[UPDATE 9 p.m.: Major Injury] Crash on Hwy 299; Vehicle Originally Reported to Be Smoking and Occupant Trapped

Traffic collision, crash, wreck, feature iconA vehicle reportedly rolled over just west of Lord Ellis Summit about 6:10 p.m. According the dispatcher, people at the crash scene were initially telling her that the occupant was injured and smoke was coming from the vehicle. They were struggling to free the crash victim.

However, by 6:16 p.m., dispatch is reporting that the patient is out of the vehicle, though it is continuing to smoke. The vehicle is now said to be on its wheels though it is unclear if it never rolled over or if it rolled completely over.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

UPDATE 6:21 p.m.: The vehicle is now reported to be on fire but a witness reported that a private water tender is on scene and trying to help.

UPDATE 6:24 p.m.: The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page is once again stating that the car is only smoking.

UPDATE 9 p.m.: The CHP report that this is a major injury accident.

You start getting phone service about where she wrecked. I’m glad someone was able to call for help. The road through there is in perfect condition so that wasn’t the problem.

It wasn’t stated it was a girl who wrecked. It say the dispatch was a female. And who ever called was telling”her” what was going on.

It’s near perfect. I never post here been here almost a decade. There is one or two spots either before or after Chezam where it’s a knot and kind of jolts your vehicle to the left or right. If these imperfections were not on turns it wouldn’t be nearly as scary. I’m not saying this is the cause of the accident but it always have bothered me why the material hasn’t been smoothed down a little closer to an even grade.

The article stated the accident was west of Lord Ellis Summit. Chezam Road is east of it. but you are corrected about the need for the highway to be smoothed out.

My husband worked with Caltrans before he started driving truck and he said that patch of road is subject to subsidence and slipping due to erosion. It’s like Last Chance Grade… no matter how often they fix it, the road will slip. The only cure is to reroute the entire stretch.

‘Effective’ speed limit on 299 is now about 65 to 70mph (was 55).
‘Effective’ 101 is now 75 to 85 mph (was 65).

One of the reasons why the fatalities/capsized/off the road wrecked cars are now common.
