What is funny/sad about this type of accident is that both parties will honestly swear that they had the greenlight. Dash cams are really helpful in these situations.

Typical speeding and/or running red lights in Eureka. It’s a sport for the homicidal drivers of Humboldt. Second only to attempting to run down pedestrians (and often succeeding and then pleading “he stepped right out in front of me – in the crosswalk”). Sick town.

What’s just as sick as thinking you have an invisible shield because of a law. Personally I’d rather be alive than dead right…. like as a kid riding your bike and you’d hear a car, would you stay in the road? No you gtfo the way, because it’s a damn car!

The traffic lights all over Eureka are rather obnoxiously timed and I am sure that contributes to the increase in crashes. It would be helpful if our local media contacted the city traffic department and asked about how lights are programmed and why. If I had to guess they changed them to match some data-driven theory without any regard for the driver experience. Turn-lane lights such as are found at Myrtle & West or S and Buhne defy all logic.

Should copy the light at 5th and V. That is the last ‘northbound’ light in Eureka.
Almost always quick change. Almost no accidents at that light.
I think all the lights on 101 (4th and 5th) are programmed by CalTrans.
Seems like they did a pretty good job overall.

City streets… lights on H and I streets were set for 35 mph traffic flow.
City changed speed limits on those streets down to 30 mph and didn’t change the light timing.
Result, traffic still moves at 35 mph.

Don’t the traffic lights have cameras on them ?
If not, Why not.
Intersections are the most accident prone spots in town

Here’s a red light camera. Closest ones, Redding has a few… and some in San Francisco.

Santa Rosa put up quite a few at great expense, then discovered that they only had money left over to buy film for two cameras.

I remember when urban car crashes were “fender benders” because brakes were usually applied before the crash. Now people seem to be oblivious or distracted and don’t even hit the brakes. So, combined speed is higher.

I just love Willow Creek. Speeders are identified, tweakers are, well, identified. Homeless are in the bushes and come out at night. Not as nice as it used to be, but right is right and left is left.

I would really like to see a news feature in which, a couple of weeks or maybe months later, whenever insurance and cops have decided on the most likely story, we hear the explanations for these crashes. The rollovers are the most puzzling to me, but regular collisions at light-controlled intersections are confusing, too. Maybe once the legal and financial matters were decided, the involved parties would feel more free to tell the real story.
It would be especially good to hear the person at fault explaining their behavior: “Uh, i was trying to tell my friend in New York a joke and had to look something up to get to the punch line, when all of a sudden WHAMMM!!” or “It was weird, i thought i was in a Star Trek movie and all the lights were stars and everything was so peaceful and smooth when CRRRRAAASSSHHHH!” or “I was just trying to push the pacifier in the baby’s mouth in the back seat– when we found ourselves on the pavement,” or whatever.
Is there anyone available to do follow-up like this?

I like to know what happens because i try to avoid these situations, partly by predicting the behavior of other drivers. To know what thought processes led to previous crashes might help prevent future trouble.

Did you see that the truck just clipped the rav and sent it flying out of control? The person in the rav didn’t have a good enough grip otherwise they could have maintained direction. Plus the rav wasn’t stable enough. Think about that when buying a car.

Do recall that once upon a time cars were made with heavier metal and had hard chrome fenders. Now cars are constructed with lighter metal and various plastics so the car bodies aren’t so tough and things can bend and break more easily. This results in a different look to crashed cars. At the same time, I guess we as drivers and passengers are supposedly safer with airbags, padded dashes, seat belts, etc.

The bad driving is due to the lack of traffic enforcement. Some drivers get used to speeding, running red lights, turning left against red arrow signals, using their cellphone while driving, etc because there is little chance of being caught, let alone stopped.

Us law abiding citizens are left with defense driving techniques, and using dash cameras so if we are involved in a crash, we can show provide the video to our insurance company to prove it was not our fault.
