Nordic Aquafarms Launching ‘Pre-Qualification Process for Humboldt County Contractors’ on Tuesday

This is a press release from Nordic Aquafarms:

Nordic aquafarmsNordic Aquafarms is currently working to obtain permits for its land-based aquafarm planned for the Samoa Peninsula. While Nordic has engaged national construction firm Gilbane Building Company as the Construction Manager for this approximately $500,000,000 project, Nordic is also focused on providing opportunities for local contractors to participate in this project.

“While we have signed an agreement with Local Operating Engineers we also want to ensure we provide opportunities and access the most qualified local contractors and their workforce,” stated Marianne Naess, Nordic Aquafarms Executive Vice President Commercial in charge of the Humboldt County project.

“Our members, in conjunction with other crafts, are a perfect solution to their needs, and this project is a win-win for Nordic and the community. We need local jobs in Humboldt County. Period. This project will make that happen. We’re onboard and have been very impressed with how thorough Nordic has been in this process and how responsive they are to the needs of our community,” said Jeff Hunerlach, Operating Engineers Local 3 district representative.

“Humboldt County has a large number of skilled contractors. Projects such as Nordic’s will allow them to sustain and grow their workforce and contribute even more to the local economy,” states Rob McBeth, President of O & M Industries. “We appreciate Nordic’s recognition and desire to use local resources in the construction of the project on the Samoa Peninsula.”

Contractors are encouraged to attend an upcoming information meeting to learn more about the project and opportunities for local contractors.

It is Mind Boggling that they would allow this business to proceed forward while our stock of ocean salmon is almost depleted. The obvious solution would be to reinstate the Chinook hatchery program and clip all the adipose fins of hatchery fish. Protect our bay and water resources. I wonder if the real goal of pimping out our resources to a foreign company is a ploy to have someone else pay for the cleanup of the old mill site.
I also do not understand why the tribe doesn’t have their own hatchery system in place, it seems like they govern by different laws. They could in their own sense control their own destiny. The Klamath River is Hurtin’ for certain.
If we proceed in the direction we have been for the last 10-15 years, the only option for locals would be to consume your antibiotics with some Farm Raised Atlantic Salmon here on the pristine Pacific Coast.

That is a good idea about the tribe operating a hatchery. Maybe they could ask Congressman Jared Huffman to carry that football to Washington.

$500,000,000 just for construction, that is a big project.

Norway is rich (North Sea oil) and has been investing since the 70s in Atlantic Salmon farming technology. Cuz of this, Atlantic Salmon has nearly half of the ocean fish farm market world wide.

Atlantic Salmon is a cold water fish so their fish farms need to be located near cold ocean water so N Ca. coast is a good site from that perspective. The existing 1.5 mile pipeline out into the ocean should expedite the project.

Seems like Samoa peninsula has a lot of projects going on.
