Dog Rescued With Help of Good Samaritans and CHP Officer

Scamp in berry bushes

Aww! What a sweet story sent to us by Terry Spreiter.

I would like to publicly commend and deeply thank Officer Brian McCarville of the Arcata Humboldt Area CHP for his help in safely and successfully rescuing the dog Scamp from a black berry thicket on the shoulder of US Highway 101 near Clam Beach on the evening of July 29, 2021. The dog had been seen searching for his lost owners for several miles up and down the highway, near Clam Beach and in Dows Prairie.
Numerous other citizens had helped in the rescue, trying to keep Scamp off the freeway, but Scamp was determined to find home, and ended up on the busy freeway.  A motorist had stopped and managed to get him off the pavement, into a patch of dense brush where he hunkered down, and I also stopped to help.
When Officer Brian McCarville arrived, he cautioned us extensively about safety, and the hazards and risks of attempting to coax the dog out.  I offered to crawl down into the thorny thicket and see if I could get the officer’s leash on the dog, if he could stand by while I tried.  A second and third officer stopped to assist.  After a brief conference, I was allowed to try, and Officer McCarville stood guard to warn motorists of the hazard and haze the dog back in the bushes if he tried to bolt.
With time, patience, dog food from the other motorist, and water and support from Officer McCarville, we were eventually, collectively able to coax and escort Scamp out of the thicket, and into the luxury of the patrol vehicle.
Scamp was clearly very grateful and cooperative, once he realized we were trying to help him. Thank goodness he had tags on his collar. He has been joyfully reunited with his owners this morning after a night at the local dog resort, aka the McKinleyville Sheriff’s Animal Shelter.
Without the help, patience, resourcefulness and caring of Officer Brian McCarville, Scamp would likely be dead.  Thanks to his willingness to help a scared lost dog, a serious accident on the freeway was avoided.
THANK YOU, OFFICER BRIAN MCCARVILLE!
And thank you to all the other kind people who helped along the way to make a happy ending to Scamp’s day. May he, and Officer Brian, live long healthy lives and continue to bring love and joy to their respective human companions.

But I don’t understand why Scamp’s family were not there looking for him? I would never take my dog to the beach and leave without him–not in decades and decades of dog ownership! And yes! THANK YOU to everyone that pitched in to save this poor animal!

Yeah, a bit weird that the family was not driving and walking around the area where Scamp was lost and not, apparently, in contact with LEOs and news outfits and such. A bit sketchy.

I’ve known multiple dogs that were killed on that stretch of highway. Scared off the beach by fireworks, got lost, wandered up from the beach were the ways they met a nasty fate. THANK YOU for this story! THANK YOU ALL for saving this scared dog.

Those collar tags are essential. I’m always dismayed when a missing dog is described as having no tags. In addition, you can also get your dog microchipped at Sequoia Humane Society for $25, about half what a private vet would charge. Check their website or call them if you’re interested.
