CHP Targeting Drivers on 101 With an Enhanced Enforcement Campaign Starting Today

public informationPress release from the California Highway Patrol:

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Northern Division and Golden Gate Division, having jurisdiction over the major transportation corridor of US-101 throughout northern California, are partnering to participate in a Major Corridor Enhanced Primary Collision Factor (PCF) Enforcement Campaign on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

This effort aims to reduce the number of injury and fatal traffic crashes on the major roadways throughout the two Divisions. In 2018 and 2019, a total 1,928 crashes occurred on US-101 from the Oregon border through Mendocino County, causing 745 injuries and killing a total of 53 people. The primary causes for most of the injury and fatal crashes were determined to be: speed, reckless driving, unsafe lane change, unsafe turning movement, following too close, distracted driving, and driving under the influence, with increased injuries and deaths from occupant restraint violations.

The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California. This includes the prevention of loss of life, injuries, and property damage resulting from traffic crashes through enforcement, education, engineering, and partnerships.

The CHP is promoting awareness and safe driving along this major corridor route. During the enhanced enforcement campaign, the CHP will target US-101 with increased traffic safety operations to educate and, if necessary, take appropriate enforcement action on drivers who violate traffic laws along this major corridor route.

“The US-101 corridor within Northern Division and Golden Gate Division represents a large portion of where traffic crashes are occurring,” said Northern Division Chief Greg Baarts. “Increased visibility, aggressive enforcement, and public education within the Areas along this corridor will contribute to increased safety for motorists travelling on US-101.”

The CHP reminds motorists to follow these basic traffic safety rules: always wear a seat belt, drive at a speed safe for conditions, eliminate distractions while driving, and always designate a sober driver.

“Enhanced Enforcement” should never end!

It’s a target-rich environment. And, it’s YOUR turn to pay some “speeding tax”…

Please, drive safely. Thanks!

Except that our tax dollars pay for the road, the chp, their studies to determine that we need to be further punished …

Not that they’re not needed but I’d like to see chp and caltrans experience enhanced enforcement of their own with a serious audit

Good luck, some of the newer high end cars that drive themselves automatically slow down when they pick up a radar signal, took me a couple times to figure out what was going on ,brakes right down to the speed limit ,then when out of range ,back on the throttle. Pretty cool sheet. Key, make sure the high end car you get blends in ,that is most important.

Are those number correct? That seems… way high. 53 fatal crashes on Hwy 101 in just Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendo Counties in just 2 years?

I guess if they are correct that would account for aggressive enforcement… but still… 53 fatals? I can recall maybe 15….

Thats neck and neck with Humboldt covid fatalities, we better shut 101 down now, put in speed bumps and install seatbelt checkpoints. Put in some toll boths and line the highway with radar assisted cameras so we can mail everyone a ticket for doing 56 mph, eating that hamburger, on the phone, brushing that hair. Then one last booth to take a blood sample to test for ANY kind of drugs, mediation etc. This pandemic has got to stop, one fatality is one too many.

Good, because I have been amazed about how many people can wreck and roll over their cars on wide, straight sections of road!
A lot of people drive like they are the only person on the road. Not giving a though to the car in front of them, beside them or the car coming up behind them.
Inconsiderate fools.

Sounds like a good thing that is overdue…Way too many inconsiderate, selfish and unsafe drivers…Increase the fine for using a cell phone, while operating a motor vehicle, to $5,000 for the first offense…

Whatever. The only people safe from the psychos driving 75-80 MPH in the “Safety Corridor” between Arcata and Eureka is the CHP. Because they are never there.

Took I-5 back home yesterday. The trucks we’re going 78 mph and the left lane was 80-90. Spooky stuff.
It’s unfortunate but lowering the speed limit is the only way a cop could find the speeders What ever happened to the air Hwy patrol.

Just maybe if they ever fixed the roads , the roads could handle higher speeds, however with the roads being some of the worst I have seen in 7 countries and the lower 48 I am surprised there aren’t more wrecks , bad road don’t just suddenly happen and the damage to vehicles over time creates a deadly combo.

J. It doesn’t matter how fast the flow, agreed
But that’s when the guy doing 90 gets passed by a car going 96 who’s passing a truck that has on his emergency blinkers on going up a hill. I guess you would of had to seen

How about they concentrate their efforts on HWY 199? So many deaths on that road!
