Smoke rising from the shore of Clear Lake from the Buckingham Peak Alert WildFire Cam.

At approximately 1:25 p.m., a fire started near Lucerne on the shores of Clear Lake not far from Hwy 20 and quickly grew to an estimated two acres.

Deputies are doing evacuations in the area, according to the scanner. Also, according to the scanner, the fire was likely an arson fire and there was a foot pursuit of a suspect.

At least two tankers and an air attack are providing air support to the firefighters on the ground.

As of 2:10 p.m., the fire is not advancing quickly, but the Incident Commander warned of “erratic winds.” There have been spots over Lakeshore Boulevard and the fire was moving in the direction of Hwy 20.

UPDATE 2:28 p.m.: Both tankers and the air attack have been released from the Lakeshore Incident as the fire is called. There are no new starts and firefighters are mopping up, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

UPDATE 2:48 p.m.: Evacuation orders have been lifted.

Speaking of fire danger, is anyone aware that trout creek campground in potter valley (20500 eel river rd.) is allowing campers to have their own fires in fire pits at campsites! This campground is not open air but nested under tree canopies.. not to mention there is a long windy dirt road to take to get to the one way in one way out camp site. We only found this out because we launched our canoe on the eel river yesterday and saw over 10 campfires being lit in the forest by campers, we immediately ran to the camp host and she really did not even seem to understand why we are frightened that novice campers that could potentially be drunk are lighting campfires!!! I am shocked that this is going on. One wrong move and a big pottery valley could happen because of this campground

Call and report it to Cal Fire Law Enforcement. They will send someone out.

Trout Creek campground is a USFS camp. FRA Federal Responsibility Area

It’s not in a SRA, State Resp. Area, Calfire’s jurisdiction.

It is the camp hosts responsibility to verify if campers have a State Campfire Permit.
The free Permit allows them to have a campfire in an Established Fire Ring in an Established Campsite or to use a portable stove. But they must follow the rules.
Also must have one to have a campfire on another’s private property.

Obtained at BLM, USFS, & Local fire depts

On the campfire permit quiz is states

True or False: A safe site for a campfire is an area level, open, and away from trees, brush or dead vegetation.

The answer is true.

Trout creek campground is full of vegetation, and located under tree canopies.

Do you still think it’s safe for people to be able to take a 8 question quiz and be able to burn, in an area that is not even deemed “safe” to the quiz?

1st off, thankfully this Incident wasn’t a 1yr to forever nightmare with near endless trauma/ptsd, disturbance, costs, claims, & liabilities for dozens or thousands of citizens.

I didn’t advocate 1 way or the other what ” I thought” about thr campfire rules.

Was just stating the facts ma’am.

Tho, I do think many locals are “concerned” about any potential ignition source not everyone is “worried” about the less likely sources.

For PValley to burn from Trout Creek would need E and/or NE winds.

Same rules have been in effect for many yrs.
Though permited campfires have gotten away to varying levels of damage, OUR main fire problems have not originated from camps like Trout Creek.
Mostly have been Arsonist fire bugs (which this article is about not campfire fears), negligent idiot citizens/businesses at home/work or in cars, PGE line problems, bad private property wiring, & lightning, often any or all sources with higher winds.

What “I think” is that IF the campfire permit rules ended up producing fire events & Evidence of a Higher than average Incidence of wildland fires started at developed camp sites and fire rings that got loose in our area that we would have a tighter reign in on the fed, state, & local limits for campfire permits stated in the Yearly fire restrictions posted by each fire district/Marshall with responsibility over said area.

https://recreation.pge.com/mbl/camping/

This shows the fire permit limits at Trout Creek based on daily fire danger forecasts.

I was wrong about 1 thing. Trout Creek CG is not USFS. May be BLM or Army Corps admin’d by PGE as part of PVP.
Likely Federal RA but maybe SRA.
I couldn’t get the Ukiah BLM office to verify if it was theirs, only that they don’t have any ongoing management activities there. USFS Upper Lake was clear they think it’s BLM.

It may be worth following up with the PGE Recreation office to ensure that the camp host is actually verifying that campers do in fact have a permit and were thus presented with the permit limits & rules when they signed it under penalty of perjury.

Go for it.

I sure hope they caught the damn fire bug. Do they also have the female? There hopefully will be a special place in hell for these people. The fire could have got completely out of control and burned some homes, injuring or killing folks, but I am very relieved it do not. When they light fires near homes, it is too bad they cannot be arrested and put in prison for attempted murder!

No Nixle on this evac in the Oaks…

Many more scummy homeless, hiding in the bushes, than usual, this year, even out on Soda Bay Road…

Lots of residents have fled the heat, and many have fled the incredible odor from the algae…

Lake County is toasty dry, and I hope you have your Go-Bag packed…
