[UPDATE 9:55 a.m.: Video] Refusing to Be Silenced: For the Third Straight Day, Students in Humboldt County Walk Out of Classes to Protest Handling of Alleged Sexual Assaults

The red hand print usually symbolizes missing and murdered indigenous women but can also symbolize the silencing both of those who are dead and those who aren’t allowed to speak. Today marks the third day of unrest at a number of high school campuses in Humboldt County.

Hundreds of Arcata High School students walked out of class and are marching around the Plaza this morning. [Video by Mark McKenna]

Last week, concerns about how adults were handling alleged sexual assaults of classmates, led to protests by students on three campuses–Fortuna, Eureka, and McKinleyville.

Yesterday, students at South Fork High School in Miranda and Academy of the Redwoods a high school based at the College of the Redwoods also choose to walk out.

Today, over a 100 students from Arcata High have currently left class and are marching through town and to the Plaza.

Many of the students, both today and at earlier protests are wearing white. At Fortuna’s protest many also had handprint symbols on their clothing and over their mouths.

At Monday’s protest in Fortuna, most of the students protesting wore white as a symbol of solidarity with the alleged victims. But, in Fortuna, several reports on social media indicate that some students wore black in solidarity with a student they believed had been unjustly accused of sexual assault.

A small tussle broke out between a counter protestor holding a sign proclaiming, “Inocence [sic] isn’t a crime” and a member of the group holding the protest in support of the alleged sexual assault victim. [Photo by Mark McKenna]

There was at least one scuffle caught on camera above and unconfirmed reports of some vandalism.

Fortuna Police backed by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene to monitor the situation.

On Tuesday, law enforcement was called to the Miranda campus but not to the Academy of the Redwoods on the CR campus. There are no reports of any serious issues.

We’ll let the students signs, shirts, and symbols speak for their concerns in the photos below:

UPDATE 9:17 a.m.: A sexual abuse survivor spoke out to the crowd of students gathered at the Arcata plaza just a few minutes ago.

UPDATE 9:55 a.m.: Northern Humboldt Union High School District Superintendent Roger Macdonald speaks to the crowd of protesters while a student sharply questions him.

Honestly, 15 year olds protesting against sexual assault is laudable, but I think they should be protesting against 15 year-olds cruising around, drinking and god-knows- what other drugs were in use, while parents look the other way or simply just ignore them…

Sexual Assault is rude and illegal, but, drinking and cruising can kill you, and underage drinking requires a conspiracy between provider and consumer…

Fortuna is a hard-drinking town by definition, but the “Friendly City” contains a strain of hard-headed attitude along with a “leave-us-alone” personality…

These kids are not really served by skipping school and making themselves famous on Instagram/Facebook!

Better they should learn to lead by example, focus on making something out of themselves by pursuing education and enterprise, careers and lives of building the future, rather than driving around getting in trouble at 15, and then getting all “in your face” about the results of Tom-Foolery…

Word to the wise:

Life moves pretty fast, so focus on having a quality experience while leaving the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll until later…

Meanwhile, get back to work, learn to say “no”, and avoid trouble by not getting into it in the first place…

From Humboldt Deputy Sheriff’s Organization President Jamie Barney:

As the President of the Humboldt Deputy Sheriffs’ Organization, and more importantly as the father of three daughters, I stand with the Humboldt County students this week speaking up and using their voices to condemn sexual assault in all forms – especially against girls.

Right now, Humboldt County has a law enforcement staffing crisis leaving over 20 positions unfilled including a vacant position for an investigative detective dedicated to investigating crimes like sexual assault, and a vacant position whose job it would be to patrol our county beaches, like Centerville. LOCO 9/29/21. This is disgusting. Blame it on staff shortage. What a tool. Grrrrrrr……I was told he seems to blame everything on staff shortages when ever he can.

Smiling in passing is not yes. Walking in a park is not yes. Being out by yourself is not yes. It is too late to say to say no when the first notice is a physical assault. Remember to ask before expecting an answer. Putting your hands on someone is not a question.

Silence means no.
A nod means no.
I guess means no.
Not now means no.
Later means no.
A yes from yesterday does not mean yes tonight.
A yes from this morning does not mean yes tonight.
Being in a relationship does not mean yes.
Anything but an enthusiastic yes, means no.

Would that sentiment apply to a vaccine with Liability protection, or any other intrusion by an outside body onto ours?

What about a 4 trillion infrastructure bill that will fundamentally change the way your lives will be managed in the future.

WTF does any of that have to do rape? Between you and Lone Ranger we hear a continual broken record of snowflake right-wing nut-job whining about everything but the real subject.

Hey, if you don’t want a vaccine then don’t get one; no one really cares that much if you do or not. And if you want to whine about increasing the deficit, just remember the trillions Trump enlarged it. How quickly they forget.

I hope all young people remember to bring their consent forms everywhere they go. Maybe condom manufacturers could include one in each wrapper for convenience sake. Not sure about the specifics in this instance but in general it seems like there are unreal expectations for engaging in certain encounters now days.

It is an unreal expectation that a woman must give affirmative consent, or you go home without? Is sexual assault now a conservative value, or just lack of accountability? No one is saying it requires a signed and notarized consent form, but only that anything other than “yes” means you ain’t gettin’ any, Lefty.

I understand that this was not a school event, and not on school grounds. But athletes are often reprimanded for their actions outside of school.

When are we going to hear what actions the school/parents of this boy took to correct his behavior?

If these kids walked out to protest open border, runaway government spending (they will be responsible for paying back), and a green new deal that will simply make their adult lives miserable. How does the working class finance the rise of oligarchs. No more blank checks, no more spending billions of our kids futures on other countries.

These kids need to recognize sexual assault is the overt assault, the quiet assault is never as easy to see.

Joshua WoodsD

Those threats are not easily identifiable and if not taught in schools are simply unknowns to these kids. Threats of such a magnitude are slow to develop, are easily blamed on others because too few don’t actually follow current events so the threat is either not identified or blame is incorrectly placed by design of those creating those problems.

I completely agree with the protesting however, there’s an appropriate time for these events. Education suffers when students are given leeway to pursue what are typically extracurricular activities during school hours. Time that should be spent revising content, completing assessments and learning new information is instead used to march through the streets with placards in protest of a particular issue. Falling foul of attendance requirements or missing important pieces of assessment due to skipping school can also provide ramifications for students down the line.
There is also a consensus that politics and classroom should stay separate, meaning that education should not be compromised by political stances or activities. While many will contend that the school system itself is inherently political, there is a feeling that politics need not overshadow student learning. We have an obligation to teach students in our schools during school hours – that’s what our taxpayers pay for. Of course, people, including students, have the right to express their points of view. And hopefully this is happening in our schools. There is plenty of time to protest, whatever the issue may be, outside of school hours.

Oh Eugene. You sound very old. The approriate time to protest is when you see that something is wrong. These young people are demonstrating that they HAVE paid attention in class, that they UNDERSTAND their right to protest.
What they are doing is as American as apple pie. They are following in MY FOOTSTEPS as someone who protested that inglorious war you fought in so bravely.

In case you didn’t see my previous reply to your post on Monday:

I can’t think of a better reason to play ‘hookie’. The adults have already dismissed their concerns. How else can these young people be clear that this issue is important to them and that they demand attention? Unexcusable behavior by some is what created the need to demonstrate on behalf of the women and girls who have been silenced. An unexcused absence is little in comparison. I am proud of their action. Stand tall and strong.
Not all lessons are learned in the classroom.

Those are people rallying for women’s reproductive rights over the crap happening in Texas, at an event planned ahead.

The kids are responding to an issue that is right here in our communities and that they have to see daily in the schools they are in.

Completely different level of issue, exposure, and time sensitivity.

The Walk Out is a specific statement all it’s own.

If this crap continues to be ignored and go unaddressed the admins should expect more walk outs and disruption.

The kids have raised the stakes on purpose.
This is more than a protest.

It is a DEMAND for ACTION NOW.

Eugene, we protested during school to make a statement. The first period classes at Arcata High this morning were mostly less that half full. If we would have protested outside of school hours the teachers and staff could care less. If more that half of the students are gone PROTESTING they must know they need to fix something.

You’re beating a dead horse Gene.
As mentioned in other articles there have been several complaints made with NO action from the school admin.

Protesting after school hours makes it very easy for the admin to continue ignoring this critical issue.

This week’s event can not be ignored.

The admin’s of at least 3 schools have failed the students.

They are sick with it.

It has taken direct disruption to bring this issue to the community level since the admins wouldn’t address it.

Way to stand up for your rights! Way to use your right to assembly and freedom of expression. The fact that students are staging walkouts speaks volumes about where we are at as a culture. There is still a lack of accountability when it comes to sexual assault. Prevention and proof are still seen as the survivors responsibilities. The kids are saying enough. Accountability? The reason we are protesting is so all of the rapists out there get held accountable. If they did, we wouldn’t be out of school protesting. We are protesting because we are survivors. 1 out of 3 women get raped in their lifetime. Think about that.

Given the fact that you are under 21, you are not legally able to consume alcohol, and this is a great place to start addressing vulnerabilities in your program.

One in five women in the United States experienced completed or attempted rape during their lifetime. Nationwide, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. Nearly a quarter (24.8%) of men in the U.S. experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime. One in three female victims of completed or attempted rape experienced it for the first time between the ages of 11 and 17. Forty percent of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to police in 2017, but only about 25% were reported to police in 2018.

I am one hundred percent in support of these students and stand in solidarity with those speaking out against sexual harassment.
However, I would suggest using a different color for the paint, maybe Black? It is unfortunately appropriating the missing and murdered indigenous women’s movement and further silencing indigenous voices if people begin confusing the two. Everyone’s voice needs to be heard and not overlooked or silenced. Red paint is to show solidarity with the indigenous women who have been missing or murdered. Sexual assault protests address women being silenced in sexual assault cases, black would be a better representation of this and would be respectful to the indigenous movement as well💯

This thread is a prime example of extraneous nonsense clouding a simple issue, so let me restate what should be obvious.

At least two children have been sexually assaulted.

At least one assailant is an adult.

What is to be done about it?

Let’s focus on those three statements. Forget the tired old kneejerk politics, the 1950s solution of muzzling the children, the personal prejudices, or any other irrelevancy. This is criminal activity we are discussing.

It also happened before school was in session for the school year at a party in the beach the kids were drunk why is it the school’s fault when they weren’t even attending for this year and it happened outside of fortuna police jurisdiction so why are fortuna pd being harassed. Sexual assault is horrific however why did it take a couple months and a friend to turn it in? What he did was wrong but this boy is being convicted before tried. And these kids need to do some research of the law before condemning our officers. Parents need to known where their kids are and what they are doing

A Parent in the Know

It was laid at their feet, and instead of investigating and reporting, like first reporters are supposed to do, they literally made excuses and didn’t lift a finger. How are we supposed to trust the administrators to protect our kids, if this is their reaction? It does not matter when it happened or where, fact is, it was brought to their attention and they did nothing. What if your child went to them and that was their reaction? Imagine that feeling.

All of you should imagine that feeling, because that is what perpetuates sexual assault in schools. The lax response to serious allegations should have consequences, like loosing funding for head counts in school. Hitting them where it hurts seems like an appropriate response to their inaction.
