[UPDATE] Fire Closes One Lane of Hwy 299

wildland fire feature wildfireAbout 12:10 p.m., a fire was reported burning southeast of Willow Creek. By 12:33 p.m., the eastbound outside lane was closed as firefighters dealt with the flames.

We’ve requested more information from Six Rivers National Forest which is in charge of fires in that area but we have not heard back yet.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE: The fire was contained at ½ acre and is in the mop-up stage now. Caltrans QuickMap shows traffic is moving easily through the area.

I think we are in for a real bad fire season. People please be as careful as possible using an type of fire. BBQ’s, fire pits, etc., just one spark in dry tinder and it is of and running. I hope the Six Rivers National Forest Service people will nip this in the bud. Please be safe to all the firefighter’s on the line.

Lite cigarette butts, are still a big cause of road side fires.

True, and so are dragging trailer safety chains, and severely overheated trailer brakes.

I just left a job where the home owners were using indoor Romex wire for their solar system.
Wiring was exposed, just sitting on top of the ground in tall grass.
They had zero interest in digging a trench or putting it it in conduit.
Frustrating to see such ignorance and laziness after all of the fires we have had recently.

I’ve seen that… the outer jacket self-destructs fairly quickly, but the inner thhn seems to hold up surprisingly well. Of course, on the grass means it’s only a matter of time until a vehicle, lawnmower, plastic-craving rodent, etc goes right through that insulation… and solar panels with their constant current properties make really nice arcs.

It’s already so hot & dry. Time to start Rain Dances. Maybe once a week at the Community Park?
