Providence Hospitals in Northern California Recognized as High Performing by US News & World Report

Press release from Providence St. Joseph Health:

Four Providence hospitals in Northern California (formerly Providence St. Joseph Health) were recognized by US News & World Report as High Performing for their performance in treating a variety of commonly occurring conditions and medical procedures.

“At Providence, we are committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients,” said Roberta Luskin-Hawk, M.D, Chief Executive for Providence in Humboldt County. “Our caregivers in Humboldt are pleased to be recognized once again for their unwavering commitment to providing personalized, compassionate care and the best outcomes for our patients.”

U.S. News generates these hospital rankings by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals with the goal of helping patients decide where to receive care. The publication focuses on a variety of specialties, procedures, and conditions and only a small minority of hospitals achieved the “high performing” distinction in these areas.

Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka and Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna were recognized as “high-performing” for the following procedures and/or conditions treated:

Providence St. Joseph Hospital

  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Heart attack
  • Kidney failure
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Pneumonia

Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital

  • Pneumonia

Other Providence hospitals recognized by US News & World Report in Northern California were Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center (Napa County) and Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital (Sonoma County).

Well. Let us prey…

Remember, Providence bought your hospitals in 2016 and quickly tried to sell them to Adventist Health:

https://napavalleyregister.com/community/calistogan/news/proposed-adventist-and-st-joseph-partnership-rejected-by-state/article_16dc97bd-98bf-5f74-ac4a-d4a77ba74b7d.html

This awful corporation spends inordinate time tooting their own horn, while making huge profits on the backs of the community and the employees…

Providence never, ever hires anybody full-time! They will offer “per diem” employment, with no benefits, and if you accept the job, you will be shuffled to night shift immediately.

They will expect you to become a card-carrying Catholic, immediately upon being hired, and, they will force you to come to a “retreat”, the purpose of which is “double-secret Catholic indoctrination”, and, if you refuse, your “per diem schedule” will be cut to “no hours at all”…

At St Joseph’s, you will be expected to become a humble servant of Jesus and the Church, and they will want you to “take out the trash”, no matter your position, age, or experience.

Then, they will only offer full-time-benefited employment, if you accept Graveyard, on a permanent basis…

St Joseph’s is constantly hiring and firing every level of staff, from Managers to trainees, and the employees finally voted in Unions, which is a great example of what happens in the downward spiral of ordinary repressively managed hospitals…

If there’s a Union, don’t work there!

Old school hospitals which keep their employees “down”, are never-ever good places to work, but, if the hospital is elected “high performing”, it is usually a reflection of the fact that there is no local competition…

St Joe’s: It’s not only what you got, it’s ALL you got…

Save yourself! Don’t work here, and remember, Redwood will be closed, permanently, within 3 years of this writing! You read it here first…

St Joseph’s/Providence! The Hospital Corporation with no charm, but plenty of strangeness!

“The worst HR department in the industry, 10 years running…”

It’s not that I don’t believe you about St Joe’s being an employer with an agenda that creates problems. It’s that the socialized agenda of current politics has left no other hospital system possible.

Small hospitals with a mixture of local service to the public and wanting to make enough money to keep going have been put out of business by ACA with its legal demands for big city hospital standards and a requirement for cost cutting public funding. A small hospital can`t afford to have the regulated standards of personnel and equipment the government requires without a large population using it to spread out the cost. And the government increasingly demands everyone has access to while simultaneously paying only parts of cost. Welcome to a world where good government is defined as creating a populace uninterested in responsibility for their actions yet expecting others to pay for they want.

VMG, hope things are well with you and yours. Lack of competition may be the problem in Humboldt, but that’s not the case in Santa Rosa where Providence competes with Sutter and Kaiser Permanente.

I recently had x-rays done in Eureka and the the tech was excellent.

As a recent patient at Redwood Memorial, I feel I can give an honest comment. As I wasn’t able to get out of bed to use the bathroom facilities without help, I had to buzz for a nurse. Several times, I buzzed and got someone over the speaker who said that someone would be with me “in a few minutes” Welllll, that “few minutes” turned out to be a minimum of 15 minutes and once, a full half hour. The staff never appologized for the delay. They were very lucky that, with one exception, I have good holding power.

I wonder what the lady is smoking who thinks that health care is good up here. I guess if your goal is to perform at 20%, and you manage 21% that’s supposed to be some kind of “accomplishment.” We still don’t have an urgent care, in fact, they closed the St Joe’s urgent care after spending millions to create it. General Hospital’s handicapped access is still BS, the signs are all wrong and they cant be bothered to fix it, 5 years and counting. Their staff hates working there because they are grossly mistreated and local health is garbage because the monopoly ate all the doctor’s offices and only staffs the rooms with visiting Locums so every visit is start all over again with someone who won’t be there next visit, and then you start all over. No doctor believes prior diagnosis, so tests are run over and over. Probably very profitable, but an utterly crappy experience for the patient and their wallet. All they want is all our money. Other than that, Providence doesn’t give a **** about any of us.

Yes . As you say almost the local doctors were gobbled up by St. Joe’s. Ask yourself why. Not just why Providence got to this state but also why competition doesn’t exist. Ask why Providence doesn’t have to worry about what you think. Ask what’s going to happen if they move out, which is the source of their power. Who would replace them? Ask why rural places no longer have any pull with government yet government still controls what they can do for themselves.

Auntie, I don’t know the answers to your great questions but I will make some guesses.

Why were most of the local doctors gobbled up by St. Joe’s.
my guess: St. Joe’s is best hospital in Humboldt.

Why competition doesn’t exist.
My guess: cuz Humboldt population is small and rural we can’t afford more than 1 good hospital.

Why Providence doesn’t have to worry about what you think.
My guess: no competition.

What’s going to happen if they move out?
My guess: we are SOL.

Who would replace them?
I have no idea.

Why do rural places no longer have any pull with government yet government still controls what they can do for themselves.
My guess: California state govt has all the power. Not many voters up here and most of those voters are ok with being told what to do by state govt. A single party democracy is not a real democracy.

This is a press release by providence that conveniently skips all the areas in which they are poorly rated.

Providence is a predator extracting wealth from our community to grow their $15 BILLION coffers, at the cost of our health.

I am a medical assistant for providence and enjoy working there. Our patients are great, the location is great, staff is awesome, and we also get paid well (which you need to if you live in Humboldt county).
Anytime you work for a corporate entity, there are rules you live by which can sometimes be a downfall compared to “local hospitals”- which I have also worked for.

Remember to be patient with staff, as we are all affected by covid (no matter what hospital- or clinic). There are many places that are short staff so- one person is doing the work of many.

The medical field is what we’ve chosen for our profession, but right now we are fighting a battle that has (what feels like) no end in sight.
Hateful and spiteful words I see a lot in the comment section, which saddens me.
In these times of darkness, be patient, be forgiving, be kind, be loving, give, smile when you don’t feel like it, and remember eventually we will be on the other side of this.

Why are the nurses constantly being required to raise their patient numbers against all medical standards?

Peace be with you…

Hospital employees are beautiful, and I stand with them.

I am sure that Providence was forced to negotiate with the Unions which the employees eventually voted in.

I myself, will not join a Union, since the Union gloms a significant portion of each paycheck, in return for, hmmmmmm, nothing…

Unions are what happens when hospitals won’t treat employees fairly, with dignity and respect, but, Unions don’t treat rank and file fairly either!

We do hope that MA’s make more than working at McDonalds, and I myself worked at local hospitals (which totally suck), as well as Redwood (which was absolutely the worst place I have ever worked), so, hang in there and go to Nursing School ASAP, then go to Sonoma State and get a BSN and then a PA if you can…

Good luck, and I hope you work somewhere better, someday!

Lots of other hospitals, lots of other jobs…

Religous prohibitions on certain medical procedures make your boasting moot. If one cannot obtain the services one needs and wants that are legal and recognized as rights, the system is SUBSTANDARD

While I see validity in some of the comments above, I have had nothing but positive experiences with St. Joseph’s in Eureka. The people in the oncology/hematology department are awesome.

I had to go to the ER a little while back due to extreme blood loss and ended up being hospitalized for a few days. All of the doctors, nurses, technicians and staff were great…thank you!

Full disclosure…
While I am not in the same camp as Chick-fil-A in regards to their politics, I love eating there when I am on a road trip…the waffle fries rock,,,and they actually pride themselves in the concept of customer service.

I would really like to see that hospital shut down and have it replaced with a hospital that is concerned with patient care more that patients money. They also have the doctors that use the hospital caring for the money also. My brother was in there for pneumonia. His doctor told him after 9 days that he could be released the next day. Later that day the doctor told him the hospital would release him till the the day after. Well the day he was originally to be released several different doctors came in and looked at his chart and asked how he was doing. My brother had insurance and I am sure his insurance got billed by each of those money grabbing doctors for a “hospital visit”. The hospital billed his insurance company $100,000 for a 10 day stay in the hospital. That is $10,000 a day! Seems that there is something wrong with the whole scenario.

I would never choose to have surgery done here. I would never trust this place for any diagnostic other than very simple. They have missed pretty basic stuff with many people I know over the years and they almost killed a few before they were able to get away to real hospitals in Santa Rosa or SF. Maybe they can set a broken bone or stop bleeding. Of course if you have something traumatic and immediate and you are here then you must go to St. Joe’s and pray! Then- as fast as you can- get the heck out and go to a real hospital!! I love living here but our biggest shortfall is the local medical care and especially this hospital…even though it is better than Mad River, Fortuna, Garberville (and maybe Willits?). But yeah- run, hop, skip or drive away to a real hospital!
