Emerald Cup 2022 Will Move to Los Angeles, Add ‘Harvest Ball’ Norcal Event

This is a press release from the Chapter 2 Agency:

The iconic cannabis competition, The Emerald Cup, is proud to announce they are moving the ECA’s (The Emerald Cup Awards) and legendary festival for 2022 to Los Angeles. This news follows a historic 2021 event where the pandemic-proof event went virtual – via hundreds of hours of new and existing content – becoming “The Emerald Cup Channel” on cannabis’ first TV network Social Club TV. A full director’s cut of the event debuted for video-on-demand on 4/20/2021.

Staying connected to their roots the traditional December dates for the Cup will live on as the Emerald Cup Harvest Ball and the beginning of the Road to the Cup.  The event will be the opening of submissions for the Spring 2022 contest and the beginning of the Road to the Cup.  The event will be more intimate than the past and focus on the fresh harvest and genetics.  Tickets will be limited so don’t wait and miss out.  Described as a global gathering of the Emerald Cup tribe in celebration of the traditional harvest time, the event will take place in Santa Rosa, CA over 2 days and will continue to offer education, entertainment and community to their international family and fan base.

“The tribe has spoken and we are making the move to bring our Cup to the world’s largest cannabis community and industry  – Los Angeles” says The Emerald Cup founder and CEO Tim Blake. “Following our most recent, and largest event ever, our community has exploded and we are transitioning to a venue closer to the epicenter of California’s cannabis market. This evolution continues as we cement our place as the most recognized and attended cannabis competition in the world.”

Named the “Academy Awards of Cannabis” by Rolling Stone, The Emerald Cup, has celebrated excellence in organic, sun grown and now indoor cannabis with over 35 catagories and awards across the product spectrum from flower, concentrates, topicals and edibles. Attracting countless attendees and special guests over the years, including top talent including The Roots, Ziggy Marley, Michael Franti, Rebelution, Chelsea Handler and SantiGold. Joining the calendar and complementing The Emerald Cup, the new Harvest Ball is an opportunity for the community among the cannabis industry to serve as a first opportunity to submit entries for the 2022 Emerald Cup Awards, but will also host a diverse marketplace, high-wattage musical performances and expert panel discussion on trends and innovation and in the industry.

Key elements of The Emerald Cup Harvest Ball will include:

  • Featuring the fresh harvest of the growing season with a focus on new genetics
  • Marketplace
  • Emerald Concert Stage
  • Kickoff to the 2022 Emerald Cup Contest
  • A Sanctuary Space honoring plant medicine with educational and entertainment programming
  • Area 101 (Where it all started)
  • Regenerative Agriculture Garden Activation
  • VIP Parties
  • Food, Beverages and Cannabis

“With over 17 events, starting with our first in 2004, the Cup has always been a fixture on the cannabis and festival calendar with our early December presence,” shared Tim Blake. “With the pandemic forcefully changing, and evolving us, we moved this year’s event to April. The response from our community, entrants and audience was resounding, this new timing was better for growing and cultivating the most optimum entries for competition. Our new event the Harvest Ball  continues to open the space for our community to bond and share information in the wake of a time of massive change across all parts of cannabis. What this experience is teaching us is that our industry thrives on communication and collaboration. We are confident the Harvest Ball will quickly blossom into a must-attend in all our calendars.”

For more information on The Emerald Cup 2022, The Emerald Cup Harvest Ball or to speak with founder Tim Blake, please contact Kenneth Loo, Chapter 2, [email protected].

Emerald Cup in L.A. what the fuck! I wish ya the best Tim but you should change the name cause nothing Emerald about it. Maybe it’s time for a new awards festival that allows traditional market to compete as well for outdoor grown weed that is grown in Humboldt, Trinity and Mendo.

Can the Emerald Triangle claim ownership of the name the way Champagne, Cologne, and a certain cheese region (I forget which right now) did? Let ’em get their own name like sparkling wine. The SmellA Cup. They can play on the double, triple meaning. Or, the Smog Cup.

I really don’t want to believe they did this. I mean it is believable, but wtf. It’s not the emerald cup. It’s not the Chad Cup. They really won’t be happy until all cultures are meshed into the hipster douche fuckery that is so cal…. I hope this shit fall on it’s face like high times did after selling out the roots of the plant!

I suppose “this new timing (April) was better for growing and cultivating the most optimum entries for competition” means it is all about indoor now…
How does that fit with a “key element” being “Regenerative Agriculture Garden Activation”?

Yes I agree with everyone, the timing is perfect for so cal deserts first run deps, however in the emerald triangle our season is April-October . They can have fun with their harsh stress weed outdoor. They def need to change the name now to the SoCal cup.

LA is the largest regional market in the world – and as it turns out, LA loves LA grown pot.

As long as the Triangle continues in their bubble which tells them that Triangle brand loyalty is going to save them, the longer the delusion will continue.

Wake up Triangle — your well deserved reputation for great weed is not immune to competition.

Well grown weed no matter where it’s grown will sell. Now the issue for us in the triangle is most seasoned growers are not permitted. Those carrying the Humboldt, Trinity and Mendo cannabis flag are mostly (not all but to many) friends and family of the BOS or planning department. The main reason the Traditional Market is thriving is because we do not get to play in the legal cannabis sandbox (me by choice). Free the plant and you will find that the triangle will be known again for growing dank ass weed.

Now as far as the weed sold in dispensaries, it’s some weird stuff. When I was younger it was all about fat nugz that you could throw at a wall and it would stick. (Not literally it would attach itself for a second or two and fall.) Somehow the dispensaries have convinced people that extremely dry, tiny nugz that bounce back at you when thrown at the wall is the best weed. I think it’s just best to say the LA market prefers corporate weed which has no affect since 99% of what I grow leaves the state.

Yeah, I can’t argue with your assessment of typical licensed dispensary weed (Ugh).

I run down that row of little plastic boxes and give each a sniff and it’s like smelling 6 month old ass weed without any differentiation from box to box.

I also agree with your Traditional Market assessment — the Triangle can dominate it for the very same reasons it has done so for 40 years. Small growers, small buyers, top dollar – can’t beat it as a flexible way of life (until you lose everything and find yourself under the thumb of the Feds).

Indoor grown has no identity. It’s almost always chemically grown and energy intensive. The chemical runoff water goes down the drain, and what? Magically disappears? The E Cup lost their last shred of credibility when they added an indoor category.

// “It’s almost always chemically grown…”//

Numerous indoor growers are now totally organic in soil, and some are even in beds with living soil. You are correct however that the majority are salts grown.

// “… and energy intensive.”//

Again you are correct that the overwhelming majority of indoor operations are huge energy users. This changes however when a utility scale solar farm is located next to an indoor facility in a cool, dry, sunny climate.

Solar Therapeutics in Somerset Massachusetts was the first in the nation to include a micro-grid scale solar farm at their facility. This is not a ‘window dressing’ size farm, but one with real impact on their power usage.

Were they in a more climate ideal and rural area (as we are), they would have had the room to go full utility scale with the solar farm (as we are in process of doing), demonstrating the viability of carbon neutral indoor cultivation. We believe we’ll be the first to get there on any significant scale.

// “The chemical runoff water goes down the drain, and what? Magically disappears? “//

In CA, the Water Board doesn’t allow indoor/greenhouse runoff to go down any drain that doesn’t lead to a water treatment facility capable of removing the salts. You have only two choices — utilize such a treatment facility (which can be municipal or your own engineered and installed solution), or store the runoff until it can be hauled away by a licensed hazardous waste hauler and treated.

// “The E Cup lost their last shred of credibility when they added an indoor category.”//

Whether you like it or not and whether it’s deserved or not, the E Cup has broad credibility with consumers. An E Cup win provides a significant advantage in consumer marketing.

I have to say that from my observation (I have friends who have won), the credibility is not deserved — but that has nothing to do with the categories, but rather due to a process that is way too political. Just my opinion.

Indoor soil is only “living” for about 24 hours after adding the “life” (beneficial microbes). Unless you are using plasma bulbs that have enough UV to penetrate the soil the microbes die rapidly.

While under HID lighting, it was true that the UV (especially “B”) dosage indoors was not the same as outdoors, plenty of studies have shown that with the high wattage/sf thrown at modern grow rooms, UV from HID lighting can exceed even OSHA exposure standards (especially for “A”).

Under modern LED, that delta no longer need be true. UV leds are now more commonly being mixed in with the full spectrums to provide whatever mj/cm2 is desired.

Many things previously not practical indoors are becoming more common.

Do you know of a LED company that makes that claim? I’d be keen to know as I’ve not found any in previous research. The only lights I’ve found that make that claim are plasma lights and cost over 5k per.

I’d love to know if biodynamic farming is now possible indoors.

LEDs (A, B, C) are readily available in many form factors so I’m not sure I understand your “claim” question.

From your statements you almost assuredly have more experience than I in the biodynamic farming arena, but I have plenty of experience in the lighting arena and if UV light is the issue, then that issue can be overcome.

Here is a long ass tour of an indoor facility making the claim (perhaps your knowledge can debunk the claim where mine can’t).

Thanks for the exchange — happy to learn things.

They should change the name because if it’s not held in the emerald triangle how the fuck can they call it the emerald cup. Just a bunch of sellouts real weed growers don’t need all the hype to tell them that their weed is good. When it’s sold quick and buyers want more…I’d say that’s how you know it’s good

Ratings/Award marketing works. It will be no different as the cannabis legal market matures. Even Koenigsegg/Pagani/Bugatti market their products and no one is more exclusive in their market than that group. Sure Horacio Pagani sells all he can build and buyers want more, but marketing allows him to get a far higher price than otherwise.

We don’t gotsta like it, but it’s gunta happen. Can’t change human nature and marketing merely caters to it.

HELL LA?? LoL.. NOT… Eventho my Greatest great Grandfather ..was a historically noted Los Angeleno pioneer who helped build ..La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles.. The Church of Our Lady Queen of the Angels.. Know as La Placita Church in the Old Plaza…literally putting the roof on one of the oldest still standing buildings in Los Angeles..stepped out of his cultural comfort zone and married a beautiful Mexican Woman.. still is Not exactly where I want to live.. It is a great place to network though..

And whilst.. this is definitely a sell out move.. Humboldt and the Triangle has to make a name for itself if it wants to remain in the game.. and that involves networking and name recognition to a broader audience.. I mean it would be nice if things just stayed like the sameness forever.. but things just don’t always happen that way. It would be nice to not get completely RAILROADED on the way though!! Kinda a mixed bag in my eyes.. I just think the Triangle needs to reinvent its OWN Competitions..

Still gonna Broadcast BOYCOTTING HUMBOLDT BRANDS tho..until the county finds a way to check ..its way out of bonds ..POLICE STATE WEED!!

Nope, actually Willow, corporate cannabis failed to realize how much work goes into making a cannabis product. I guess they assumed you just put a plant in the ground and it will be shelf ready at a dispensary once it’s grown. They all got a rude awakening such as Kana Flow when they realized growing it is just a small part of producing a finished product. Why you aint hearing anymore about 500 a pound and true sales are well above 1k. Anyone who thinks grow’in weed is easy ain’t never grown beyond a few plants if any.

There’s a shit load of truth to this statement. There was a massive ignorance based disconnect which drove corporate weed to over-promise and under-deliver. Scaling is hard.

Don’t confuse this fact however with smart and experienced people doing what they need to get it right in the long run. Any thought otherwise is an disconnect of it’s own. The crap will step by step get swept away as experience and lowered production costs combine to up the quality and lower the costs.

In time.

I grow some really good herb. So does my neighbor and a few others on our side of the hill. We know some growers that have gone over to the dark side, lol. They grow some damn good herb as well. My neighbors and I spend 10 to 12 hours a day in the field cause that is what it takes.

Another disadvantage most legal corporate weed has is the 8-hour grower. I know this cause I am about to bring back home one of those lost souls. If your pre’96 grower the corporate growing environment is not ideal. I think you would admit to simple facts your hands are not on the plant as much as you would want and you are to busy with politics and infrastructure. So, yeah gonna be a long, long time.

Honestly, the most disgusting thing I’ve heard in years. The CUP was something that was for us it was our way that we celebrated and we’re quite proud to bring our stuff. Now within about 10 years it’s exploded into this Global supposed “entity” with a bunch of idiots doing dabs. It’s not the gathering that we had showing off our wares. It is not the being proud of each other and patting ourselves on the back. It’s turned into a Freak Fest somebody’s making money off of it and that’s all that matters at the end of the day. Very sad to see disgusting sell out. Say is it a coincidence that Tim says he can’t grow this year or have any farms on his property cuz there is no water? Cant grow… go for the stickers, t shirts and other branded gear!!!

Where’s the local capitalism to compliment the crop? Come on now. Get off the arse and market the triangle for tourism. Ya know. Tourists come to make connections and buy shit.

When we moved the Emerald Cup to Santa Rosa many of the Emerald Triangle folks said we were abandoning the community. Many farmers and product makers wouldn’t come down the first year at the fairgrounds. When they saw how well the vendors that did join us did, the next year almost everyone tried to get booths. Where is the best place for a farmer or product company from the triangle to promote themselves? Where is the best place for our contestants to get their awards? In the largest cannabis market in the world; which is LA. We’re doing this help promote sun grown cannabis, regenerative farming, and our community. We will still have the fall harvest celebration and give everyone the chance to connect with the community, the latest genetics and the best fresh flowers. To me it’s the best of both worlds.

All we ask is you drop “Emerald.” Call it whatever you wish but branding it as emerald is nostalgic to many of us pre-96 growers. I think the corporate ideology needs to pay attention. We are the majority of growers in the traditional market. We are not going away and it’s high time they start paying attention. There is a reason Med-men, Flow Kana and others have failed. Tim, we love and appreciate what you have done for the industry. Never forget though it’s our plant!

“Our plant”
The Hindu culture from Afghanistan to South East Asia cultivated “our plant” for thousands of years. They bred it and gave everyone the foundation we now have and have been improving on for the past 50 years in the triangle.
It’s everyone’s plant.

That being said, if it’s not a cup consisting only of entries from the triangle, and it’s not held in the triangle, it’s not the emerald cup anymore. You should call it the California cup or you might get a class action lawsuit for misrepresenting.

It’s like moving the Baja California event to Texas and calling it the Baja California. Not cool!

Tim: Hopefully things will change in time for your event, but currently, the City and County of Los Angeles do not allow events like the Emerald Cup. The closest venue that I’m aware of that does, is the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino. High Times held its cups there and there have been other cannabis events as well. It’s not a bad venue, and its very large but the problem is accomodations. There are simply not enough hotel rooms nearby to accomodate event workers and attendees. If this is where you plan to have the Emerald Cup, please let people know as soon as possible as people will need to book their rooms immediately.

Anyone visited a So Cal dispensary? You dont find Nor Cal product there as a rule. The Cup is crazy…categories WHACK. Nothing sun grown outdoor about rosins, vapes, solvents, dabs n gummies. Sorry the roots for Emerald Cup to even exist in the first place do not exist anymore. It’s a new beast. Pandora’s box comes to mind.

So LA is aggregating “the emerald triangle” now too?

Whos it encompass now? Humboldt, mendo, trinity, lake, sonoma, the bay, fresno, and now los angeles?

The only real reason for the emerald cup to move to LA is because there’s more coke down there.

I’m so damned confused, LOL! So a last gathering in April at Area 101 before it moves to LA in December, but entries for December start in April?? What’s going on?

Hi Kim. I’m surprised you published their canned PR statement, and didn’t write something a bit more journalistic–exposing their smokescreen. Clearly this outfit is not concerned with the local community, and are 100% in this for profit. This would be somewhat more acceptable, if they didn’t pitch things with all the bullshit about dancing bears, etc.

I’ll wait for the real story. Cheers. Thanks.

I came off two weeks of jury duty to a death in the family. I’m on survival mode.

Hey, I work for a sun-grown, organic, and regenerative brand that supports strictly mom and pop growers in and around the Emerald Triangle. But I live in LA. There is a massive need to educate folks in LA on the importance of all the good work the farmers up north are doing. It all started in the north, but we need to open peoples’ eyes down here so we can raise awareness and sell more high-quality products that focus on regenerative practices. I’m sure it will return north in 2023, but I welcome a year down here. I think a flip in perspective is in order.

I am Pastor Chris, Cannabis for Christ
I speak a blessing over this festival and any efforts to get the word out about Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity County bud, grown with God-given inputs and the most experience growers in the world.
The OG growers need help!
LA needs to know where to go to get the best God grown bud.
Lord willing I’ll be there and try to give away 700 joints straight from mindo reminding people to do all your cannabis for Christ
