Press release from the Timber Heritage Association (THA):

Timber Heritage Association (THA), will be doing a rail right-of-way cleanup event on Saturday, April 3, starting at 10 am at the foot of T Street in Eureka.

The event’s goal is to remove overgrown plants and trash from the right-of-way from T Street across the Eureka Slough Bridge towards the former California Redwood mill site.

Rail cleanup organizer and Timber Heritage Association Board Vice President Sean Mitchell says “Clearing the right of way allows for Timber Heritage to be able to run our immensely popular Speeder/Crew Car Runs in the summertime; Covid-19 restrictions allowing. These cleanups happen throughout the year to ensure the rails are clear and safe for use.

One of THA’s future goals is to operate an excursion train around the bay, thus ongoing care and maintenance of the right-of-way through projects like this are incredibly important.” THA strategic planning efforts include increasing right-of-way clearing and cleaning activities like this one to ensure future “Rails With Trails” around Humboldt Bay.

In addition to clearing brush from the rails, right-of-way cleanups remove hundreds of pounds of discarded trash that could have ended up in Humboldt Bay or the ocean.

Humboldt Bay is the second largest estuary in California and an important stop on the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds, as well as an important sport fishing locale. Thus, trash cleanup helps protect vital local and nonlocal wildlife.

In the past, collaborators in rail cleanups have included numerous THA volunteers, CalFire, Recology, and the Eureka Police Department. Individuals or organizations interested in helping with this effort can contact Katie Buesch at [email protected]. Attendees, please bring a good pair of gloves and wear sturdy shoes.

The mission of THA is to preserve, interpret, and celebrate timber heritage in Humboldt County. Timber Heritage Association can be found online at https://timberheritage.org/, and through Facebook and Instagram.

I am already going to The Eureka Trash Bash. We meet at Vigo Street, near the In -N – Out at 8:45.
But it is good there is a clean up on that end too.

The unsung heroes here are the litterbugs. Without them none of this would be possible.

Yup. Taxpayers paid about $8 million for them to run their cars up and down that line.

What we inherited from the tempered bearings is it absolutely devastated environment and a past we should all be ashamed of.
