[UPDATE 7:30 a.m.] After Battle at Miranda Bridge Between Students From Different Schools, One Boy Sent to Out of Area Hospital for Eight Hour Surgery, One Girl Sent to E.R.

Fight at Miranda Bridge

Still from a video showing a multi person fight at the Miranda Bridge.

Underneath the Miranda Bridge which is located about two miles from South Fork High School, a prize swimming hole entices youth from miles around, and, last Thursday, physical clashes there between Southern Humboldt kids and ones from Fortuna led to at least two youth being sent to the hospital–one for an eight hour surgery in the Bay Area to repair a jaw broken in two places.

According to the mother of the youth whose jaw was broken, Amanda Gamble, “It was Senior ditch day for both South Fork and Fortuna kids and [both groups] ended up at the Miranda river bar.”

Gamble said, “For the most part, [the two groups being at the beach] had gone okay.”

But, she said that she was told, “The Fortuna kids were egging them on all day.” (Please note we have not heard any Fortuna youths’ version of what occurred.)

As the day grew late, many of the students had left the area. “There was just a few kids left,” Gamble explained. Gamble thought that about 4:30 or 5 p.m., the physical clashes began and continued for some time. She said that as the clashes escalated, she believes multiple 911 calls were made.

About 5:30 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported making a patrol check to the area. Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department told us Friday, “Upon arrival at the bridge…, there were no injured parties on scene. Deputies contacted a few individuals who were able to provide information about the incident, but deputies did not locate any victims.”

However, later, “at approximately 6:30 p.m.,” according to Karges, “the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a parent of an involved juvenile. According to the parent, the juvenile sustained injuries to his jaw and hand following the previous incident. The juvenile had left the scene prior to deputy arrival to the bridge. The juvenile was transported to an out of area hospital for treatment of his injuries.”

Gamble explained to us that her twin sons were both at the incident under the Miranda Bridge. She said that she was told that some of the Fortuna youth began throwing rocks at the girlfriend of her son, Cody.

Gamble said that Cody and his girlfriend left and went up to the parking area and about three of the Fortuna youth were aggressive towards them. “They were threatening to take [Cody’s girlfriend],” Gamble said she was told. She told us Cody’s girlfriend got in the car and attempted to unlock it for him. “Before she could get Cody’s door open, one kid sucker punched Cody twice on both sides of his jaw. Cody swung on the kid who was hitting him and then tackled him to ground. And that’s when the other two jumped on Cody.”

At this point, Gamble said that Cody’s brother, John, arrived, pulled the kids off of his brother, got him into the car and told him to leave. Gamble said that John “went back down to try and break up the fights on the beach.” She says there were multiple clashes occurring at that point.

She said that she was told that some of the students were drinking and that the Fortuna students ganged up on individuals. “None of them fought one on one,” she said. “It was all a ganged up fight. If you were standing too close, they went after you.”

She explained that she heard, “[The Fortuna students] were attacking one girl… She was little and she tased one of the Fortuna kids.”

Gamble says that when Cody got into the car and tried to speak to his girlfriend, “his jaw just fell apart on him.” They headed to the emergency room and Gamble said that she was called and told, “The Fortuna kids jumped Cody.”

“When I heard, I just panicked,” she told us. She headed to the Garberville Hospital where she worked. “Cody hadn’t arrived yet when I got there,” she explained. Her co-workers were very helpful she told us and began preparing for him immediately. “They were ready and waiting for him when he got there,” she told us. “His jaw was broken in two places–one on each side of his face.”

The staff arranged for a bed at San Francisco General Trauma Hospital, Gamble explained. “Just as we were leaving, John came with one of the girls that had gotten beaten up and dropped her at the Emergency room,” Gamble said. “She had a concussion.”

Still of one of the Fortuna youth attacking one of the South Fork girls

Still from a video of one of the Fortuna youth attacking one of the South Fork girls.

“My husband and I rushed Cody down [to the Bay Area],” she said. “The whole facial reconstruction team was there at the hospital. He got into surgery about 8 a.m. He was in surgery until about 5 o’clock.”

She broke down as she told this part of her story, saying, “It is not something any parent or child should have to go through.”

The surgery team didn’t have to wire his mouth shut, but they had to put plates on both sides of his jaw, Gamble said. “It will be 8 to 12 weeks before he is fully recovered.”

Gamble wanted to reiterate, “It wasn’t all the Fortuna kids. It was just a select group that were kind of tyrants. Their moral code of ethics is off.”

She added, “We do know the assailant’s name…and the Sheriff’s Department is investigating…The kid has a history of violent acts and conduct.” She said that the deputy assisting was “very supportive and helpful… I feel like he is really working with us…[but] there’s a process we have to go through…A lot of people want instant justice but it is not going to be that.”

Karges, the HCSO spokesperson, said, “Deputies have identified a possible suspect and are investigating the case.”

Gamble said she had video of the events that unfolded. “I sent the deputy all the video I have,” she told us, but she wanted to clarify with law enforcement that it wouldn’t impact the case against the assailant if she shared it with us. She did provide us with several stills from the video.

Gamble wanted to be sure and “thank the ER and radiology staff at the Garberville hospital.” And she said as she choked up, “I would like to thank the community for the huge outpouring of support…The community came together and rallied around my child.”

UPDATE 7:30 a.m.: According to Amanda Gamble, she spoke to the Sheriff’s deputy handling their case and he told her she could share the videos she collected of the fights under the Miranda Bridge with us.

So I actually know that girl your disgracing and being an asshole too…that girl who got whooped in the “fetal position” was all over the girls boyfriends there and she was being a drunken fool flashing and dancing all over the dudes there when she has a boyfriend who she had come down to try and fight the boys at the river…so maybe you shouldn’t comment some rude ass things when you don’t know the whole story… [edit]

Wow… flashing.. dancing.. flirting with boys…. sounds like “jealous rage took over” so she got jumped by a much bigger girl to “teach her a lesson” about proper swim hole etiquet. GTFO. The judge will laugh as he tosses her in jail for 7 years for assault with serious bodily injury. We are shaming her for her disgusting actions, not her body size or shape.

Yeah anyone can swim there, but violence is a different story – not justified. Fortuna kids for years now have been trashing up and being disrespectful of the sohum river bar. Now this?? Their actions are not ok. It really shouldn’t have ever come to this. I really do not see why you even commented anyone can come to the river bar… that is not the issue at hand. Those that do go to any river need to be respectful of others there, along with picking up their trash.

In the early 1990s it was was weed hash and mushrooms we were smoking and eating at the river and at the beach like Usal. There was a warm feeling of communion and love and oneness. On the days there was whiskey, vodka and hard liquor along with a few meth heads who expectantly showed up, I can humbly say the vibe of the party “back in those days” changed dramatically.
Now days its liquor, pharma pills from mommas stash, and bong rips of xanax which these kids are getting along with opiates… the 2020s arent looking so good for our youth… long gong are the days of union and light psychedelic connections… and this aweful violence and hatred… how terrible!

Nothing like hear say to get the facts. Some body told some body that told me. Your are sure to get the story. Ditch day. Lets call it what it is. Kids skipping school. You ever notice how kids who stay in school and obey the rules never get in trouble. Its like my dad always said not a thing good happens after 11. You play in the gutter eventually your are going to get dirty. In the city they settle things like this like men.

Please start a Gofund me for recovery and legal fees. This has got to stop. I don’t understand how the youth of that particular area get away with so much violence and hatred towards other groups. Sporting event violence, racial violence and slurs, and now major injuries is showing our community that the parents are not parenting or teaching their children to be part of the greater community. No one should get their Jaw broken going to the river to celebrate the accomplishment of graduating high school. FORTUNA PARENTS DO BETTER!

Yes, south fork kids aren’t into fighting, especially these kids. South fork hasn’t had a fight in years. When Fortuna kids start throwing rocks at you it is your right to defend yourself. There is no assuming about what happened, there is video and witnesses. I almost forgot to add that the Fortuna kids TRASHED the miranda river and south fork kids cleaned it up.

The idiots that smashed up the face and head of those kids will need the go-fund, to defend the hefty personal injury lawsuits heading their direction!

And if the combatants aren’t yet 18, their parents assets and peace of mind will be the target of those lawsuits.

Believe it or not, we as parents are civilly liable for the damaging behavior of our children until they reach adulthood. That’s why enforcing obedience and curfews make sense. It protects your child, and YOU!

Nice way to kick off summer, eh? Defending high dollar personal injury lawsuits for breaking a young man’s face and inflicting a traumatic brain injury to a young woman, not too smart.

I like your logic.
One group throws eggs after getting rocks thrown at them.
Then the egg throwing group tries to leave. The rock throwing group of guys then threaten to TAKE someone’s girlfriend with them against her will and that they should break someone’s jaw and jump him on the ground as he is trying to leave.
Yeah those 2 really had it coming… especially the girl being threatened that she will be taken against her will. That’s what any of us would do if someone threw an egg at us.
Also are you saying that one of the kids left and went and spent money on dozens of eggs from a store many miles away?

Of course they were drinking!

Will the Humboldt County Sheriff bother to determine what “cool parent” or older sibling provided the sauce? Probably not.

Lucky for everyone all that came of it was a concussion and broken jaw…. Oh. And the 1 in 8 ruined lives from becoming an alcoholic, a disease process that has already begun to take destructive root when a child is day-drinking during “ditch day.”

Almost 13% of the US population fit the criteria for alcohol use disorder/alcoholism. And unfortunately, it often starts with someone providing minors with booze, and the local sheriff giving a pass to intoxicated picnics like this.

“Underage drinking is dangerous and binge drinking even more so. Consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time can result in alcohol poisoning which can be fatal, underage drinking is a factor in nearly half of all teen car crashes, the leading cause of death among teenagers. Fights, assaults and sexual assaults also occur.”

The class of FUHS 1969 had our senior party at Richardson’s Grove. There was enough alcohol and dope to share and we did, Mexican stems and seeds notwithstanding, all 294 of us raised hell and had fun for a couple of days. The only fights were with one another. About 30% of those drunk fucks, both male and female, left town and went to college. I got my Master’s in Oregon and eventually came back home to retire. Some left and got rich, some ended up in jail, but most of us got what education we could afford and lived decent lives. Very few of us turned into alcoholics though some did. A few became drug addicts. A few have died. It’s what happens as we age.

This little skirmish in the culture wars won’t keep anyone out of college even if you are arrested and put in jail for a while. I don’t know where a lot of you folks live but it doesn’t seem to be the real world. Bad parenting, bad genes, ignorance and stupidity are all contributing factors and hormones for teenagers. It’s been a tough year for us all but the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be real light rather than an oncoming train. Grow up, get a life, protect what and whom you love and get on with it.

Sad that all the people in the comments take sides and trash others without knowing the full truth… bottom line is that this has been happening for a long time, some years are worse than others. What makes me really sick is the fact that all these “fights” don’t resolve anything… whatever happened to resolving problems with a 1v1… is like a bunch of wolves. These kids are being taught very poorly and will continue to be part of that pack attack mentality.

Why would Kym post something like this and add fuel to the tension and also ruin these kids lives. It’s like she wants a war.

This a lovely crock of crap. A bunch of parents fighting over high schoolers fighting. It is embarassing.

Because if news, even bad news, is not widely known, nothing changes. Sweep it under the rug. bye bye. All happy now. Don’t worry be happy. Don’t acknowledge, don’t reform. Bad, bad, bad, don’t post it.

Because a twice broken jaw & a concussion…these are serious assaults. These are unacceptably violent behaviors. Because it is time to break the cycle of violence & grow up. And because parents deserve to know what their kids are doing.

Thank you Kym. There have always been very bad apple trees and very bad apples that fell from those apple trees in Fortuna. [edit]. Thats what we get from rotten families with rotten parents rotten home life and rotten kids

Definitely NOT a bible-thumper, but some stories are positive. By their fruits, you will know them. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

So next season, plant a ‘Conference Pear’ and find out what a good tree is all about. Your own Christian parable in the flesh. How cool is that?

Kym, Thank you for posting this article and videos. Kids are traumatized during grade school and high school and never get over it. It is inexcusable to call it normal. We are lucky that there are now cell phones to document incidents like this. I hope that authority figures—– parents, police, social workers—–will use this as an opportunity to truly help these kids, because, violent or not, they are all kids. I really value that you give us the gritty, personal news. It is why I check this site every single day.

Shouldnt be hard to identify that heavy set girl in black beating up girls clearly just trying to defend themselves. That’s called assault plain and simple. The poor girl is sitting in the fetal position getting blasted. Hope parents know they are liable for damages caused by their children. Either that or the kid gets tried as an adult and get a real felony assault charge that stays there for life. Hopefully spend a few weeks on the inside with people that will literally eat them for breakfast. Either way defense lawyers are never cheap.

Is anyone looking into where these kids got the alcohol and other substances they were probably taking? I say it’s a safe bet that at least one of the parents responsible for these kids provided them with the alcohol and other substances. It’s really sad that kids ended up getting hurt because their parent wanted to be the “cool mom” and let them “kids be kids” and allow them to drink and smoke.

This is a lie. SoHum kids are ALWAYS more behaved then Fortuna kids. Do you live under a rock? Try opening your eyes to the world around you. Kym is only showing it like it is and her community appreciated her for it. Now go mind your business

In a society that is absent of rituals for the youth and especially puberty…. the youth will invent their own rituals, usually involving gangs and some sort of violence… Imagine in 1966 kids like this were sent in to Viet Nam w/ a license to kill…. How about a dose of restorative Justice here? And some martial arts training?…….Suggestion. If anyone is ever attacks you on the beach… Think about throwing a handful sand in their face of your attacker… works every time. Then leave fast.

Why do the fortuna kids drive 35 miles to get there? They know they are invading.
There are many beaches closer to fortuna; this is shit disturbing, plain & simple

Every time some says something outrageous , someone comes along to go further. What is this? Westside Story? A gang fight on LA or New York? No one “invades” going onto public land. This is not some romantized Hollywood movie with a cheap sensationalized plot.

As a person who lives in Fortuna high school district, I can say that the, “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality is alive and well up here. The high school not only had a real bullying problem with their students, but the authorities do nothing to curb it. One of my sons was jumped by a kid twice his size, got a concussion and my son was suspended for fighting back, defending himself. And the kids that attacked him, nothing but a suspension identical to my sons. I should of pressed charges, because Duey did nothing. Another of my sons was afraid to go to high school. The bullying was so rampant. Caused him severe anxiety. The people running the school need classes on how to deal with bullying. It needs to be curbed early on. It doesn’t help when you have parents that think it’s ok to beat someone down. Also, I would bet some of these kids are abused at home. This is very sad to see. It would be nice to interview some of the Fortuna kids that were there to get a full picture of what happened. But regardless of what happened prior, it’s easy to see from the videos that assaults were not in self defense, but actual attacks. Especially on the sitting girl. Charges need to be filed, lessons need to be learned.

Boy this dredges a lot of old “give’r a go” High School memories for many, myself included.
But for the vast majority of us, deadly violence wasn’t part of the rivalry glory.
In the late 80’s whenever Laytonville FB played Covelo in RV, the RV kids would ambush the bus on a big slow switchback descending into RV (stunningly beautiful view of RV included) and absolutely pummel the bus with eggs.
This was exciting fun for all, fired up both teams and supporters, and guaranteed an intense game.
On some occasions eggs entered in open windows, but fair enough.

Life changing violence was so far off the radar, in a rivalry relationship that was passionate and intense as any in local HS life. What is different now?

Bottom line is , the kids that done this need to be arrested ! Let the court handle this chaos… They think it’s a cool thing to do , but let me say , if I was the parent of the child seriously hurt , I would slap a lawsuit so fast it would make the heads spin of the parents!!!!! You see that’s what is wrong with today’s world . As a parent myself, hold your kids responsible for this crap !!!!
All of those kids should be ashamed of what they did , Both sides not just Fortuna , but also South Fork High !!!!
Man I bet these parents are so proud of those kids 👏🏼 Parenting of the year for 2021 …. May this child heal fast and be able to get on with life !

Seriously? Why should SoHum kids be ashamed for defending their swimming hole against the murderous Fortuna High squad? That spot belongs to the well behaved kids. Not Fortuna thugs.

These kids are much far worse than homeless people. And don’t give me this kids will be kids there’s no place in our society where kids should be allowed to do this at any time. The homeless get blamed for far too much destruction when there’s another population out there that does far worse

I’m sure the south fork kids are completely innocent and it was entirely the big bad fortuna kids that are 100% to blame (and yes, so much sarcasim in that statement).

Who are we kidding, both groups of kids are responsible. I highly doubt that the fortuna kids just came out swinging for no reason at all. I’ve met the south fork kids involved in this fight, they are not innocent and a few of them have parents that encourage thid type of behavior. We, as adults, need to stop defending and excusing their behaviors. Eveyone invloved needs to be punished; the kids and the adults that supplied them with the alcohol and drugs. Stop turning a blind eye to this type of behavior. I’m embarrassed that there are adults on this page defending the immature actions of all of the people involved.
Stop with the excuses — be a parent and stop trying to be their friend.

We’ll see. Seems like some parents and others are heavily invested in the shared-blame theory. Obviously, this reduces the guilt and legal liability for the fruit of their loins and, thus, THEM. Might be true. See what comes out in court. Shared blame is seductive and a reasonable path for starters, but it is not always the case. And blame can be shared 70-30 which means 70% gets the big bill. Talk to a lawyer.

If I am sitting at a red light and get rammed from behind by one of the ever-increasing morons that plague our streets, it is 0% my fault and 100% the moron’s fault.
