About 4 p.m., Eureka Police arrived at the scene of a man with a knife near the Eureka Rescue Mission, according to traffic over the scanner. Eventually, a taser was deployed and, after a struggle, the man was subdued.

Medical personnel and officers attempted to treat the man. According to our reporter at the scene, the man appeared to be having a mental health episode. He kept struggling even as officers and personnel attempted to assist him.

According to a witness at the scene, no one else was injured.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: According to Brittany Powell,

Just after 3:50 p.m. Officers with Eureka Police Department responded to the 100 block of 2nd street for the report of a male brandishing a knife and refusing to leave the Mission. The caller reported the male charged staff with the knife. Officers arrived on scene and the male was not compliant and resisted. A taser was deployed. Officers were ultimately able to get the man detained and with the assistance of Humboldt Bay Fire and City Ambulance he was transferred to the hospital. The incident is under investigation and unknown at this point if it will be handled criminally or be mental health related.

You’re a little confused there, avenuerider. BLM and antifa get gassed and beaten before they’re arrested. It’s assault rifle toting racist white trash murderers like Kyle Rittenhouse that get handed refreshments and well wishes on their way home.

Everyone knows all snarkbots personally review all the relevant legal cases, directly—before all evidence has been collected and trials (and any appeals) have been conducted, and thusly claim to know the truth.

Me as well. Antifa and BLM are domestic terrorists that is funded by George Soros to do nothing but create chaos in the streets. That’s ALL they care about. Do your research

Gas the BLM and antifa punks, beat them good. They have killed and injured innocent people, destroyed their businesses, and what have they accomplished? Nothing but more division and hate. Assholes. We think it would be a good idea to catch them in nets, and fly them away to a prison camp, putting them to work helping those they have hurt with their evil Nazi Marxist ways. They are such racist people.

The fascists are the ones who stormed the capital on Jan 6. Many of them openly adore and support Hitler. You are gullible and wrong.

I think you meant: thank you EPD for dealing with this violence so that innocent people just going about their lives can have a semblance of hope of coming home to their families at the end of the day.

Honestly, downtown Eureka’s streets and alleyways have become a haven for homeless. Tents in paid parking lots, doorways becoming toilets. Downtown needs help, desperately. Mental health issues/ housing need to be addressed or this will be a revolving problem.
A low income apartment in what parking lots there are, this isn’t going to solve anything, but affects small businesses/ local businesses that are already struggling from Covid closers. Instead of building, work first on restoring downtown to BC, businesses are struggling. Apartments will make the beautiful downtown less accessible to everyone, including the new tenant who needs to park their vehicles.
Come on City council. Board of supervisors, this is not in the community best interests.
Help downtown, help our City

First we need to figure out what caused so many people’s mental health to deteriorate, drugs. Less drug use ,better mental health. Just have to stop the drug use, that’s all. Good luck, meth use is going up every year, and burnt out druggies are doubling every year.

“Mental health issue” = social worker. Clipboards are basically stab proof.

Reality check, folks:

”We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” –George Orwell.
