Eureka Orders Masking Indoors at City Facilities After Sampling of Wastewater Shows Virus Concentration Higher Than 99% of Recent Samples Nationwide

Press release from the City of Eureka:

Hello. I’m Mayor Susan Seaman. The City of Eureka is still working tirelessly to support the health and well-being of our citizens, our community, and our economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time I was speaking to you was to address the mixed feelings people were having at the removal of COVID restrictions. Now that some time has passed, it has been demonstrated that those restrictions – and our community’s efforts to follow them – were working to keep the virus at bay.

Currently, we are witnessing an increased number of positive cases. The number of patients requiring hospitalization for severe complications of COVID-19 is higher that anytime in the pandemic with a substantial number of patients requiring care in the ICU. Providence has recently reinstated the “no visitation” policy in the hospital as a precaution. We are seeing more break-through cases for vaccinated individuals, but the vaccinations are keeping the virus from becoming life-threatening.

As a way to track the virus concentration in our community, the City has been using a sampling program funded by the Federal Health and Human Services Department to measure wastewater influent for the presence of the COVID-19 virus coming into the Elk River Wastewater Treatment Facility. To be clear, this is not our drinking water. It is the water from the sewer entering the wastewater treatment facility as a way to test the levels of the virus. What we have found is that the virus concentration is higher than 99% of all quantifiable samples collected nationwide in the past six weeks.

This is clearly not over, and it is not getting better. We will see more events get cancelled, from weddings to community fairs. The continued uncertainty will cause businesses to struggle and close. Unvaccinated people will die. Unless we can get more people vaccinated, the virus will continue to have the opportunity to develop new variants.

This does not have to be our path forward. We know how to get this under control: we need everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. Getting a vaccination is easy and it’s free. You can sign up at myturn.ca.gov. Or, you can call (833) 422-4255.

Until that time when we have more people vaccinated, more agencies and businesses are reinstituting masking policies. We do know that both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals should wear masks when indoors.

Effective today, the City of Eureka is reinstituting our mask mandate in City facilities, and our City Council meetings will take place with face masks until they are no longer needed.

The County of Humboldt has also instituted a mask policy for all staff and visitors, so prepare to be masked if you’re entering any public building in Eureka. Many businesses are also reinstituting mask policies for employees and may also include customers in that mandate. Please carry a mask with you when you’re out.

Again, I’m Mayor Susan Seaman, and I appreciate everybody re-committing to taking appropriate safety measures. Please get vaccinated. It’s the single most important thing you can do to help get this virus contained. And, whether you are vaccinated or unvaccinated, continue to practice good habits – wash your hands, wear a mask and try to avoid crowded settings – especially indoors. We’ll talk again soon.

covid virus concentrations in Eureka wastewaterPress release from the City of Eureka:

The City of Eureka has been notified of a higher-than-average concentration of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in wastewater flowing to the City’s wastewater treatment plant. Samples from the plant, which serves the greater Eureka area including Myrtletown, Cutten, and Pine Hill, were collected via the National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS), a federal program designed to help public health officials monitor COVID-19 spread. Out of all samples submitted nationwide in the last six weeks, local wastewater contained concentrations higher than 99% of all samples.

This report coincides with last Friday’s Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services announcement that cited that the county experienced its highest single day case count of confirmed COVID-19 last week and yesterday’s subsequent announcement that more than 90 additional cases were confirmed since last week’s report.

“While this is another useful datapoint that can help our community make more informed decisions to protect themselves from transmission, it is critically important to remember that this is a test of wastewater, not drinking water. At no point has local drinking water been threatened during the pandemic, and it remains safe for consumption,” Brian Gerving, Director of Public Works for the City of Eureka said. “However, knowing that the virus may be spreading locally at levels higher than in other parts of the country is important information that helps public health officials monitor and respond. We are making this information public so that citizens can also take early action and remember to follow all guidance to better protect themselves and their families.”
The City of Eureka has been participating in the federally funded National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) since June. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in collaboration with agencies throughout the federal government, initiated this program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

By testing wastewater for the presence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, health officials are better able to understand and predict community trends related to COVID-19 infection rates. Sewage testing has been used throughout the world to monitor the spread of harmful disease.

“As much as we may want it to be, the COVID-19 pandemic is not over yet,” said Humboldt County Health Officer Ian Hoffman, M.D. “Vaccination is still the best measure to protect yourself and the community from COVID-19. Masking and social distancing is also advised. This new local data including both rising case counts and now the wastewater testing results are cause for concern. Everyone must continue to do their part to protect themselves and each other.”

Citing the increased spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 nationwide, the CDC currently recommends that all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear a mask indoors in public in areas of substantial or high virus transmission. Humboldt County now meets this threshold.
Both Humboldt County administration and the City of Eureka are now requiring everyone who enters county or city facilities to wear a face covering, regardless of vaccination status.

For more information about COVID-19 conditions locally, including where to get vaccinated, visit: https://humboldtgov.org/2927/COVID-Info.

NOTE 8/4: We’ve amended the title to correct an error stating there was universal masking indoors in Eureka. We apologize for our mistake and hope this clears up any confusion.

What was the concentration of opioids in that same wastewater? Just curious but I bet it was much higher than the covid concentration. I would say that the opioid crisis is much more prevalent 🤔🧐

Thank you, better late than never. I only unmasked for a couple of days when the outlook was good, but I could read the writing on the wall and started masking again.
Also, better safe than sorry. Speaking as a 74 year old, healthy, mostly sane and fully vaccinated person ☺

Literally the rudest comment in the history of this blog!

I am amazed that this comment appears here, and categorically state that once, a doctor, in charge of “medical staff” at Jerold Phelps Hospital, told me “you’ll be dead soon”…

As I told him, I will be around to micturate on your grave, sir. This was in 2012.

Me too. 76 and fully vaxed. Enjoyed the no mask break. But I deal with the public and its the least I can do. Local friend ambulanced to St.Joes and on a respirator in a pressurized room. 60 something and thin as a rail. Getting closer to home. With local concerts and festivals back on the calendar this is shaping up to be a real mess. By the way last year Dr. Fauci said that the virus could live in the nose and throat of vaccinated subjects. But whose gonna believe him when got an internet full of Russian trolls spreading disinformation which is being lapped up by the not quite bright conspiracy suckers.

It seems to me we need some clarification on whether having bugs in your nose is “exposed” or “infected” etc. etc.. I do think we need to take this stuff seriously. Since the start of the Pdemic the rich have gotten much richer. They used to justify it by yammering about how they are the ones who create the jobs. In 2021 the only thing they are creating is larger piles of booty. If this virus keeps keeping on, realistically, how far are you from homeless? Another interesting angle is that banks are positioning themselves to buy up the foreclosed homes when the foreclosure protection goes away. As speculator or landlord it makes financial sense. I think it is interesting that they are having real trouble getting folks to come back and work for service sector wages.

this. the problem isn’t so much “those people” or “those other people.” it’s the rich, that have interfered with the implementation of effective supports that would allow effective lockdown protocols, because they would rather people die by the thousands than their stock value drop. they disseminated misinformation, playing on people’s justified insecurities about the lack of supports. then they played up the division, turned us against each other.

then a bunch of ignorant jerks decided to double down on antivax/antimask nonsense, putting more people at risk, after the situation changed and the data necessary to have a basic understanding of things was so widely available that you would have to make an effort to avoid it.

the rich are the real problem, tho. pelosi, bezos, trump, the kochs, etc.

I’ve worked for the government for a long time. The classic government playbook basically boils down to:
– identify problem.
– hold 117 meetings to discuss problem.
– come up with plan to combat problem.
– plan failed? 117 more meetings!
– new plan is always same as old plan that just failed but scaled up to cost more, then everyone is baffled when the new plan didn’t succeed.

That’s management. And politicians. What happen on the ground is that 80% of employees complain but don’t do anything, 15% of employees sabotage any change and 5% of employees get out their duct tape, go the problem, fix it as best they can and quietly go home.

Imagine in 2021 having all the information at your fingertips, and someone comes here to LOL a dissenting view, without actually doing the research. Quick Google search shows that the CDC is, gasp, now stating that the vaccinated do spread COVID-19 and infecting others with their vaccine spike proteins. USDA regulations state to not vaccinate flocks during a pandemic because it causes evolutionary adaption and resistance; but somehow humans are different.

Double LOL to you .. lolololol.

So here’s the thing: “spike proteins” are a common feature to all variants of SARS-COV-2, and the instructions embedded in the mRNA vaccine is not for a whole virus but just the spike protein sequenced from the original strain. This causes your body to make enough of these fragments to train the immune system what to look for. Same for the adenovirus versions, just a little different mechanism that’s DNA based instead.

Neither of these vaccines cause your body to produce whole virus of any kind. Its also not possible for a real SARS-COV-2 virus to come along and adopt features from the vaccine mRNA.

I dunno what you’ve been reading ..

Most scientists I know are genuinely trying to do the right thing. In the case of the Wuhan lab they were trying to get ahead of the next MERS or SARS outbreak by studying the viruses that are related to those. Do some of them fuck up? Are some less careful than others? Do some try to hide mistakes rather than own up to them? Of course, they are people just like anyone else. But most of them, and the process of science as a whole, isn’t to blame.

We can either ignore the potential viruses and be caught off-guard when they show up or we can study them and run the risk of an accidental release. Most labs studying virus have stringent safety protocols in place to minimize the risk of release but the weak point is the humans doing the research.

None of the above exonerates people who purposefully try to weaponize viruses to kill, those folks are assholes.

Except the lab in question and the specific program wasn’t studying natural viruses that already occur in nature. They were manipulating viruses only susceptible to animals to become susceptible to humans, via gain-of-function research.

So Rand Paul reads Fausti’s own definition of “gain of function research”, which perfectly matches with what was going on in the Wuhan lab, and that is a “takedown” of Rand Paul? Is that something akin to freedom is slavery, war is peace, ignorance is strength?

Perhaps instead of Googling “Rand Paul takes down Faucci” and coming up with literally the opposite result, you should just watch the video.

I guess I see it as being a bit problematic assigning blame to an entire group of people when there is no clear resolution about how it started. Particularly when it results in rhetoric and attacks on people of Chinese ancestry who had nothing to do with the origins of the pandemic.

It sucks that we don’t have a clear understanding of how this virus originated because it would help us figure out how to prepare for future outbreaks. A good part of that lack of resolution is due to the government of China being opaque but some of it is just the nature of virus origins and mutations.

You have a problem blaming the exact people responsible for the pandemic and the cover up? Bullshit. All the evidence pointed to it the whole time, all powers that be tried to bury it, the people wouldn’t let it die. Yesterday virtually all the liberal media in the us ignored the GOP report pointing to just SOME of the evidence. .you keep saying “Chinese” it was American and Chinese scientists, hell the French help build the fucking lab and warned us about China pulling some shady crap 6 years ago. It’s the scientific community that unintentionally caused this and lied about it the whole time. Dont pull the whole garbage about xenophobic, everyone is tired of listening to woke people over actually facts. Hmmm. I assumed that Trump moved because of the investigations and because his fellow native New Yorkers hated his guts and that hurt his feels. And the Florida GOP was nice to him. As far as I can tell, he’s staying in NJ at one of his country clubs for the summer because it’s…well…summer in Florida. And maybe because Mar-a-Lago, per an an agreement when he bought the place and wanted to turn it into a club he had to agree to not live there permanently. So he’s had to stay somewhere else for awhile because the PTB were making noises about that down there. He’s not living in his Tower as far as I can tell.

I don’t think he pulled the CDC out of China for a nefarious reason like being behind the Covid bug. It was just his usual stupid and weird idea of “America first” that then cut off our nose to spite our face.

He will also be prioritised and receive top level care in the unlikely event he has another problem, any other problem.

He is lucky that way.

There was no vaccine back then.

He could have been forewarned.

He would have been forewarned.

Remember
Covfefe.

Makes me wonder.

He said there were those who understood it.

Who were they?

Once again the ignorance and idiocy exhibited by a human being is absolutely unbelievable. Trump never told the truth in his life. It is people like you that are destroying this country because you have the brains and discernment of a rusty hood ornament.

I’m saying we do not yet have clear evidence about the virus origin and we may never have that evidence because the Chinese government isn’t allowing access to the lab to clarify it. Analysis of the virus does not show clear evidence that it was modified by humans — which doesn’t mean it didn’t mutate naturally under the lab conditions just that it lacks the structure commonly found in manipulated viruses. It could also have evolved naturally in wild populations that were then able to spread to humans. There is ample evidence that this virus can jump easily between animals and humans and back again with the potential to pick up mutations every time it does.

And skip the Nazi analogy , that’s some weak sauce in this context.

“I’m saying we do not yet have clear evidence about the virus origin”

Unless you’ve been living in a cave (or watching Rachel Maddow), it’s origins are pretty clear now.

Next sentence: “the Chinese government isn’t allowing access to the lab to clarify it”

When you read your first sentence next to your second sentence, do you scratch your head….just a little maybe?

“It could also have evolved naturally in wild populations”

You “could” win the lottery tomorrow.

“Particularly when it results in rhetoric and attacks on people of Chinese ancestry”

Yawn. So there’s evidence of this????, but no evidence that Covid was created in a lab in Wuhan??? Uh huh.

rollin, if you’re going to nitpick at least make the effort to get it right.

I don’t find it particularly surprising that you think it’s really clear where the virus originated from but don’t seem to be aware of the rising violence and rhetoric against people of Asian descent. It’s almost as if you only watch Tucker Carlson and read far-right blogs.

My Boomer neighbors did cause this. They elected all the politicians local to federal from Regan to now that wage war continuously, gambled on housing, supported globalism for cheap crap from China which made them powerful, demanded suburban growth with wage slave service economy big box stores like Walmart so they can consume China plastic crap, and shut the economy down twice for the greatest bailouts for the rich ever transferring wealth up while impoverishing generations. Then they don’t retire, don’t get out of politics, and continue to act like it’s the 90s while gaslighting younger generations about bootstraps, passions, and take experimental gene therapy so grandma can live longer than she should.

That’s loony. We have gotten info promoting public health throughout the pandemic. Meanwhile antivaxers promote fear.

What control? To whose specific benefit? Was this all planned by the CCP and mask manufactures?

Dr. Nichols is a chiropractor. Now I like my chiropractor, he’s very good with my blown out L5/L6 (yes, you read that right).

However I don’t go to my chiropractor when I have a virus.

Dr. Nichols is all about the human potential, whatever that is. It sounds nice. His clinic is a Chiropractic and Natural Health Center.

“I am on a mission to help people become the best version of themselves via chiropractic!”

Funny, theres even more on here trying, -and failing miserably, to defend their ignorance and selfishness, by claiming they know more, somehow, than the rest of us, including the medical and scientific communities.

If its all fake to you, why dont you just ignore it? Why are you so threatened by OTHER people wearing a simple mask? Yet, here you are again.

We don’t have to listen to antivax nutjobs who live in constant fear of crazy conspiracies.

We can take reasonable precautions backed by scientific evidence instead of being motive by fear like they are.

You antivaxers sound scared as hell. Every thread it’s the same fear based bullshit . Scared of masks, scared of vaccines, scared of your own shadows. Coming here saying the other guys are fearful is just a hoot.
You live in fear.

Humor was not the intent.

The first comment is actually two statements (of a very simple sort). The second comment is also a statement. (A statement is a declarative phrase or sentence.)

Since there are no “gene modified vaxxers”, you are in essence saying your acquired natural immunity is better than nothing. Which is certainly true.

The only thing this incompetent “mayor” should be saying is, “I’m mayor Susan Seaman and I realize myself, along with the city council and all the city managers have failed at everything we’ve done. We appreciate you all contributing to pay our salaries. We have no plans. We have no solutions. You are all on your own. Once again, I’m mayor Susan Seaman and thank you for my unearned salary.”

Just to set the tone: I believe we’re all God’s creations, with the potential to be masterpieces!

A person by the name Patrick King recently won a major court case in Alberta Canada, by getting the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH)- Deena Hinshaw to state for the record that, “there is no material evidence to prove that SARS-COV 2 virus exist”. The narrative is dead. The virus has never been isolated. This means that governments around the world will finally have to now show proof It DOES NOT EXIST! That means the CMOH would have to have the proof and the science in order to write the Public Health Act for the covid pandemic. They messed up. You cannot prove its existence therefore you cannot force me to do anything in the name of something that is non-existent. NO VACCINE. NO VACCINE. NO VACCINE. No mask. No social distance. No limiting gathering sizes. Kids return to school. Everybody is hugging again. My small business can reopen now. END…
