This is a press release from the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services:

Rural residential homeowners, agricultural producers and people interested in protecting local watersheds are invited to attend a water efficiency workshop Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 7 p.m.

The county’s Drought Task Force is partnering with Sanctuary Forest’s Water Programs Director Tasha McKee to lead the virtual event.

Sanctuary Forest is a local land and water trust that focuses on conserving the Mattole Watershed and surrounding areas.

Participants will learn about successful strategies employed by Sanctuary Forest to engage the Mattole River community in promoting water storage and seasonal forbearance of surface water extractions, as well as impacts of water diversion for domestic, agricultural and institutional use and the benefits of storing water from the wet season for use during the dry season. These projects improve water security for families, farms, businesses and institutions, while reducing impacts to dry season streamflow for the benefit of fish and wildlife and result in increased water storage for fire preparedness.

Representatives from the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Division of Environmental Health (DEH) will also discuss waterless toilet systems and graywater systems, and staff from the county’s Building and Planning Department will be on hand to discuss permitting for these systems as well as rainwater catchment and storage.
