As Stronger Assault Weapons Ban Takes Effect, Attorney General Bonta Announces Opening of Assault Weapons Registration Period

Press release from the California Department of Justice:

As Senate Bill 118 goes into effect, expanding the state’s assault weapons ban, California Attorney General Rob Bonta today announced owners of firearms that are now banned by the bill will be able to register their firearms during an upcoming three-month period. In 2020, SB 118, which then-Assemblymember Bonta voted to pass, broadened the state’s definition of “assault weapons” to include semiautomatic centerfire firearms with certain specific features. Californians who lawfully possessed these firearms before September 1, 2020, must register their eligible assault weapons with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) between 9 a.m. PST on October 1, 2021, until 11:59 p.m. PST on December 31, 2021.

“SB 118 closed a loophole in our law’s definition of assault weapons that will prevent gun manufacturers from developing and selling these firearms in California,” said Attorney General Bonta. “Many of our laws are currently under attack in the courts, but my office will continue to defend the commonsense gun laws that have worked to keep Californians safe.”

SB 118, which went into effect on September 1, 2020, changed the definition of an assault weapon to include a semiautomatic centerfire firearm that is not a rifle, pistol, or shotgun, and:

The bill exempts individuals who lawfully possessed firearms that meet the new definition before September 1, 2020, as long as they register their firearms within DOJ’s registration period: 9 a.m. PST on October 1, 2021, through 11:59 p.m. PST on December 31, 2021.

Beginning October 1, 2021, at 9 a.m., registration applications may be submitted electronically at www.oawr.doj.ca.gov or by submitting the Other Assault Weapon Registration Form (BOF 1039), which is available for download from the Forms and Publications page on the DOJ website. Additional information, including registration fees and requirements, can be found at www.oag.ca.gov/firearms/oawr-notice.

It is important to note that the registration period for “other assault weapons” differs from and is not an extension of the bullet button assault weapons registration period.

Watch firearm owners rush to comply with this brilliant piece of legislation.

The reason “they”, the enemy of freedom, cannot take our guns, is that we have guns. They want our guns so they can round us up, through agenda 21, put us in boxes, and control us. What we say, how we dress, what we think, and whether we can worship or not. Newsome just signed a bill to shut down new suburban housing plans, and wants to force people to live in ghetto boxes, and take away private land ownership. Without private land, we cannot feed ourselves, and must depend on huge corporate farms, as “they” control our food. Bonta is an evil man, as are his gang of govt thugs who do his bidding. But they are out numbered, they are out gunned. Bonta and his commie gang cannot control or register ghost guns, which are prolific in our society, made here in the USA. When they come for you and your land and your freedom, are they going to be met with resistance, or sheep?

Jeez a moly! Dude cool your ‘roids. You can own it and register it, or hide it. No big deal. The Taliban is still using AK-47s manufactured in the 50s.
Sorry gun control side, the funny thing about stuber’s freakout, is that it’s aimed at pointless-feelgood-soundbite laws that never really did anything. All California has ever done is outlaw wannabe “tacti-cool” accessories. I can still go out and buy the same rifle, just with a nice ol fashioned grampy stock. Besides, just drive to Reno, you might as well hop out at a bazar in Pershawar.
Pro tip: proposed new gun laws are actually sometimes used to bring out RIGHTWING voters (2022 brings an actual election in CA) just as new (more restrictive)marijuana laws bring out Left-wingers.

Unconstitutional per se. And too vague. Plus good luck enforcing it. But this is what you get when you vote for a democrat. Control is their mantra.

Once again good citizens become criminals at the hands of the assholes that can’t control themselves. I would love to see the statistics of how many actual shootings involve an assault rifle compared to pistols.

The latest FBI figures (2019) show over 10,000 gun homicides with only 364 being from rifles. That is ALL rifles, not just “assault weapons.”

So yeah, handguns are the preferred weapon for criminals.

No one said it would stop all crime. But it might inhibit a few psych cases, that would shoot at you just because they can.

Chicago passed a law against possessing ANY weapon. It completely eliminated crime.(*)

Australia disarmed the people. Now the government is in complete control and they are doing the right thing for the people, whether they like it or not. Just imagine a government staffed by overgrown hall monitors. Do you like that kind of life?

I always try to do the right thing, I just don’t like being told what that is.

“Psych cases” don’t buy guns at Big-5.

Which proves the point – More laws will not do anything. You will never stop someone from hurting others. It just won’t happen. You have more guns then people in the US. How do you put all that back in the tube? Unfortunately, in this world, you fight fire with fire. Most people willing to hurt others are not the kind of folks you can reason with. And when dealing with such individuals, I’d prefer to have the same tools of destruction as they do. So the question still remains, why does the government want to disarm law abiding citizens?

Gee sounds gret in theory but not realistic. They will get illegal mags if they want them or do you think they only use legal magazines to commit mass murder?

What about the.poor bastard in remote.areas.like.say petrolia where police are an hour away and 6 armed thugs.come into the house? Oh yea he only needs 6 bullets riggt? Ever been in a gunfight? Well sometimes one bullet is not enough and accury goes to shit on the two way range.

Think about it…..

Yes, most people have no clue bad guys don’t just stand still while you carefully aim at them. They can not grasp that the bad guy doesn’t just instantly fall down dead once hit with a single bullet. They have no understanding of what adrenaline and fear does to your aim and vision. They have no comprehension that it takes less than one second to change a magazine in a gun, so there is really no difference at all in having one 30 round magazine vs three 10 round magazines.

This is just a political feel good law that does literally nothing to prevent crime.

There is no firearm that is listed as an “assault weapon” in any catalog, I own rifles, not assault weapons. How many murders in these day’s are done with a long gun? Officials are after legal gun owners, your neighbors, how will this stop the next thug. Oh right! He’ll register his gun. What a crock of shit!

So just to clarify for those who dont understand. This law is trying to close a loophole that allowed people to have shorter length semi auto gun. Basically a ar-15 pistol. When you buy a gun its legally defined as a shotgun, pistol, rifle or other. There was a company making the shorter version of the ar-15 and it was listed as an other, therefore bypassing the bans. This law does close a loophole, but very few people even purchased this gun, the gun manufacturer only made these models because of previous bans.

I’m not sure if most people who purchased one of these wanted a “shorter length semi-auto gun.”
Most probably just wanted a full featured rifle with a removable magazine (standard AR platform) that can be purchased in most states in the country and the Franklin Arms Title 1 gun was a way to do that legally. Bullet button, Hellfighter kit, etc… it’s just a cat and mouse game that does nothing other than take money from law abiding gun owners. No effect on criminals whatsoever.

Senate Bill 118 is just plain BS from the get go. The California government would like nothing more than to go house to house and demand you turn over all your guns. It will never stop crime committed by criminals period. All the gun owner’s I know have sporting rifles, not (ASS)ault rifles. When it is time to vote please remember these crazy ass Bills they are trying to shove down our throats!!!

There is always something behind the curtain that nobody sees. California passes laws that you have to fight with your own money, While California fights FOR these laws with… you guessed it… Your own money. (taxes).

The plan is to break the back of the opposition. Eventually you will give up. To resist is futile. Turn in your guns, you lose.

Do I have to keep using the sarcasm font?

You lost me. What does this have to do with gun control. And also what was the outcome of the investigation? Did they send him to Gitmo? Did they execute him as a traitor? His contact with her occurred in 2014, she worked on his re-election campaign. If you have more information on this case please call the FBI. Background checks are done on congressmen and women. And I am sure the CIA and others have a warehouse full of info on the Chinese government.

There is no such thing as a law that is constitutional if it attempts to make a type of weapon illegal. The second amendment protects the right to bear arms, period. The laws to make it illegal for non citizens to bear arms are fine as the constitution doesn’t give them rights. The laws to keep criminals from possessing guns are based on criminal activity, so they are fine. Otherwise, the liberals and commies have been passing illegal laws that don’t prevent crime. They simply attempt to make law abiding citizens, trying to protect themselves and their families Into criminals. The ones committing crimes against the citizens are the lawmakers. They are the ones who should be locked up for crimes against Americans.

Nope. Instead what do they do? They eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for crimes involving firearms… if this doesn’t make their agenda blatantly obvious to people, I don’t know what will..
