Yesterday, about 2:30 p.m. a Kia sedan registered out of Oregon caught on fire between the Salmon Creek exit and Myers Flat.

According to Officer Nathan Bjork speaking for the California Highway Patrol, when law enforcement arrived on scene the occupant/s were gone. However, he said, a witness saw the occupant fleeing the area in an Audi.

According to a Facebook user called Emylee Lane who posted in Hey Garberville, What’s Going On? yesterday, “[I watched] a car catch fire on freeway today.. pulled over to make sure driver got out and called dispatch.. the guy jumped in a car [following] him and peeled off.. I was shocked 😳 car blew up!!!”

Officer Bjork told us that the incident “seems suspicious but not out of the ordinary.” He explained that because law enforcement in the rural area takes long to respond than is typical in an urban area, occupants will frequently leave an incident before law enforcement arrives. “We have a relatively long response time 15 -20 minutes generally,” he said.

But, he said, “The car has not been reported stolen [and] it is not uncommon that people don’t want to talk to law enforcement after something like this.”

Dude just described 98% of Humboldt County. Abnormal but par for the course for this place.
