Look how cute I am. Let me strike another pose. Ok, take another photo. I’m so soft. Don’t you just want to pet me. I’ll lick you with my scratchy tongue. No, no. Don’t look behind you. Look at my spots. The cuteness is all right here. OK MOM. NOW!!!

It’s ok to approach the cubs if your vaccinated, it will protect you from mommy meow, or atleast it won’t be as severe of an injury if attacked.

Warning students?
What’s with the outright prejudice against mountain lions?
Are mountain lions like the super predators Fuhrer Biden told me about in the 90’s?
Imagine if CR warned students about certain types of humans!
Ignorance and bigotry on full display, thanks CR

Is this a legit reply…? Usually the trolls are obvious, but I am so not sure if this is straight up snowflake-ness or a well thought out sarcastic and therefore funny comment

I can’t tell either. Sarcasm is hard to read in text. But it’s an online forum for humboldt, which makes it more than likely that this person is legit making fun of people who do things like trust science and try to build racial equity.

Are you kidding these kids are the generation that ate tide pods.
They need warning labels on their shoe strings. May cause you to fall if not tied.

I think Canyon oak may be confusing Mountain Lion with Cougar. While cougar is a synonym for Mountain Lion, it is also an entirely other kind of predator. Often found at nightclubs, it is definitely worthy of warning young, new students.

Are those cubs vaccinated?

If you see those cubs on or near the campus, remember mama lion is not very far away. Come between the cubs and mama and your may before a lion attack victim. If you are near them just slowly turn and walk away. Any sudden movements or loud noises may trigger mama to go after you. I would hope the CDFW would trap the cubs and mom, and move them out of the area for their safety and yours.

My daughter just moved in and the college hasn’t addressed this at all. She had just gone to breakfast and texted me after she received alert, asking me what to do. I told her to stay where she was and call campus security. She said when she left her room she had a feeling and thinks the sound she heard was one of the three cubs. They were just walking around the dorm, and yes, the mom had to be close by. I want to see the mom and cubs relocate the mama and cubs for all safety.

It’s somewhat rare to see them. Not rare that they are there. If this particular mom has become visible, that is unusual. But moving them- much harder to do than you think- would leave the other 5 or 6 that are likely there anyway.

Lots of deer food around that campus. Momma won’t go far.

Martin,
Never turn your back on a Mt Lion unless you’re playing hard to win a Darwin Award.

Non-fiction, I think you need to read my comment again. Turning and slowly walking away greatly reduces your chances of being attacked. The same can be said for bears. I have hunted in Alaska on the Kenai, which is full of bears. The guides have given me life saving information on what to do when you encounter a bear. I will continue to follow their guidelines gained from years of guiding. Do what you want I don’t care.

Personally, I would back away while facing the cat or bear but whatever they do for bears in Kenai is OK with me. They don’t have cougars, right? Cats chase stuff. Facing away gives the cat a clear shot at your neck which is a fave bite target. You never kept cats? If I’m armed, I will back away from a bear or cat so I can shoot NOW if charged.

I’m afraid if a cat or bear ate me, it would be bad for their cholesterol and triglycerides. Diarrhea, too. Mom would have rich milk, so that’s cool.

Better require all students and faculty to get their lion vaccination.

Of course there’s going to be cougars on campus. CR still has a football team.

Since 1890 there have been less than 25 mountain lion attacks on humans in California. Granted 18 have been since 1986, 3 fatal, as people encroach more and more on lion habitat ( like around here). I once heard Ken Keasey (name drop!) say referring to a sign in Yellowstone that cautioned “Beware of the Bears” that it should say instead “Be AWARE of the Bears.” Yeah, it can happen, but if you stay aware it’s unlikely that you’d get between mom and cubs. I’m no big cat expert but I’ve never heard of any instance of an encounter with a lion in these parts where the cat has done anything but get away from the human as fast as possible.

I’m not including as happening “in these parts” the story of the older gent in Prairie Creek SP where the young lion got the dude’s whole head in his mouth but released it when his wife stabbed the lion in the eye with a ballpoint pen she extracted from his shirt pocket. But, yes, it was in Humboldt County.

Douglas, like I mentioned in my comment “if” you get between the mother lion and her cubs your chance of being attacked is very high. They respond just like bears do. Come between the cubs and mom, or approach to closely by either seeing them or not, many times you will be attacked, or killed. Lions are powerful, and can bring down a full grown deer and kill it with no problem. You can be AWARE, but sometimes you just won’t see them until it is too late. Be safe Douglas when you are out in the hills.

Just keep your distance from the kittens so mom will not attack you and will be able to care for her babies. PLEASE. Out-of-Towners, this is part of the Humboldt experience. Enjoy it. Binocs, telescopes and long lens telephoto cameras are OK. Keep your distance.
