Last week we learned alleged hazing led to the suspension of the HSU women’s softball team and an investigation. Hazing often involves humiliation and imposing sometimes dangerous rituals within teams and other groups, especially on college campuses.

Expertly discussing the topic at length in the episode below is renowned psychologist Dr. Susan Lipkins. Lipkins has weighed in on hazing campus conflict via the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, ESPN, CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and now Humboldt Last Week among other outlets.

The interview begins at 11:45.

Episode description:

A renowned psychologist discusses hazing after HSU women’s softball is temporarily suspended, a hit-and-run suspect was arrested, the zoo’s elevated redwoods walkway has an opening date, our expensive housing market, thank-yous, locally-related Apple TV and Hulu and AMC shows, COVID updates, a heartbreaking knifing involving children, palm readers, bean-bag shotguns, an NFL team is encouraged to pay an HSU export well, local musicians the Bayside Music Collective, and more.

I find the Podcast Format, the very annoying advertisements, and, Myle’s habit of burying the lead story under various “other” items, to be much too much to tolerate…

I just can’t get with seeing “Read More”, and then finding out that I have to listen to another Myles Cochrane’s damned “podcast”…

Myles, it’s all too boring, the material was previously covered by a competent reporter that does not force me to hear commercials, and, even the lead item is much too trivial to cause me to suffer through another of your silly discussions…

Namaste, Mr Myles, be well… Hope the women learn to get along soon, whatever else happened.

I still have no idea what it says, as there’s still no transcript being published of it. I get annoyed when I click what sounds like an interesting story, then realize it’s this, and only get a little blurb with no details. The headlines used to make it obvious that it was going to be audio, so I wouldn’t waste time clicking them.

What’s going on in my life that I need written articles or a transcript, not audio? That’s not “getting better” any time soon. But, from your reply to VMG, I should have guessed that you’d find some way to be a dick about it, rather than trying to improve your content based on criticism – theirs that you apparently have a bunch of ads and fluff, and mine that your content is not accessible. But, being a dick seems to be working for you, if your page of cherry-picked ego-stroking is any indication, so have fun.

I agree, and BT and I are not the same person.

Since you want to quote testimonials, please feel free to use my comment, above.

Thanks, for, as BT stated, being unpleasant and smugly Millennial about it all, but I really don’t care about college kids fussing that they perceive everything to be so unfair. They should probably learn that the world belongs to those who take what they need, and that the meek inherit only their own complaints… Women often tend to be mean to each other, while competing for, whatever it is that women want… Get over it! My advice, to them and you, Myles, Be less sensitive, and deal with your own “uncomfortable feelings” on the spot, rather than running to “complain to mommy”…

Have a special day, Myles!

Tell it, Bushy! Transcripts are a necessity for those with hearing issues. If Cohcrane chooses to ignore or worse, belittle that, I agree that he’s being a (disability) dick. Get that, Myles?

Whoa people… if you have a real problem, explain what it is before throwing crap. First it started out with VMG’s complaint about content and format then went to a bout of posturing because it was never made clear that the conversation change from a pissy complaint about content when it was obvious the complainer could hear but wanted read ( i think,, it’s still not clear) to an unexplained complaint from someone who wants to read because they can’t hear (again i think but it’s still not clear.)

Mr. Cochrane,

With all due respect,

You clearly are not catering to your entire audience.
If it is so easily doable to transcribe audio files maybe you could provide that service for
your anxious audience somehow.

The customer is always right.

Why the snark?

I believe I know what makes you this way, and I believe it has gotten much better.

Never paid any attention to your podcast, as I am not much of a listener, either, but I love to read.

Your disregard for Bushytails bordered on disrespect.

Her critique of your format should not be confused with criticism.

It was constructive criticism.

That’s different.

She sounded genuinely disappointed that she could not also enjoy it.

You see, I am hyper-observant and overly analytical.

I listened to your podcast, to confirm my suspicions of why you would be focusing on an audio, rather than a visual presentation based only on your
Selfie just trying to understand the snark.

It sounded pretty good.

But,

Sure enough.

Unless I am mistaken…

It actually explains so much.

Justifies it, almost.

It’s almost imperceptible to hear.

Easier to see in the picture,
actually.

Don’t freak out.

Your cool.

Once I noticed one of my friends ring fingers didn’t bend past the middle knuckles.

He said no one had noticed it before. No one. It’s all about how he held a bat.

That’s my curse.
It’s all I see. And/ or, it’s all I hear.

And I “see” why you would want to focus on your audio presentations.

It’s not an insult. I can’t take criticism, either.

You should be commended on how well you have overcome it.

Maybe you’ll be an Anchor some day, Myles.

I’ve noticed many if not most of them have overcome the same type of struggle.

That takes guts, hard work and perseverance.

Seriously.

I’ve been through it, too.

You really should not disrespect your elders, though, just because you can’t take criticism, and you jumped to the wrong conclusion.

You don’t need too counter a suggestion, as if it was an insult.
It wasn’t.

It’s not a good look, and it doesn’t reflect well on your employer, either.

It is the comment section though, and there is some leeway there, I guess.

Certainly no disrespect of women, though, and especially if they are customers just asking for an elevated level of service, due to necessity.

Practice makes perfect, as you well know, unless someone is hard of hearing.

Me and Bushytails are the same age.

You see, I pay attention, sort of.

And no, BT, and VMG, and I, are not the same commenter.

You sound like TRB.

I don’t listen very well, have horrible tinnitus, and I don’t hear that well either, so I prefer a quiet atmosphere, and I understand BT.

To be fair,

Bushytails might be onto something, I tried to picture what a transcribed, condensed, version of the last week in news might look like, and I thought it might be very interesting…

Could be very popular.

You have virtually perfected your
presentation and your delivery, if you really want to be successful, POLISH YOUR ACT.

What this world lacks is that which is REFINED.

Be that guy.

I know, I know, you never asked for no, “Helpful Hints”.

Another of my shortcomings is providing unsolicited advice.

This time towards your continued success.

Good Luck, Myles.

And be tactful,
You know, if you must, make them look forward to the trip…

Bushter et al, I listened to the HSU thing, and a couple others, thought they were well done. He didn’t call anybody any names either, Shows class. We don’t care if you like or don’t like his fromat. The solution, is DO NOT LISTEN to it. In fact, put on your investigator hat, and find out some info on the thing, and come back and give a report. Can you do that all on your own? Is calling someone a dick the same as calling someone a c**t ? This is like a few c**ts not wanting people to sing “My Old Kentucky Home at the Kentucky Derby. Fuck you. Don’t sing it if you don’t want to. But you do not have the right, authority, whatever, to tell the rest of us what we can or cannot sing. And exactly how would they enforce it? You can’t stop thousands of people at a gathering from standing up and singing.

Myles, thanks for your work, we really appreciate the work that you and the other Humbolt reporters do to keep us informed.

The issue is just that a lot of people would prefer to read rather than listen, nothing to do with your particular podcast.

Just tap along the sound line til you find what you want. Tap to skip ads if you want. The segments are flagged by low bars. It’s pretty user friendly. And don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Does forcing people to take an experimental medical treatment to attend constitute hazing?

Since you have graduated:

Over 100 million people vaccinated. It’s no “experiment”…

Try doing some research.

Soon, you will need proof of vaccination to do anything, go anywhere. You read it here first.

How does a lot of people being involved mean it’s not an experiment? That just means it’s a really large experiment.

Regarding proof of vaccination, that’s not true or likely, but is an effective way to peer-pressure the hesitant into joining the experiment. Pretty screwed up, don’t you think? To bully people to take an experimental medical treatment they don’t need because you’re scared of a cold?

Goodness, HSU Grad:

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Reaching-Herd-Immunity-Is-Unlikely-in-the-U-S-16146380.php

You don’t have to look far to gauge the effect of the stubborn, the iconoclastic, and the ignorant.

Believe what you want, COVID is a real threat, and even at less than 1% mortality, it is inconvenient to be seriously ill, with a significant threat of death.

The point of vaccines, is to possibly prevent a preventable disease. If you don’t want to take the vaccine, hell, I can’t force you!

Best thing to do, is get educated, be reasonable, take care of your own health, and act responsible enough to not try to affect other people’s opinions.

It’s not an experiment, but we are all learning, every day!

Try learning today!

Namaste all! Be well…

Really, a poor quality news item, about a squabble, apparently…

Stories about HSU’s problems, are usually shrouded in secrecy anyway…

Something happened, but, it’s a secret…

Not worth thinking about, or, listening to a podcast, containing commercials.

News items should have some content, and some point…

Appreciate you deleting my last comment.

Once again. What exactly makes you an expert? And an expert of what exactly?

I personally practice judicial law and have for almost half a century. I am by far no expert.

I am very interested in your response.

I will even go as far as to say if you profess that your field of expertise is hazing I will never comment here again nor read another article on this site.

Given your comments I don’t doubt such a proffer from you.

Your hostility is thickly sliced.

Less mean to Ms Kemp, less “expert witness”, fewer insults, and back off the “lawyer angle”…

You don’t need to sue everybody, and usually, attorneys only do their job, when someone is paying for their time…

Maybe retire, and enjoy breathing the air and hearing the birds, while you are able…

And they are EXPENSIVE!! Too expensive for most workers at or just about the $15 per hour work. I was hit by an uninsured driver. Police determined it was her fault for running a stop sign. Attorney approached me saying he could file the legal paperwork to sue the driver…….for a price. A driver who was unemployed, but could maybe in an illegal business. I don’t think I would have even the most remote chance of being compensated for about $11,000 in damages. I can’t afford Collision and Comp. insurance. So I walked until I could afford a bicycle. Maybe in a couple of years I will be able to afford another vehicle. Riding in the rain sucks!

Unfortunately I have to read all this crap. I will pass the torch to the para eventually.

The state reads every article and caches the comments. They do this because of the immense amount of pertinent information proffered on these sites.

Sadly it is a conflict of interest for me constantly and we are working on a way to simplify the process as we lack the states resources.
