That seems to happen quite a bit around here. I can recall at least three from the north jetty. Seem to remember a guy driving his truck out there and getting stranded. Had to be rescued. And a few from the south jetty also. And several people getting swept into the ocean by sneaker waves. It’s a treacherous ocean around here at times.

I love fishing out of CC. They have a break wall there that is somewhat different than a jetty. It doesn’t have a bay behind it that flushes twice a day and creates enormous standing waves in the entrance and other ones further in the bay. Plus the harbor is set up with a multi lane launch and two cleaning tables in lit up, fenced off buildings. Unlike Eureka, they care about fisherman there and the money they bring to the economy. They also have sneaker waves there that break over the break wall, you got that anyplace swells meet the land, but overall it’s much safer to fish out of than Eureka. A good historical book on the subject is Night Crossings by Jon Humboldt Gates.

Eureka and Humboldt county are way behind the times in decent boat launching facilities. The leaders care more about murals,

There is a big warning sign on that break wall saying that it is very dangerous to walk out on it. IIRC, there are a bunch of rocks on East side of that wall that would be very dangerous to hit if you got washed off break wall.

It’s treacherous all the time. Having grown up here, Dad’s number one rule ” Never turn your back on the ocean” With that, we could clam, fish, dive, boat, surf, paddleboard, hang out or ride on the beach etc. and enjoy ourselves without too much paranoia ! (you know how many non-locals get caught up in the bay and head for open ocean? too many). That might be a good slogan to post on the entire shoreline.
