Birds of the Lost Coast Birds Lecture Series Starts April 20th

This is a press release from the Friends of the Lost Coast:

Calling all bird lovers! Friends of the Lost Coast, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, will present Birds of the Lost Coast, a free Zoom lecture series showcasing the amazing and diverse birds of our region. There’s something for everyone, with topics ranging from owls to seabirds to tips for beginning birders:

  • Owls of the King Range, April 20, 6-7pm, with wildlife biologist Russ Namitz: Explore the owl species  of southern Humboldt County, including their preferred habitat and the eclectic array of species-specific sounds.
  • Birding 101, May 4, 7-8 pm, with birder/photographer Ann Constantino: Learn the basic skills and tools needed to spot and identify birds, where to find birds in southern Humboldt and how to attract birds to your yard.
  • Seabirds of Humboldt County, May 18, 6-7pm, with Russ Namitz: Discover the pelagic and nearshore seabirds that visit our Humboldt waters and seabird adaptations that allow them to live and thrive in such an environment

Zoom links for the talks will be posted next month at  and on the Friends of the Lost Coast Facebook page.

The presenters bring experience and passion to their topics. As a teenager, Ann Constantino was enchanted by the herons, egrets and osprey she would see and hear along the Eel river. Her deeper interest in local birds was sparked when she discovered the Benbow Bald Eagle nest in 2012.

Russ Namitz began actively birding the summer after graduating from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He is a pelagic bird guide for Oregon Pelagic Tours and has surveyed for Spotted Owls for over 12 seasons. He has birded extensively around the world, concentrating in the Americas.

Friends of the Lost Coast has been inspiring people to preserve our natural home on the Lost Coast since 2000. For more information about programs, events, and volunteer opportunities visit  or check us out on Facebook.

In addition to stars, I also like birds. Saw my first grosbeak of the year this morning. Put a smile on my face.
