Late yesterday, a fire, probably caused by lightning that came through on July 28, grew big enough to be seen in the area just before 7 p.m. south of Wildwood in Trinity County. The fire, according to heat maps, appears to be burning in both Trinity and Shasta Counties.

This morning the US Forest Service reports that the fire (now called the McFarland Fire) grew to around 40 to 50 acres. “It is currently 3% contained,” they report on InciWeb. “Ground and air resources are on scene, with more on order for today.”

UPDATE 10:43 a.m.: The Shasta Trinity National Forest is reporting as of 8:50 a.m., “#McFarlandFire now reported at estimated at 100 acres with a rapid rate of spread. No closures or evacuations are currently associated with this fire.”

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Department just issued an Evacuation Warning. They state,

Areas impacted: SR 36, Wildwood, and the south end of DeerLick Springs Road near SR 36.

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office is issuing an Evacuation Warning to the residents of Wildwood, and the south end of Deer Lick Springs Road, ob both sides of SR 36 due to a wildfire on McFarlin Ridge.

Area residents and visitors in the above listed areas if elderly, have medical issues, small children, or livestock and pets, need to be prepared to leave the area in case of increased fire activity.

This is an Evacuation Warning at this time.

Please note:

  • An Evacuation Order means you should leave now and the area is closed to the public.
  • An Evacuation Warning means the residents of the area should prepare to leave if ordered to do so.

Just what we don’t need is another fire. I sure hope they will get this fire out soon, but at only 3% contained it will probably grow larger. Thank you firefighters and please stay safe.

Lightening strikes can smolder in trees and roots for weeks and then suddenly ignite.

I watched the fire cams one day and they sent a truck to a smoldering tree from lightning strikes three days before the thing put off enough smoke to garner attention. Perhaps they went back on the fire cams and zoomed in once they new the area they were looking for and sall a small presence of smoke?
Those cameras have some real nice wildlife show up: so far i have seen golden eagles, california condors, and of course turkey vultures. the airplane apps shows how proactive they are deploying aircraft this year. I should note i see lots of navy and air force aircraft involved in fighting this years fires alongside the forest service, cal fire, and a whole bunch of subcontracted fire crews. I have also noticed a heavy presence of military aircraft patrolling offshore and up and down the coast this year. Be safe, look out for one another, particularly those risking their lives to protect others.

If they still staffed the lookouts maybe it would have been turned in sooner. No more eyes in the sky.
