UPDATE: Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:
On April 21, 2021, at about 7:12 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Hammond Trail Parking Lot near Letz Avenue in McKinleyville for the report of a robbery that had just occurred.
Deputies arrived at the location and contacted the 34-year-old male victim who exhibited minor injuries from the incident. The victim told deputies that he had fallen asleep in his vehicle when he awoke to two unknown male suspects physically assaulting him. The suspects removed the victim from his vehicle and demanded the victim’s wallet. At some point during the altercation, the suspects reportedly brandished a knife at the victim. The suspects stole personal belongings from the victim and then reportedly fled the area in a white SUV.
The suspects are described as follows:
- Suspect #1: A white male adult, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build, short hair and a clean-shaven face.
- Suspect #2: A white male adult, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall with a small build, a mustache and a beard.
The suspect vehicle is described as a white, possibly late-1990’s model SUV – similar to a Toyota RAV4 or Highlander- with Oregon license plates and an empty wheel mount on the back.
This case is still under investigation.

brush bums gone bad ?
Are you unclear on the “by two men who fled in a vehicle” concept?
The perps had “wheels”, not a shopping cart.
But by all means, blame it on the homeless, I’m sure just what they need is more stigmatism.
No brush bums. These were transient bums on the road and broke. Needed gas money to keep on truckin. Hopefully they will get caught before they find their next victim. We do have pretty good LE in the region so good chance they will be apprehended. Remember to keep those car doors locked at all times.
Correct, brush bums, transients, homeless….the continued degradation of society. People sleeping in doorways of businesses downtown or on the curb in the middle of the day. Transients living and destroying our greenbelts, trash accumulating all over town. I personally know of two incidents in Eureka where transients were defecating in alleys in middle of the day. This is out of control!
I have noticed that the window companies are very busy replacing windows in downtown Eureka that have been broken out randomly by the “night walkers” with nothing better to do. Also, an absolute explosion of fences going up around businesses, local fencing companies are probably 6-8 months out on jobs.
We need more programs, more taxpayers money going to help all these transients and homeless that do not want any of our help!
I watched a bum take a shit in the street outside of AAs in eureka last night literally across the street from the jail
Right dang, not sure if that spreads disease, but it’s definitely not helping.
Lol! But we all know parking lots and side walks are more sanitary locations to eat it at then a regularly sanitized restaurant! Covid does not like street poo i guess! The media told me so!
The recent plethora of public pooing is positively puzzling.
There is a particularly pernicious idea that, if people are vicious, self destructive or criminal, it’s because society has made them that way. You’d think that the natural conclusion to that piece of idiocy is that all people are naturally equally good but the same people who want to blame those who are not criminal, vicious or self destructive also hold forth on how those who object to the vicious, self destructive and criminal are inhumane, greedy and evil.
Right. No responsibility for their own choices to act badly. Enough is enough!
Defecating in public is common in third world countries 😉
And common in third world COUNTIES, such as Humbolt. Explains the excess outside poo in our area.
“Correct, brush bums, transients, homeless….the continued degradation of society”
Don’t worry Biden will fix it by bringing in the entire third world, many of whom are illiterate in there own language, and offer them free health care etc. Who gives a shit if they have covid, YOU need to put your mask on. That coupled with profligate spending on social justice programs and higher taxes on what’s left of our productive class will surely make us all better off.
They escaped in a white Toyota SUV, everyone. They don’t appear to be homeless. I am glad I have a dog that violent crooks would not want to mess with – I love that trail.
Crooks generally go for “low hanging fruit” like people walking on trails who are not likely to be armed—-except for me!
I wish punks like these would try this with me while I walk my mastiffs on the Hammond trail
And that’s a nice trail, a nice area, too. It’s getting crazy out there, 2 against 1, cowardly, terrible.
Bear spray!
What happened to the two stabbed and one killed in Arcata?
I am waiting to hear!
there is a little parking lot on Letz/Hammond Trail (i.e. very close to this assault) that I don’t park at cuz I’m afraid my car will be broken into while I am hiking or biking. I’m not surprised that motorized perps picked that spot to perpetrate.
It is troubling to me that the vast majority of the comments here are in agreement with my original statement above, yet we still continue to spiral down with degrading further our community (society). We all see it, we all are against it, yet we continue to think throwing more money (social programs, mental health officers, County health support staff, mediators, police social patrols, etc) more and more programs at this issue will make it better. But instead it gets worse, we know it is getting worse, just drive slowly and look.
The answer is tough love, you have to force the “night walkers”, the druggy transients, homeless into a shelter of some sort and clean them up and detox. Also, any program, ANY program they are part of where they are receiving something (money, food, etc,) they have to give something, no matter how small, back to the system that provided it.
