[UPDATE 5:34 p.m.: Photos] Fire in the Salmon Creek Area West of Miranda

A fire is burning in the Upper Samuel’s Loop Road area off Thomas Road off Salmon Creek Road west of Miranda this morning. A neighbor called it in about 6:49 a.m. and says the area is on the Mattole Canyon side below the area known as Top Shop.

According to Jeremy Ward, Cal Fire HUU Battalion Chief, the fire is about a 1/4 acre in size already but moving at a slow rate of spread.

There are engines already on scene but no air support at this early hour.

UPDATE 8:52 a.m.: Jeremy Ward from Cal Fire tells us that forward progress has been stopped. He is headed to the area to investigate the cause of the fire.

UPDATE 12:56 p.m.: The fire is in the mop up stage.

And mostly we don’t get to see the firefighters after their hot, hard work for hours to mop up the mess but this one is this reporter’s son and I caught a photo of him when he stopped by to reassure the family that the mop up was nearly complete.

Not a likely location, those fires were all quite close to 101.

and they were all determined to be caused by a single vehicle.

you said in your own words that you would believe the investigators conclusion and you have faith in her. whats the deal? they were found to be all one vehicle, all 8. these roadside fires that are all in one directions are always found to be a vehicle. its as if you think every fire is arson. bell springs was likely some idiot that pulled over onto the grass to let a growdozer pass. logic solves most of these fires. the ice plant in Eureka that burned up in a flash was likely arson, why, because the asbestos removal cost was estimated around 3 million. the gym behind the movie theater in McK was likely arson, why, because the pool foundation failed inspection requiring a complete rebuild. once again, logic. arson always has a motive.

There hasn’t been any lightning locally for almost a month; all these many fires in SoHum and NoMen are HUMAN CAUSED.
An idiot with an untended generator or dragging chain is as bad as an arsonist.
People, please get your shit together!

Hey now dont give us misfits a bad name. I often call southern hum the island of misfit toys (older folks will get the xmas special reference). As a misfit toy so to speak, I loved th “fit” I felt when I got to so hum.

Misfits and true outlaws are usually not idiots. Quirky yes but not dumb.
As societal misfit/true outlaw types go, folks usually want to draw the least attention possible to themselves. Which means not driving like a dumbass or causing fires or the like.
Just sayin

It’s just a matter of time before a wind driven fire blows through so-hum too.
That whole area needs periodic and healthy controlled burning to open up the understory, but it’s hard to pull off with such a densely populated area with hundreds upon hundreds of smaller parcels owners.
As we’ve seen, not even fuels reduction and controlled burns can stop these new mega-fires.
It’s a start though, and surely helps reduce the danger of a normal fire.
Anybody with wood siding, firewood stacks, wood decks or anything combustible near their valuables assets is tempting fate.
Start taking the trees out around your house, no bird habitat briars allowed, side your structures with metal or cement siding.
Build subterranean dwellings.
Bury your water lines if possible.
In 5 to 10 years, every watershed will have been smoked out at this rate.
Fires good, but this is too much too fast.
Literally 90 percent of the conifers on the large creek I live on(as big as the Mattole) are like standing charcoal statues.
nothing left.
hardwood stump sprouts are chest high already, and strangely Yerba Santa growing vigorously in what used to be Doug fir/madrone forest.
Maybe Yerba Santa can offer the cure..

Another miraculous save for the area. Amazing response by inspired locals. If it would have been windy it would likely have been an inferno. Given that this has been the windiest year of the last 30, due to the larger process of desertification, lack of wind on this fire was very lucky. Throughout the pac nw we have managed the forest into kindling, so what result could possibly be expected besides catastrophic “wild”fire? Under natural and Indian stewardship, the forests seem to have been all old growth coast to coast, so where exactly was the “catastrophic” Wildfire? Logging and it’s cumulative impacts are the catastrophe. It’s not global warming it’s local logging happening everywhere all at once with modern equipment plus the cumulative impact of logging. Early logging and ranching made the Sahara desert In africa 10,000b.c.-8,000b.c. and Colonial logging drastically changed the climate on the east coast of the USA. My neighbor in arcata whose dad ran the streetcar in eureka in the 1800s told me that before the heavy industrial logging of the 1940s there was so much fog in the humboldt bay between arcata and eureka that you couldn’t see to drive and there was a guide pace car that you had to follow. Even since I moved to this region the fog in salmon creek has Relatively speaking, vanished. This is primarily due to local logging. I believe that the timber harvest plan rubberstamper regulators at CDF and USFS need to be sued for arson so that forests can be managed to bring back the old growth ASAP- even the arcata community forest cuts the biggest regrowing trees… the return of old growth characteristics should be the primary focus worldwide, and the biggest trees in a forest should almost NEVER be cut. current logging practices are worse than ever due to greenwashing- a lot of people think it’s “better” now… the forest biomass deficit from logging the pac nw and NorCal today is causing the SAHARA EFFECT on the interior of the entire American West and there’s nary a word said about it.

And that's a good thing

Salmon creek, and Humboldt bay are two very different ecosystems, with very different geography.

It would be nice if the CHP actually did their job and patrolled 101 for drivers who drag chains etc. Instead of violating garberville drivers every chance they get
