Press release from Six Rivers National Forest:

The Six Rivers National Forest is hosting a Live Fire training event this week near Willow Creek. While one of our firefighters’ focus is wildland fire suppression, they also respond to burning vehicles, dumpsters, and structures. This training prepares responders to safely attack these fires and prevent them from spreading into wildland.

The training exercises include real-time responses to simulated vehicle fires in which participants attack a live fire. This is a chance for responders to put the skills and techniques they have learned into practice using specialized equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This is also an opportunity to evaluate leadership skills and crew communication under stress.

This Live Fire event is also a venue for cross-training between the Six Rivers National Forest and local cooperators. This year, as in recent years, local volunteer departments as well as crews from neighboring forests will participate.

Come watch these men and women in action! This is a great opportunity for still or video photography. The training takes place June 17th and 18th at the Big Rock Day Use Area near Willow Creek. Big Rock Day Use is about a 65 – 75 min. drive from Eureka. From Highway 299 E, take Highway 96 left in Willow Creek; Big Rock Day Use Area is about ½ mile on the right. For media interviews and photos, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is an ideal timeframe.

Rookies need training too, no need to train in some live situation. These were vehicle situation anyway. Relax.
