Eureka Man Arrested for Biting a Ferndale Police Officer

On 6/19/21 at about 1:10 AM, a Ferndale Officer was flagged down in the 300 block of Main St by a citizen reporting an aggressive subject. The officer located the subject and identified him as Sean Malcolm (52) of Eureka. Malcolm displayed the objective signs of intoxication and the officer formed the opinion that Malcolm was unable to care for his safety. Malcolm was placed under arrest for public intoxication and put into the rear seat area of the officer’s patrol car.

Malcolm became agitated in the back of the patrol car and began kicking the interior of the car, breaking out the plexiglass window of the patrol car’s partition. Malcolm received a laceration while damaging the patrol car. The officer radioed for back-up and medical assistance. The officer attempted to retrain Malcolm to prevent him from further injuring himself and damaging the patrol car as he waited for back-up. Malcolm bit the officer’s arm as he struggled, which caused only a superficial injury.

Once back-up and medical were on-scene, Malcolm was further restrained and transported to the Redwood Memorial Hospital. Malcolm was treated for a laceration to his head and cleared for booking at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF). The officer did not require any medical treatment.

Malcolm was transported to the HCCF, where he was booked and lodged for the following charges:
647(f) PC – Public Intoxication
148(a)(1) PC – Obstructing an Officer
243(b) PC – Battery on a Peace Officer
594(A)(2) PC – Vandalism
