this return to happen so the quota can rise again and remain.

Remember that time all the scientists at cdfw closed pacific halibut season in June because they projected the quota of 43,000 lbs had been met only to reopen the season in September when they revised the number to under 20,000 lbs. Yes, cdfw is good at fish guessing indeed. CDFW may have surpassed the weather man’s ability to be wrong so often and still keep their jobs.
