All the evidence point to the opposite conclusion. If you drive at 100%of the vehicle’s capabilities you don’t have any margin of error. If a turn is sharper than you anticipated, or somebody else screws up in your path you don’t have time to recognize, react, and have the car respond. Good pilots keep ” three mistakes above the ground.”

Umm , facts please. It has been proven for awhile now that people who speed are involved in fewer accidents as opposed to others as speeders tend to be more focused on driving than everything else. Please stop spreading false rumors.

“In general however, the relation is very clear and has been shown in a large number of studies: the higher the speed, the greater the probability of a crash.”

You’re welcome for the facts.

Its the white knuckers that cause accidents, they are out of their comfort zone. Phones and drugs ,pharmaceutical or illegal both the same. Do your drugs at home ,pain killers and driving are not acceptable.

Antichrist is correct. Slow drivers cause a proportionally larger percentage of accidents. This was shown in the ’60s. It’s been debated a lot since then, but seems to be correct. Generally, people drive abnormally slowly because something is wrong with them. They’re either impaired, distracted, senile, brain-damaged assholes who don’t mind that they’re being an obstacle for the entire rest of the world, or just bad drivers who can’t deal with normal traffic speeds, and all of these groups cause much more accidents than average drivers. I’ve attached the most famous accident-rate-vs-speed curve.

Beware of misleading statistics being used to justify writing profitable speeding tickets. For example, claiming that a large percentage of accidents involve a speeding driver are worded to make it sound like speeding was the cause – but that percentage is much smaller than the percentage of drivers exceeding the posted speed limit, showing that the few slow drivers were actually causing a huge portion of accidents. But, profit….

“beware of misleading statistics”
That looks like total accidents, including fender benders in mall parking lots. Try a graph of fatal accidents.

Yep, it’s the Lookie Lous, Unsure Unsers and park to turn idjits that cause the accidents when those of us driving high performance machines on Kalifornistan’s subpar and inferior roads smack into their hesitant, half stepping asses.

Most, if not all of Highway 20 needs to be driven with your complete attention as to what is happening around you. The road is full of curves, narrow spots, etc. If someone is tailgating you pull over and let them go by. Holding up traffic makes many driver’s lose their patience and try to pass when it is not safe. With the hot weather you will find more intoxicated drivers using the whole road. I am sorry for the people that did not cause the accident. Hopefully they will be fine. People slow down and enjoy the ride you will live longer.

I agree that ALL of Hwy 20 requires particular attention.
The only lengthy sort of straightaway is the last 5 miles stretch or so coming out of the foothills toward Williams and vice versa. Of course that’s where all the raging frustrated drivers speed up and try to pass the “slow pokes”. Of course the HWY patrol knows that too and it is just the spot where they write the most tickets. I drove this road and 299 once a week for 21 years and have witnessed more accidents on HWY 20 that on HWY 299.
Both are extremely dangerous to sane drivers because of the insane holders of Drivers licenses. DMV needs to institute a sanity test to determine proclivity to road rage before issuing a license. It’s an easy test to piss someone off!!

If somebody is going so slow as to bug you, pull over and pee or something. Nobody is forcing you to drive beyond your limits, or your right of way! If you pass at a bad time it’s on you!

The flow of traffic people. Go the flow, enjoy that beautiful drive if the flow allows but when she’s flowing fast, pay attention to the road and flow with it or pull over and enjoy until the next pack of cars catches you Let them by and repeat.

We need more sobriety checkpoints too. Sobriety checkpoints started after research showed, on average, that :
1. 1 in 5 people behind the wheel had consumed a drink or a beer within 45 minutes of driving.
2. 1 in 10 people behind the wheel were legally drunk.
And….
3. 1 in 40 people behind the wheel were too drunk to walk.

Just saying more sobriety checkpoints wouldn’t hurt. Not just on 4th of July.

People are way too distracted, or not driving the proper speed for the road conditions. These accidents seem to be happening quite often .

Drugs are never a factor, only 80 percent of drivers use and drive.

The problem on Hiway 20 is the 55 instead of 65 speed limit. It alone pisses a normal person off.

You’re talking about places like the Autobahn. On Hwy 20, and most of 101 in Mendo and Humboldt the winding two lane roads are not forgiving of even a slight lapse of attention. Speeders, drunks, and the impatient drivers who are afraid that driving the speed limit will delay their arrival by 2 minutes, put the careful drivers in deadly danger.
