With the South Fork of the Eel River reaching a new low last week, worries about water loving wildlife began to trickle through the community. But, local photographer Ann Constantino lucked into an encounter on the 17th before this weekend’s rains that offered a bit of joy–A family of otters played, foraged for food, and groomed each other just before the water began returning to their habitat.Otter portrait [Photo by Ann Constantino]

“Check it out, one of those camera things. Let’s go. I bet they film us. Watch me run this rapid. Wasn’t that a stellar performance. I just might win an Otter Award.”

In Anchorage people have been getting attacked by otters, just a thought to be cautious around any critter and throwing out even apple cores out your windows encourages shunks to protrol the roads, hence getting hit by vehicles. Give a hoot …

they often migrate across the land’ follow streambeds upslope to ponds. They also do that in the dead of winter when the river is at floodstage

This is why we get so emotional when we see illegal diversions in the headwaters of creeks and streams that feed the local rivers. We need to continually be on the lookout for any of these diversions that are not permitted and maintained, and that take all the flow out of small headwater water courses.

Be vigilant out there, don’t forget what it is we are protecting! For the environment and the community.
