Two Correctional Deputies Injured in Jail Assault, Says HCSO

This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Keith Tamas Vroman-Nagy

Keith Tamas Vroman-Nagy

Two correctional deputies were injured today during an assault inside the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.

On July 27, 2021, just before 10 a.m., two correctional deputies inside a housing unit were attempting to escort a disruptive inmate to a secure holding location when the inmate became combative. While refusing to comply with deputy requests, the inmate, 29-year-old Keith Tamas Vroman-Nagy, produced a sharpened pencil hidden on his person and attacked the deputies. During the assault, one deputy sustained minor injuries, while the other sustained serious injuries as a result of being stabbed just above the eye.

Both correctional deputies were transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. One was treated and released, while the other is being transported to an out of area hospital for specialized treatment. The deputy is in stable condition and is expected to survive the injury.

Vroman-Nagy was booked on additional charges of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)), assault with a deadly weapon upon a custodial officer (PC 245.3) battery with injury on a custodial officer (PC 243(c)(1)), battery on a peace officer (PC 243(c)(2)), battery with serious bodily injury (PC 243(d)), causing great bodily injury in commission of a felony (PC 12022.7) and resisting an executive officer (PC 69).

In 2020, the Humboldt County Correctional Facility recorded 33 assaults on staff members. Today’s attack is the 18th assault on staff this year.

“I am thankful that our brave Correctional Deputies will recover from their injuries. It is a miracle that our deputy did not lose his eye from this assault,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said. “Our correctional deputies have a very difficult job and face challenges daily. Many of those challenges have been exacerbated by the regulations imposed on us through AB 109 Prison Realignment. Despite these challenges, our deputies continue to serve our community with unwavering resolve and compassion for those on the journey of rehabilitation.”

The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to creating a safe environment for both correctional staff and inmates within our Correctional Facility, and this incident remains under investigation.

Here’s a link:

This is (allegedly) one of Arcata’s many stabby folks.

Got a friendly look to him though.

Jeez nothing said about the inmate did they kill him probably beat the shit out of him guaranteed. They Murdered my son Raymond while he was being released and they do whatever to the inmates as well so somebody caught back and look at what they are going to do to him for it probably get life. The Correctional Officers are so corrupt and that’s ok because they cover for each other

Why does Humboldt Correctional Facility play around with these inmates? Their deputies even walk around and have to hang out with these psychos the whole day. They need to develop what every other jail has and stay away or someone is going to get killed.

Because any reasonable person doesn’t give a f@&# about someone who would attack someone else with a sharpened pencil for doing their job of protecting the rest of us. I’m sorry to hear of your loss, but at the same time I don’t believe your son was likely the innocent victim you would like to remember him to be. Society is tired of criminals who would make victims of those who would be made criminals for simply defending themselves from such scum!

I’m sorry your son got killed. This inmate has stabbed several innocent people just because and I’m going on a limb here he’s off his psych meds. Being off meds should no longer excuse this behavior innocent people do not deserve to die. Enough is enough and unfortunately if he is bruised he brought it in himself he attacked two officers of the law and was not cooperating – what do you suggest the officers do stand there and take it while being brought out in body bag?
The officers are ensuring others safety maybe even yours.

I met a gal fresh outta HCJ whose most horrific memory of her stay was when she got shanked in the neck with a spork. “A f##### SPORK” she says with a grin and a laugh. In her dreams the spork became a shiny stiletto.

a good deal of correctional workers need help. Mental health help. They play sadistic games with peoples lives and when the dayis over they punch out and head back tot heir families while the people they treat like animals are left to rot. Not saying thius gent is a saint but the correctional employees I know are twisted. Shit one jail psychologist I was exposed to was performing for the inmates in ways only a stripper should be. Its a dirty world over at the blue light motel.

So does anybody want this guy out walking around their neighborhood? “Hey get off my lawn!” And he stabs you with a pencil because he’s sensitive and doesn’t like to be told what to do!

Out in public, this thug would have access to more than a pencil…it just may be that he is where he belongs.

Vroman isn’t a terribly common name. A number of years ago, we had a judge in Mendo named Vroman. I wonder if this person is a (distant) relative.

I hope the CO recovers fully.

Even though this happened and two officers were injured, “The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to creating a safe environment for both correctional staff and inmates within our Correctional Facility…”

Why bother issuing such a ridiculous statement when it’s demonstrably untrue?

I don’t know whether I should he’s got a problem or he is a problem! Both really. He’s got a history… Here’s another one he did in 2018 in Southern California.

He was release without any plan of care, or sentencing. He was just dumped on the street after he was held for awhile.
We have an extremely ill person, in an extremely broken system.

We have a system where mentally ill people have a right by law to not take medication, be confined or otherwise follow treatment.

Unfortunately, the Mentally Ill can be mandated to take medication once they have committed serious crimes, and are incarcerated.
Also, unfortunately those in charge at the jail failed to give the correct medication, even though they were told by the family that what was chosen does not work well for this person.

Humboldt County has taken the opportunity to enact Laura’s Law, which would set up monitored medication, and treatment, instead of jail time for those who are severely mentally ill.
Also, unfortunately the severely mentally ill should not be in jail/prison; but in mental hospitals, of which there are few, because instead of reforming what we had in California, we mistakenly voted to eliminate the cost of running them, and closed many down in 1973.
Now the severely mentally ill live with family, on the street, or in jail/prison.

This man is severely mentally ill.
Not a thug, but a person with a chemically imbalanced brain who comes from a loving stable home.
This is a tragedy for everyone involved. His family is just devastated, as they were with the previous psychotic breaks where others were injured.
Instead of the judicial system keeping him in jail (albeit on the floor for the mentally ill), hoping to ‘restore competency’ so he can go to trial; he should have be transferred to a Mental Hospital where he may have received proper care, and medication by trained professionals who could better treat this extremely sick person.

I rarely read the comments here, because so often it’s just a free-for-all of nasty comments, usually with scant, or no fact to back them up.

Except no one can legally hold a person for mental health reasons who is not an immediate danger to themselves or others. Which is no guarantee that he won’t be one day later. The family might have been devastated but they have always blamed others for not doing what they couldn’t do themselves while objecting to most of what could be done as not good enough.

Unfortunately there are very few to no facilities for the violent and dangerous mentally ill. Even for those from “more stable” (middle class? and so, “better”?) families. So, in lieu of any other solution, he belongs in prison. In the 60’s he may have been given a frontal lobotomy or shock therapy to the point of brain damage. Is that better?

What is important is keeping him and his behavior from hurting other people. What is important is stopping his random stabbing habit from effecting other people. From killing other people. Sorry, I know this hurts but mental illness, family feelings or status is not a reason to give anyone slack for that dangerous behavior. No one cares if he is on street drugs or if he is just on the natch. One would assume anyone with that random behavior pattern, sober or not, would indeed have some sort of severe mental illness and not much self control. That would be a given. At this point it is not about him anymore. It’s about protecting the general public.

Thank you Simone Whipple for showing a little decency and truth to this absolute horrible nightmare EVERYONE in his family is living a worst nightmare. Imagine , for a minute if you spent all of your waking , living hours , resources , finances to help your son. Have any of you cheap seats in the back met him? No? I have, and it is horrifically sad how unable he is able to reach reality. THAT IS NOT HIS FALT – He struggles with reality based on his physiological condition. It is so clear to see he is struggling in all ways to cope. Why is he not on a medical unit? This is not some “scum bag”. His actions are based on a real illness called paranoid Schizophrenia . Please , you wouldn’t gloat on someones demented grandpa lashing out with violence- If you have ever known people who suffer from debilitating mental illness- you wouldn’t gloat over a family in crisis.

Again. The law is such that his rights to freedom are more valued than his or other’s safety. And those, for people in a serious mental unreality, those are more often that not incomparable demands.

4 different stabbing events including the two on the deputies as one, and this guy is still allowed to be out in the general public!! This is exactly why we have crime levels that are not acceptable.
