A Quick Summary of Southern Humboldt’s Town Hall on Monday

KMUD’s video of the townhall held Monday in Redway.

Monday, July 19, Supervisor Michelle Bushnell and other members of the local government held a town hall in Redway School’s gymnasium.

“The town hall focused on the houseless community in our area and the recent fires in Redway that are believed to be associated with the camps,” said KMUD’s Lauren Schmitt in a summary of the event below.

“Some highlights of the town hall included the DHHS announcing that there are approximately 240 houseless members of our community based on the last census count,” Schmitt says. She added that “Sheriff Honsal has now changed his mind and supports free legal camping for the houseless community at a designated site which would subsequently allow for stricter enforcement on others who choose not to use it. Due to the lack of a designated site, it is illegal for the Sheriff’s Office to enforce removing campsites from state parks land or even the RV from the side of Redwood Drive.”

Schmitt said that the group, Southern Humboldt Housing Opportunities, announced that they have secured a property for safe camping near Garberville but did not release further details.

Below Schmitt talks to members of the community about their take away from the town hall.

She interviewed Humboldt County Sheriff’s Lt. Jesse Taylor who urged community members to make calls requesting assistance. He explained,

Making those calls is critical. We’re a data driven agency. I drove through town about an hour before the meeting. I saw 12 or 15 calls for service that never even reached my computer in my car. So I think people are a little bit conditioned and a little bit just used to the way things are but, without those calls for service, in a way it appears it is not even happening. So I would encourage the community to keep calling but don’t expect an immediate response all the time….I think you would be surprised on how we can reallocate resources once we have that data in place.”

I hope they enforce basic rules for camp edicate. Keep trash and personal belongings tidy so the campsite doesn’t turn into a dump and rat-infested. It would be nice to have a good place to stay if you have nowhere to go.

It’s almost certain to be a total shitshow.

Whoever gets the bid to supply the heroin and meth is going to rake it in.

What is the authority that allows this to happen?

The authority is precisely…the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (Martin v. Boise) interpreting the 8th Amendment.

Was this town hall publicized ahead of time?

Not really. On Facebook as if that’s something everyone goes to. As if that’s an official site to announce anything, especially an important service announcement🤦

Even setting up safe designated outdoor camp kitchens would help contain things.

Yes, he explained that he has given the issue more thought after dealing directly with the issue and changed his thinking based on his experience. It was one of the most refreshing and mature things I have ever heard a public official say.

Isn’t this the same sheriff that said we shouldn’t expect help and should deal with problems ourselves?

Billy Honsal makes $300,000 in salary and benefits, and this is his best effort?

Michelle Bushnell and the rest of the pot farmers that run Humboldt County are advised to do something for THEIR $100,000 salaries, besides rubber stamp more and more giant grows…

Moving the homeless to a central location, ensuring they have food, water, safe camping sites, healthcare and mental health services, will focus the problem but it may ultimately bankrupt Humboldt… And don’t expect the arsonists to stop striking matches…

I am one of the people calling for this service the loudest, and it takes balls to try to implement it, even while the Sheriff is scrambling backwards from it…

Billy can’t do anything on his own, especially endorse the spending of funds by the county for an unpopular program.

It is well that the folks in SoHum are trying this out, it is a bold experiment and we sincerely hope it does some good.

Good comment, VMG.

I like it. It all about improvements.

I just think that the last people that want to live right next to all the homeless, are all the homeless.

It will take more, especially if people want to ALSO keep working people in the area. Lots of people working full time are homeless- they are just much lower key and people don’t notice them. Allowing a few more trailer parks or the county building more and charging lower rents would take a little bit of pressure off all of this. There is very little low income or very low income housing. Trailer and mobile home parks require far less initial investment per unit if NIMBYism is put in it’s place. Call them “tiny home communities” if it makes you feel better. That’s exactly what they were called in the 40’s and early 50’s.. “tiny home communities”. Much more practical in a rural area than multimillion $$ low income housing developments. Much better bang for the public buck, and can even pay for itself with low rents.

Just got back from coastal Mendocino where housing prices have risen even higher than here. Old timers being pushed out, long time local businesses loosing leases to new corporate real estate buyers. People are having a very hard time hiring not only because of the stimulus, but also because it is almost impossible for someone on a store clerk or waitress’s wages to afford to live there. We are not far behind.

Hope no homeless people get killed.
My friend was killed 8/9/03. 18 years ago next month. You’d think that somebody that makes $300,000 a year could get this solved.
Never solved. Humboldt S.O. says its a Mendocino case. Mendocino says it’s a
Humboldt case; but Both have case #’s on it. Reward is now
$400,000. Help solve and buy a nice house for yourself. He was killed @
8500 Simmerly rd Spyrock. Body never
Found. Everybody knows who did it.
Can’t prove it YET! Help us bring
Chris Giauque home. Witness called
From 615) 393-1919 Know him?
