Cats have been put in the same category as rats because of their impact on the environment. Cats that go outside kill hundreds of birds locally and millions nationally and will also kill wood rats and mice. One of the reasons you don’t see owls and other birds of prey. My neighbor has three cats she feeds outside. One cat is a feral cat that she feeds because the cat always shows up at dinner time. I used to have birds that nested in my trees, but the cats killed all of them. The only birds the cats won’t mess with are the Ravens. Ravens kill birds also. I think Ravens are protected. Nothing feeds on the cats. Even possums and raccoons won’t mess with the cats. If I wanted a pet I would prefer a dog. They actually like humans. Cats could care less!

Historians have theorized that the Black Death (the bubonic plague) that struck Europe in 1348 may well have been partly a result of the killing off of vast numbers of cats, which were seen as witches’ and sorcerers’ familiars and agents of Satan. The cats kept the rodent population in check. The rats (and their fleas, the source of the plague) were allowed to multiply, the result being one of the worst disasters in Western history. That plague killed off about 1/3 of Europe’s population. The Egyptians worshipped the cat; cats kept them from starvation and pestilence by keeping their great granaries free from rats. Think twice before you condemn all cats as useless and destructive predators. And Neville – you’re beautiful! I would if I could.

Thank you. Have heard that.

Yes, cats have helped get rid of vermin for at least 10,000 years, according to CNN.

Excellent comment.

And a dog, no doubt, would prefer you. Dogs are great.
But I am a cat lover — and I have prepared a whole long rant about the cat v. bird thing, which I will mercifully summarize for you. HUMAN BEINGS kill birds! (and of course much other wildlife as well). Humans clear natural habitat for our own use, much of it unnecessary. Humans put pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizers, etc. into the soil and water. Humans build tall buildings with lots of glass, and birds flying into those windows die by the millions each year. Dogs also kill birds, and assist humans in hunting them, making us more efficient killers. And yes, many humans love cats and keep the species going. We could do more to reduce the numbers of feral cats who have to kill to live, and we should keep our cats indoors whenever possible. But we humans have no business denouncing cats as vicious killers. Unlike us, cats do not usually kill their own kind; they do not raise armies and develop weapons that can kill thousands of their species who are innocently lying in bed or going to school.
And that’s the short version.
