Several Anti LGBTQ Acts in Humboldt County Have Sparked Two Colorful Responses–One Yesterday in Arcata and One Today in Ferndale

About a dozen people came out to fight hate on the corner of H and 18th Streets in Arcata on Friday after posts on Nextdoor and social media told of a Pride Flag that was displayed in a garden on the same corner had been burned.

Recently, several anti-LGBTQ acts have infuriated some residents of Humboldt County. On May 28, someone erected a wooden cross scrawled with the biblical verse, Leviticus 20:13, on the property of two women who had a Pride Flag displayed in the Kneeland area.  The Bible verse posted advocates death for the gay community, saying, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

Then, after a Pride Flag was raised at the corner of 18th and H Street in Arcata, someone attempted to burn and cut the flag.

And more recently, to the consternation of many online, a church in Ferndale, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, posted a sign offering healing for those who have been “hurt by LGBTQ culture”.

Yesterday, a small gathering at the site of the Pride Flag burning in Arcata and a march beginning at noon today in Ferndale in front of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church were organized to promote solidarity and push back against acts of hate. According to the woman who planted the Pride Flag at 18th and H in Arcata after,  “The purpose [of the gathering] is solidarity after the rainbow flag was taken down and destroyed by cutting and burning it. Ironically that flag was placed there in solidarity for [the] act of hate up in the Kneeland area.”

Below are photos from yesterday’s gathering.

Later, we hope to cover today’s march in Ferndale.

Let’s just say what has to be said.

SEXUAL Preferences Should Not Be The measure of a human being.

Some of the most artistic, creative people I know are gay, and beautiful. There’s a few straight ones too.

Let the deeds of human being be what you see in a person’s value, gay or straight or …..

There are some sick people in this world who prey upon the weak and helpless.

They need to be dealt with accordingly, regardless of preference.

I really hope “HSU grad” is not someone who actually graduated from HSU.

I’m 64 years old. When I was 12, gay people at a Greenwich Village bar finally stood up to the police violence and abuse they had previously tolerated, and the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement took flight. When I was 21, a California politician tried to ban LGBT people from teaching in schools. Around the same time, Harvey Milk, an elected gay Supervisor in San Francisco was assassinated, and a bunch of bigots formed a hate group that they called, apparently without irony, the Moral Majority.

Shortly thereafter, the United States government was led by a man who completely ignored a pandemic — the more things change…

It wasn’t until I was over 50 years old that same-sex marriage became legal; as someone who is married, I’m grateful to everyone who fought for so long to make this most basic civil right possible, but I’m well aware that there are still many people in this country who resent being faced with the reality that gay people exist, that we are present in all walks of life, and that we are entitled to exactly the same rights as everyone else.

Gay people self-identify by our sexual proclivities (among many other ways, of course) because for too long, others have wanted to pretend we don’t exist, and bullied everyone they thought might be gay. It still happens today, as anyone who has attended or graduated from a high school should know. And there are still countries whose leaders are so afraid of gay people that they pretend no gay people exist in their countries.

But, most likely, you already know all this. So what you’re really doing is trying to force silence on people you are prejudiced against, and then resenting the fact that they intend to be full citizens, just like you. That’s a problem, but it is your problem; no one else’s.

I’m always a little suspect of situations like the cross planting that occur dead of night, no witnesses, no video surveillance, no other vandalism. I’m not saying those people are trying to play victim… but I’m not saying they’re not. Recall that black guy from ‘Empire’ who set up a fake hate crime against himself… there’s a lot of reasons someone might find it useful to be a victim… domestic strife, trouble at work, landlord issues, need for attention…

Beyond that, honestly, I’m worn out with protests and the accompanying bullshit. It’s just tiring. You aren’t “stopping hate ” by waving signs. You’re giving the perpetrators (if there be perpetrators) what they want. The way to beat those idiots is by quietly replacing your burnt flag and not even acknowledging the deed.

Ah, yes, Leviticus. A man lying with another man (no mention of women) is indeed a cardinal sin of the same magnitude as extramarital sex, seeing your dad naked, wearing clothes of two different fibers, eating shellfish or shaving your beard wrong.

I hope for their sake that the old testament scholors responsible for this action are living carefully.

He also said Love Thy Neighbor, and he pretty much conveyed that humans aren’t in charge of defining, judging, or punishing sin. Because some people think that hoarding wealth, allowing people to starve, or bombing them are sins. You might not want to face that judgment.

Yes he is reported to have said “love thy neighbor”. Although this is a latter addition to the book of John which many say should not be considered cannon. This also possibly explains some of the many contradictory quotes attributed to jesus.

Let’s be honest, the book is poorly constructed fiction, full of contradiction, and this allows good people to ignore the bad parts of the book. But those who choose not to ignore the bad parts are no less christian.

And although Jesus taught that it is up to him/his other form(daddy) to punish sins, he also admonished those who were forgiven to sin no more. This would mean to stop being homosexual.

I’m not sure what the two incomplete sentences you end with mean. I have not horded wealth, allowed anyone to starve or bombed anyone. Yes it is true that I do not want to face judgment based on any religion, as I wholly reject all religions (that I know of) as harmful fictions.

Well a quill pen to papyrus on a 400 page manuscript is a bit hard to write twice even 500 years ago. It wasn’t until moveable lead type and the printing press that people could really say what they want. And sell their idea. How many “holy books” of any doctrine, religion or dogma still exist a thousand years later? Each of their coherents will say “it is willed why it still exists”.

Does fulfill mean to do away with?

” Fulfill means to “carry out.” I don’t think carrying something out and abolishing it can be the same definition. ”

….”if you child is struggling with her homework and you tell her, “I will be home to help you in a few minutes. Hang in there till I get there,” you don’t mean for her to give up once you get there. Just as by saying “till I get there” you did not mean for her to stop once you got there, so Jesus did not mean for us to stop keeping the law once He “fulfilled” it. By fulfilling the law Jesus showed us how to keep the law fully. To fill means to make full, and Jesus showed us how to keep the fullness of the law by fulfilling the law .Some have the idea that Jesus emptied the law by filling it. Yet logic shows us to fulfill is to make full and not to make empty…. “

Are you trying to use “You fulfilled your promise” to mean “you paid your debt”? Because that would be bizarre. How is the debt “fulfilled” without payment? It could be abolished or excused but not fulfilled.

Mute point since that word was not part of the “original” documents (or any equivalent word). But you should consider that you have a very strong bias to ignore fact in the pursuit of apologetics.

There is interpretation nested in that particular translation. Fullfil was added later by christians with a motive to do so. All ways read young literal translation, then look for scholars with an understanding of the culture to give interpretation.

To begin with the quote is;

“for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass.”

Laws are not fulfilled, prophesy are. The latter version comported better with the loosey goosey interpretations that became popular with the spread of the religion by Paul of Tarsus.

And there are all of the other times that jesus supposedly said the old laws were to be followed.

“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:18-19

“It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.” (Luke 16:17)

“for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass.” Mathew 5:18

“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19)

Even when he encouraged forgiveness of the adulterer, he told he to “sin no more”, clearly indicating that violating the prohibition of adultery (and by inference all the other old testament laws) was still a sin.

“Or else all the Christians would never sit where a menstruating woman sat. ”

Not true, as christians only follow the laws provided by the bible that feel right to them, and make up excuses to not follow the ones that feel wrong.

Those horrific rules you point out are alleged to have been handed down by the same deity. Yes if not for the mental gymnastic and extra layers of bullshit christians would be following all the laws of their barbaric religion.

During the life of jesus, he and his followers followed the laws in the torrah. This continued until well after his death.

http://www.fogwhistle.ca/acts/evidence.html

Of course it is all just harmful fiction. That is why we should reject new (and increasingly wacky, although kinder) interpretation and cast it all aside.

It really depends on which gospel you’re reading. Mark’s Jesus is a loving, personal man who also paradoxically preaches adherence to old testament law. John’s Jesus is a magical flying demigod who is willing to make concessions to his general Mediterranean audiance, and is almost anti-semitic in his rejection of Jewish tradition. The Christians mentioned in Acts, written before the canonical Gospels, seem to behave more like communist hippie cultists than traditional Jews(acts 2:44.) The real reason both most traditional Jews and Christians abandoned OT law in the first and second century was the destruction of the temple.

Big time! People pretty much don’t give a shit about your sexuality OR your fucking race! And that’s despite being endlessly berated, forced to use made up words (pronouns), and incessantly beating us over the head with your sexuality. I bet there wasn’t any gay conservatives out there. As usual it comes down to liberalism, the mental disorder. They make up problems, such as white supremacy, in order to advance their fascist agenda. So yes, I see everything through a political lens.

Perhaps the cross incident was real, perhaps not. Sadly, given the amount of lies and propaganda coming from the left, everything they say is suspect. Congratulations douchebags on bitterly dividing the country, perhaps irreparably, in your lame effort to appear virtuous; it is going to blow up in your face. I pray that the seeds of violence you have sown do not sprout on your doorstep.

You know who divides this country? People who bully LGBTQ and those who pretend it doesn’t happen. And those who pretend white supremacy isn’t real when white supremacists legit are all over the news with their Nazi tattoos and white supeemacist flags and shirts but you say it’s made up? Seriously do you live in a cave?

Those who divide this country are the ones making laws prohibiting transgender from being in military. Laws that Target LGBTQ and call them out. The law in FL they tried to pass to allow schools to examine children’s genitalia before they’re allowed to play sports to determine gender! Laws banning gay marriage. People who ostracize people for being gay. Churches who condemn being gay on their announcement boards in broad daylight. People who doubt victims of hate crimes acting like they brought trauma to their lives to seek attention.

I am sick of people in this country with their outrage that people of color or LGBTQ just want the same rights as everyone else. Just want to have the same life experiences and opportunities of everyone else. To just be left to live their lives and find their joy without the government telling them no, and the majority picking on them for existing. The audacity!! Jesus Christ.

And of course these hate crimes occur in the dead of night with no witnesses. Because those who are committing them are cowardly losers and won’t back their bigotry in broad daylight. [edit]

“Both sides are pushing agenda”

It is the left who are pushing identity, color of skin, as the number one priority, the very definition of racism. It is the left who make the claim that white people are inherently racist and that people SHOULD be judged based on the color of skin and want to teach that to children. It is the left rioting in the streets, destroying innocent people’s businesses and advocating fascism while claiming to be against it. It is the left that is suppressing, even factual information, that they disagree with (FASCISM). It is the left that want to TAKE your private property through schemes such as wealth taxes (FASCISM). It is the left that called for defunding police (FASCISM) that has led to a massive rise in rape, murder and other violent crimes. It is the left that looks the other way while the third world pours over the border and then demands that I pay for it. They are uninterested if terrorists or violent criminals are among them, and they certainly are. The left that once condemned “the man” now have paid contributors, admitted communist scum John Brennon comes to mind, on their payroll. The “evil corporations” that the left supposedly hates, largely funds their cause. We are in the midst of a revolution in this country. The left would happily send you to reeducation camps and have said as much. Bury your head in the sand if you want to but these are the facts.

I’m listening when you want to tell me the agenda the other side is pushing.

When you think about it, the Mormon Church resembles a spiritual MLM scheme where status is gained by bringing in suckers (and their tithes) through missionary work. Nobody was promoting hate at this little gathering. I, for one, feel only sadness that people are so rageful at other people. It feels like fear to me. Fear of something being different. I do wonder where those who are against LGBTQ+ think LGBTQ+ people come from. We spend our lives growing and coming to acceptance about who we are-gay, straight, trans, tall, short, big, skinny, black, white, etc. There are things about us as human beings that we can change and others that we can’t no matter how much we might want to. Who in there right mind would want to put themselves in the way of hatred, discrimination, and danger? But since I am here, my tasks in life are to celebrate what God has made, honor the love that I am gifted with, and help others to be loving and kind to themselves. God/Jesus and strong leaders for good give love and goodness. I am pretty sure that you want to be accepted and encouraged to be yourself. Pretty sure that it would seem outrageous to have someone threaten you because you are being yourself and your children being themselves. I support you being yourself but not being hateful. Hate is a choice. Love is a choice. There is a huge difference between love and hate. Love is encouraging and positive. Love envelopes. Hate destroys.

Churches should probably be the focus of anti-hate…

Christians of Northern California do tend to be far to the right, highly provincial, and terribly planted in the past. Anti-Vaxers and Anti-Gays/Lesbians are an awful look for Christians, who supposedly believe in love…

Christ entreated us to love each other, and, sexy-stuff aside, love is always the best way to go!

When two people love and respect each other, we should celebrate, no matter the gender.

Humboldt is a refuge for Gays/Lesbians and Counterculturists of every ilk. Humboldt is also the home of some raggedy and reactionary ignorance…

This attack is ugly, but every exhibition of ignorance and prejudice should be met with reason and a measure of patient tolerance.

Remember when we were like 5 or 6 on the playground and there was no gender or race or anything but you and me laughing and having as much fun as we could before it was time to go and we’d probably not see each other again? Think about it sometime. Thoughts of an aging gender variant and godless scud runner.

Who on earth could serve a diety that tells you to kill his son to prove his love and loyalty and then provides a sacrificial lamb to say, “just kidding? I was testing you.” Religion is just another way to control people and make sense of the chaos. Just let people be themselves and let them be responsible for their own spiritual journey. The Bible says, “love is patient and kind….” The book is full of contradictions.

Religion always has come along with rules , rules usually targeted at taking away the joy’s of life . Rules that
target our souls . Rules that take away from our individuality . Rules that go against human nature . Rules that have
killed culture’s across the world . Rules that have killed languages . Rules that have burned books . Rules that
have burned down sanctuary’s and buried reprieve . Religion has taken away from the worlds so much more that it
has ever provided . Religion is a destructive force created by man . It was created by the minority as a tool
to manipulate the majority . A way to stop revolt , and tranquilize the soul .Religion looks good on paper but the
realities are so much more dark .

Religion is what people add to or take away from the bible, The bible isn’t about religions and doesn’t promote religion.
The rules in the Old Testament need to be viewed in the context of the society it was written to, not by todays society.
The New Testament was for a more advanced society that needed to advance further.
Context is relevant.

It’s possible to respect the bible and love people irregardless of their sexuality.

No, that is in no way the definition of religion. The Bible is a religious text, it DOES promote a religion.

Yes, the old testament is a product of a much more barbaric time and reflects the morality of people in a particular time and place. This is also true of the new testament which is also very much morally abhorrent. Yes they were relatively more advanced morally but the new testament still condones slavery and females as property. Jesus also clearly says (according to the same text that informs christians of the existence and nature of their deity) that none of the old laws should be set aside.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17)

“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19)

We are due for a new new testament in order to being the primitive bronze-age death cult again up to date with our morality.

Which religion does it promote? There are hundreds of religions.
Actually the bible says we are all slaves,…. aren’t we, to money?

At the time it was written, women were property to insure their safety from the brute force of men because men tended to care more about their property than a replaceable woman and many men had more than one wife. The times of society matter.

There are societies today where women are still property especially in the Middle East.

In non Christian societies child sacrifice to other gods was common.

“Which religion does it promote?”

This is obviously not a genuine question as it is clear that it promotes Christianity.

There are thousands of religions, not hundreds, but you are not making a point here.

Times of society should not matter to the deity described in the bible, that deity is timeless.

Yes there are societies where women are still treated as property, due to the most dangerous extant religion, islam.

Yes human sacrifice was common in religions around the world, your point?

Religion is a cloaking device for a set of rules. Some are decent and key to survival (Jews- don’t eat pork in the desert when you haven’t invented refrigeration yet….Roman Catholics- don’t have lots of random sex when there are severe venereal diseases with no cure and no decent condoms and you are the port city of the known world). Most outlive their usefulness. Most get captured by those who use them to consolidate their power. But despite those assholes simple basic stuff still rings true (ex. The Golden Rule). Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed all shocked at where we ended up with their words… I’d say we need to kill these entrenched religions by this point but so many people need something to be told- so what have ya got? A joint and a crystal and some yoga?!

Religions do not cloak rule sets, they “justify” rule sets without having to make logical arguments for them.

Yes we could benefit from the death of these religions. I do not agree that people need a magic feather of morality in order to be good.

They all have their obvious rules for say….if we didn’t have electricity or running water. And those for civil living when things go all to hell. There are basic tenets to all these religions much like the US Bill of rights, which admittedly, is originally based in religious contexts, even if the writers of them were or were not particularly religious. But the rules stay the same: At least try to behave. Things work better that way.

I think most people don’t care wether your gay or straight or In love with an elephant. They do however tend to react when it’s shoved in thier face over and over. Straight people don’t have a flag that they fly or bumper stickers advertising straight relationships or parades advocating man and woman only relationships. I personally think all lives matter and don’t care who you sleep with, I don’t however care for BLM signs or rainbow flags shoved in my face. Be who you are treat people well and keep your opinions to yourself!

I feel the same way about people who have ANY flag waving (or tee shirt or other clothes), that includes the overkill of the US flag, or the Confederate flag or…take your pick. That Fish thing people put on their cars to show they are Christians. Even that little sticker some people put on their car vehicles that show how many adults, kids, pets are in their families. Oh yeah, and I do not care if your kid is an honor student at their school.

I just HATE then forcing their views on me.

i have never ever had a person of the LGBT+ community approach me and tell me that i need to be like them. never in my life have i felt threatened or pressured to change myself by a member of the community. i have however, been told by many Christian people, “if you found Jesus your soul could be saved, the Bible says that…. , God doesn’t approve of homosexuality and therefore i don’t approve of you, you need to stop talking like that and start listening to God,” the list goes on. i understand if the flag was say, one in support of Nazis, then that is displaying a hate of others and is unacceptable. however, just like an American flag is hung to display that we are proud Americans, we want to hang a flag that displays we are proud members of the community. we need pride because there are still people that make others feel that dying is better than being bisexual. that dying is better than being gay. that dying is better than being a lesbian. that dying is better than questioning who they are. this is why we need pride. people were never rolled up and burned for being straight. straight people never had to fight for their rights to be straight. straight people never have to watch their lives get debated in comments simply because they are attracted to someone of the opposite gender. pride is simply here to make people feel valid, and if people are feeling safe to come out because of it, then it’s doing it’s job. those people are all members of the community before they come out. the only difference is now they feel safer to tell others, and they get the courage despite knowing there will be hate, because at least they aren’t alone. it’s not a trend that’s spreading, it’s not forced, and those people were there and they were feeling those things before they felt comfortable enough or the need to let others know. also, dear straight people, we don’t hate you. it’s not your fault that you never had to fight for the right to be straight, or that it means anything bad about you. i think people start to feel attacked a little bit and if you are straight because straight people don’t need pride, but it doesn’t mean that one has to feel guilty about being straight. just please be respectful and you will be respected. i’m not sorry for the giant rant, but i hope you know i’m only trying to help you understand, and i am not angrily attacking you. and also, i understand that not all Christians are like this at all, these are just quotes that have been said.

I have worked with and loved many people who identify as LGBTQ. I am a straight Christian. As a Christian it is not my job to “save” anyone. If you’re in need of saving that’s Jesus job not mine and I’m sure he doesn’t need my help.

Again I will say, whom I like or love is not about sexuality, it’s about character as far as I’m concerned.
Christians are told to love every one even their enemies…. a tall order I must say.

Ha! Love that.

I think I’ve put one bumpersticker on all of my rigs. And that was to hide the weird little round ding on the back bumper. Something innocuous. “Myers Flat is where it’s at” which I had bought years before at the store in Myers Flat. Something like that. It’s been decades ago. I’ve got one sitting on my desk here that simply says “Shiny”, which possibly only nerds would recognize.

Okay, I’ll fess up, too. I had an Oregon State University Beaver sticker in my window.

I’m sure the Duck fans just hated having that shoved in their faces. (not really, the Beavers are kind of famous for terrible football, but we’re winners in baseball and marine science!!!, the last of which UO is not 🙂 )

Funny everyone talking about the right to express yourself, except when they don’t agree with you.

People have a right to think the LGBQT lifestyle is morally wrong and they have a right to express that belief without being bullied or ridiculed because of their belief. I love how some of the folks here call others hypocrites or low IQ due to their belief. Just STFU already!

NEITHER side has a right to violence ie BLM riots, burning a cross etc or harassment because of their belief. Just because you chose to be offended by others opinion and play victim does not mean people do not have a right to their opinion.

As others have expressed I am tired of this shit. Tired of everyone trying to force their opinion on me and waving it in my face. Yea you have your opinion now get on with your life and quit trying to push it on me and playing victim if I don’t agree with you.

If you are offended because I disagree with you tough shit, I don’t care. Perhaps you need to look at yourself and ask why you are so offended by people that disagree with you that it destroys your day and makes you mad. That is your problem not everyone else’s problem and I am tied of people thinking the world needs to walk on eggshells around their feelings. That is called toxic personality. Now grow up and get on with your life.

I see hate for white people, hate for christians, hate for men, hate for straight people, hate for familys and hate for religion. Infact when i see pride flags i see ignorance and supremacy, i see these people trying to takeover my culture and replace it with there own.

These people hate america, hate white culture and they are a threat to all of us.

That is why i dont support hate groups like the LGBTQ agenda.

it’s a huge problem. people don’t know, coming from a teen who has spoken to teens in other schools, kids want to kill themselves every day they go to school. they listen to their peers debate on their lives and ridicule them when often they are still closeted. it’s absolutely awful to listen, and look at, and read people debating on whether or not the pain we endure is justifiable or not. it hurts. we’d rather die than love who we love because of the people around us. these comments cause it. talk causes it. you don’t have to be murdering people for there to be an issue. the kids are suicidal. not all, but they are. we need more awareness and education. we really really do.

I’m really sorry teens are going through so much.
Please try to understand that meanness and ridicule has been common to teens through the ages.
Many years ago when I was a teen I had similar feelings over ridicule for having freckles.
Other teens got it for being fat or having a big nose, etc. Try not to go by your feelings, they will change many times in your life and some people actually grow up to be better humans than they were as teens but for some reason teen dissing seems to be part of the process and any excuse to do it will be used.

People can and do change.

Kids are mean, but they grow up. We all had to live through the gauntlet of teenage years and even before that. It’s a good thing kids are mean though, because there are much more evil and cruel things waiting for us in the world once you become an adult. You have to learn how to deal with the kid world in order to be able to cope in the adult one. Toughen up, take some jiu jitsu and kick boxing [edit] that will be all the education kids need.

I remember a kid in middle school, got picked on all the time for being eccentric, he took matters into his own hands, took some martial arts, and sent the bullies packin. Those are valuable life lessons, he learned to stand on his own two feet and the pricks learned that easy prey may not be so easy. I’m sure they held onto those lessons into their adult life far longer than anything they learned in civics.
