CHP Releases Information on Fatal Crash on Hwy 299

CHP Fatality feature iconPress release from the CHP:

On Saturday, April 10, 2021, at 0814 hours, the CHP Redding Communications Center was advised of a solo vehicle traffic crash on State Route 299 near mile marker 29.20 in Trinity County. CHP Trinity River Area, Trinity County Sheriff, and Downriver Fire Department personnel responded and located a 1992 Jeep Cherokee overturned in the Trinity River, against the north shoreline. Fire personnel found the deceased 52 year old male driver inside of the Jeep.

It appears the driver was traveling west on State Route 299 at an unknown speed, and at an unknown time between April 9, 2021, at 2330 hours and April 10, 2021 at 0814 hours. For undetermined reasons, the driver allowed the right tires of the Jeep to drift onto the north dirt/ gravel shoulder and over corrected to the left. The Jeep crossed the eastbound lane and launched from the highway to the south. The Jeep landed on its front end, and overturned onto its roof in the water of the Trinity River near the north shore. The driver sustained fatal injuries as a result. It is not believed the driver used the safety restraints of the Jeep, and impairment cannot be determined at this time.

Any witnesses to the crash are encouraged to contact the CHP Trinity River Area office at (530) 623-3832.

Authorities are notifying family members now. This is so sad.
299 is a very beautiful but dangerous road. 100% consecration is demanded all of the time.
I have lost so many friends and one family member
Sorry for your loss.

Read this sad article earlier today. A terrible price to pay for over correcting your vehicle and it crosses the road and into the river. I was sorry to see that the driver was not using his safety equipment (seatbelt) for some reason. Just maybe if the seatbelt had been worn the driver might have survived the accident. But only God knows that for sure. Again, my condolences to the driver’s family and friends. RIP. Thank you to the CHP, Trinity County Sheriff, and the Downriver Fire Department for their work at that sad accident. You people are greatly appreciated!

299 really needs guard rails along that section between burnt ranch and junction city the roadway is so narrow with a cliff on one side and a long plunge to the river on the other

I drove by during the recovery. It was a straight stretch of highway and the vehicle was partially submerged upside-down. It’s doubtful a seat belt would have made a difference.

This kind of accident is the most common on 299. Right tire hits the soft shoulder and the driver yanks the steering wheel to the left. This puts the vehicle nearly perpendicular to the road and still traveling at speed. If you hit the shoulder just point yourself back towards the direction of travel…

I was a part of the Downriver FD, living at the cable slightly west of Big Flat at the time. Wondering if it was near Jamies claim or just where it was exactly ? There is a section of road that could be called straight, between the cable and big flat, possibly it was in that section. Not many rapids in that section and a lot of work was done by Caltrans on that section. Sorry for the family . Michael
