Humboldt County’s impact on the Governor Newsom recall effort

In the latest episode of Humboldt Last Week

I wanted to take a short look at some local data and information regarding the proposed recall election of California Governor Gavin Newsom, which is very likely to happen in October.

As of this posting California’s Secretary of State has verified 4,425 signatures from Humboldt County in favor of a recall, according to the effort. Statewide they believe the over two million signatures they’ve collected will be certified and reach the recall threshold of 1.5 million.

When it comes to Humboldt County in the 2018 election, Newsom earned 65 percent of the local vote, slightly above his statewide winning total of 62 percent.

California’s 2018 midterm election which elected Newsom scored the highest voter turnout since 1982.

If the recall receives a similar statewide voter turnout that it did in 2018, roughly 12 percent of voters would have to turn on Newsom. That would be roughly 1.5 million formerly Democratic voters wanting to turn the state red if the recall were to be successful.

As reported here by The Hill, a recent Emerson College poll found 42 percent of voters in California would vote to keep Newsom in office and 38 percent would vote to recall him.

The recall effort says Newsom failed during the pandemic destroying lives and businesses.

Those against recall are calling the efforts a partisan group of Republican anti-vaxxers, Q-anon conspiracy theorists, and anti-immigration Trump supporters.

The final local results from the 2020 presidential election indicate 21,770 or 32 percent of voters in Humboldt County chose Donald Trump compared to 44,768 or 65 percent of voters choosing Joe Biden.

I’m positive you’ll continue to receive updates on these developments via Redheaded Blackbelt.

Episode Description:

Violent and demeaning messages allegedly sent between at least two Eureka cops get national news coverage, Hulu is investigating a supposed local 1990’s cannabis-farm slaying by Bigfoot, a local look at Governor Newsom’s recall effort, a fifth of Humboldt County has had at least one COVID vaccine dose, locals again rise to help their neighbors, a localized shoutout from an NBA champ, the conversation about a proposed massive cannabis farm near Arcata continues, local Tribes are excited about recent federal developments, a trip to Fern Canyon is temporarily more difficult, an infuriating hit-and-run, the possibility of higher pay for grocery workers, historical items for sale, updates on accused murderers, and more.

Humboldt Last Week is Humboldt County’s news podcast brought to you in collaboration with Kristjana Graham Massage TherapyNorth Coast Co-op, Bongo Boy StudioPhotography by Shithe Candis Danielson recovery fund, NCJ, RHBB, and KJNY.

I notice those against the recall effort are reduced to denigrating the 2+ million Californians who signed onto the recall effort. If they had any actual valid arguments in support of the Governor, they would have used them. Instead we get ad hominem attacks.

And what valid arguments do the pro-recall people have against the anti-recall people?

I don’t have any particular like for newsom, especially with his ignoring covid restrictions, but I suspect he’s better for the state and society than any alternatives we’re likely to get.

Your inability to recognize the bigger play isn’t surprising.

It’s why our country’s manufacturing had been shipped overseas.

It’s why the billionaire class keeps raiding pension funds across the nation.

It’s why ivy leagues graduates are schooled in the art of slash and burn corporate mentality.

It’s why bleeding hearts believe it’s okay for a man to dress like a woman and teach kids drag queen story time.

It’s why the second at HHS can vocalize his/her desire to put minors on puberty blockers and administer hormones with off label use.

It’s why this nation is growing into an socialist shit hole, because leftists are being funded by China , soros, and, other Anti American factions.

It’s why people are so fucking blind to how the powerful control your lives.

It’s why the demoralization campaign against independent minded people is allowed to happen, because weak, and cucked people can censor and Shame from behind the pedophilled soaked control branch.

The point would be the pro recall people do not have anything against the anti recall people at all- they oppose a politician’s actions, and are willing to put their opinions about him to the test by asking their fellow citizens to vote. It’s the opposite apparently for anti recall people, according to your comment- they have no good opinion of the politician but think they are voting against their fellow citizens.

Donald Trump and Co. “failed during the pandemic destroying lives and businesses” by refusing to acknowledge the severity of the virus, downplaying the knowledge and wisdom held by epidemiologists world wide over, and doing very little, too late to support temporarily closed businesses and organizations while still chopping tax rates for the obscenely wealthy and bringing in massive profits for themselves. While I’m not a fan of Newsom’s neoliberal political stances on most things, to place blame for anything corona virus related on the governor is a fallacious distraction from what’s listed above. Right leaning folks have been petitioning to recall Newsom since before corona virus and as a gun owner, the most prevalent reason I’ve seen all along is that folks feel their so-called 2A rights are being attacked. Let’s not pretend this really has anything to do with his handling of the pandemic.

TDS. Do you really think that if the President didn’t act, everyone is helpless to act? California legalized non cooperation with the Trump Administration on illegal immigration and emission standards, apparently with great success. Frankly any effort Trump put into early covid-19 restrictions were equally successfully opposed by States like New York and California in knee jerk political reactions and they share the blame for political cowardice that people like to heap all on Trump.

The Federal Government has far greater access to resources, influence, and subsequent power than Newsom and the state of California. Also, regarding states taking actions that run counter to those of the Fed Govt, when doing so, the state is faced with threats of funding withdrawal- essentially sanctions.

How can you assert that “Frankly any effort Trump put into early covid-19 restrictions were equally successfully opposed by States like New York and California in knee jerk political reactions” when from the get go, Trump and Co. denied the dangers of Covid 19?

“Just months later, in late January, Newsom suddenly lifted the order, saying that declining case growth meant the policy had worked.

The evidence suggests otherwise. When Newsom lifted his order, hospitalizations and deaths were both substantially higher than when he had issued it, and the state’s COVID data portal showed that ICU capacity in Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley was close to 0 percent. You do go on and on. And no amount evidence that Trump was pretty much no worse than just about everyone else will ever change your mind. What is being said is that no leadership in the US, Democrat or Republican, was interested in preparing for a pandemic. They were too busy, as you are, in fighting over politics.

The one difference is that Trump actually did something useful. He used the government to subsidize vaccine research and development. And placed pre development orders so that the US is in better shape than the EU, Canada or Mexico for vaccine availability. Despite Democrat knee jerk opposition, Trump is responsible for that, which is a real, tangible fact showing that your beliefs he didn’t take the pandemic seriously are wrong.

Anti Trumpets choose constantly to repeat their own paranoid thinking as if it was real when it’s not. Could Trump have done better? Yes. Could he have done better if he was not surround by snarky pettiness and resistance of the anti Trumpers and press? Also yes. Could the message massagers who hate him done better? Not likely when the state of the places they controlled like New York, California, etc.

You think you know that Trump was the problem but it’s unbalanced Anti Trumpets who are the enemies of rational policies. They never bother to look further than their hate for answers. They assume with no evidence the superiority of their hate and refuse to take any resonsibility for their part in spreading misinformation out of sheer political posturing. In the end, once Biden has renamed the vaccine program, they will happily forget any inconvenient truths that they mightily foster the divisions that lead to deaths.

As Kym says about every liberal she supports but refuses to accept responsibility for- I don’t like Trump but he was just better than the alternative.

The real president (in exile) did nothing you describe. The scamdemic is just that. You drink the Koolaid of the left, therefore you buy into whatever they hate. This simple flu would have gone away with the usual herd immunity. Instead, we get genetic engineering cocktails that have killed over 1000 Americans so far (see the CDC’s own statistics). I’m sorry the real president was coerced into this absurdity and he should never have declared a “national emergency.” Gruesome Newsom is a socialist and needs to be recalled for that reason alone. He is also a hypocrite, like all the other Demonrats when it comes to not wearing masks, etc. Swiftboat Kerry anyone? How about the journalists going mask free when they cover the puppet fake president? It’s all there in videos and photos posted online. This scamdemic – and these socialist pig dogs – serve at the feet of the globalists who want to bring America to its knees. This is a republic (not a democracy, thank God) and Americans are guaranteed liberty (as well as the right to bear arms in defense of that republic). Anyone who hates liberty (all Marxists, including 90% of Demonrats) needs to be kicked to the Canadian border. FREEDOM over scamdemics!

Biden called him a killer, which he is, and Republican’s heads exploded and now they can’t praise the totalitarian “president” Putin enough. Why don’t all you trailer seditionist all move to Russia and see how cool Putin is?
Trump lost but the big baby and his Cult can’t accept reality. Too bad. Flying flags just didn’t get the job done. Maybe with all the voter suppression bills the GQP are pushing you may get a chance in 2024, the GQP admitted that when voters turn out, Republicans lose. Gotta cheat to hold onto power. Pathetic.

Pandemic related issues are left to the states that deal with. The CDC can only issue recommendations and the Executive branch’s only recourse is to restrict travel. The states are the ones with the powers to enact mandates on their constituents. The federal government has little to do with any of it. It’s called “separation of powers”, we learned about it in 8th grade. The people blaming President Trump are only projecting their state’s failure onto a politician they don’t like, instead of placing the blame on their own state governments where it truly belongs, perhaps because they don’t want their Democrat governors to look bad. Trump allowed states to lock down as much or as little as they want and provided far more aid than Biden has. Just ask Ilhan Omar, she was upset that Democrats are unable to provide as much aid as President Trump, and they hold power in both the executive branch and legislature, so they have to own it.

The 2nd amendment is not a so called right. It is a constitutional right, which is the law of the land. Nancy Pelosi and XIbiden laughed at the virus, called Trump a Xenaphobe for stopping flights here from China, While Nancy was laughing and saying to go to China town for dinner, at the beginning of the virus. Biden said he had a plan, talked all about his plan to beat this virus, yet when he got into office, the stupid had no plan. Meanwhile, Trump, who is responsible for saving lives with operation warp speed, and by the time XIbiden was inaugurated, barf, Trumps team was doing a million shots a day. Now the idiot Biden is letting thousands of infected illegals in, and will not let the press into his nazi holding sites. If there was nothing wrong, he would have showed them already. I think these sites should be infiltrated by the press, in secret, and put the report on the air. It has to be a mess. We are not Qanon fans, think they are missing links, like Antifa and BLM. And yes, our gun owner rights are being attacked, wish this was run like Texas, they have it down. But they have tornados.

Lol, Trump flubbed the pandemic response big time. Remember, it was a hoax . Malaria drugs and bleach. Don’t wear masks. Knew in January, did nothing. 15 cases and it’ll be gone. Warp speed did not pay for the development of the vaccine , it’s been in development before Trump was even President. Held back PPE. Turned down vaccines. The most pitiful response to a crisis, but that’s Trump. He sure had time for golf and rallies. He’ll go down in history as the laziest apathetic president in history.
Meanwhile, he’s facing a tsunami of legal battles because of his corruption, grift and illegal acts.
Love how all the Trumpers are rewriting history.

The net effect of Humboldt County on the “recall”, would be entirely “negligible”…

The recall may come to a vote, and then it will fail.

This effort is a disgusting waste of energy and resources, just like the effort to discredit the C-19 vaccines, the effort to promote the idea that abortion is a sin, and the notion that Trump was somehow not legally tossed from his throne…

Many political campaigns are pretty silly, but recalling Newsom, at this point, is about as likely as little green men landing in front of Mayor Seaman’s office and energizing her to actually accomplish something, during her term…

If you want to recall someone, try Rex Bohn, Michelle Bushnell, Kim Bergel, Virginia Bass and your very favorite sparkly Mayor, because none of them are sensible, competent, or fit for office!

Thanks! Namaste!

I guess all Republican mayors and senators should be recalled across the nation fo having the same problems.
When Americans get tired of electing politicians, on both sides, that are beholden to corporations and doners , them maybe we can see the changes we need.
In the meantime, infrastructure, education, health care, addressing drug addiction and raising the minimum wage get short shrift.
The military budget, which both sides vote for is obscene, corporate subsidies are obscene. Get corporations and religion out of politics and both sides will be if it.
Oh, and get rid of that blatant obscene tax break for the rich that the Republicans passed.

Having to hold down 3 minimum wage jobs to barely survive isn’t gonna cut it. Who voted unanimously against raising the minimum wage and does every time it comes up? Republicans. Why? They only care about their corporate doners, not their constituents. Why people vote for politicians that don’t care about them is beyond me.
It’s all about sticking it to the Libs, even to their own detriment. Sad.

You don’t know a things about gov’t. Recall is a right left to the people to create a check on the executive branch by the people. It’s in our Constitution. It’s a perfectly legal right that people may exercise if they feel an opportunity levers official no longer represents them. You are either are totally uninformed about the way gov’t works or purposefully trying to sow discord through false statements

Recall is part of the people’s check on the executive branch. It’s in the Constitution, it’s so the people have the ability to recall an elected official who no longer represents them. It is one of the most powerful checks in our gov’t and should be used more. Please stop before you appear any less informed than you already do.

Forget Newsome, let’s get Biden replaced first. It’s a travesty what he’s done at the border. Only thing he does real well is print money and what was up with him flopping around on the steps of Air Force one? Not very presidential IMO. Trump missed a handrail at a rally and it was headlines for weeks after.

Might as well make Putin the Chairman of the Republican Party.

1911, There’s a difference between impeachment and removal. The House of Representatives sends articles of impeachment to the Senate (That happened to Trump twice) Then the Senate decides if they should remove him. Twice the Senate decided not to do so. https://www.senate.gov/about/powers-procedures/impeachment.htm

He was actually convicted but the Senate chose not to remove him. The rules are the rules, Trump was acquitted, not guilty, therefore articles of impeachment were brought against him, but he was innocent, so he was not impeached. The second time around was after elections, so it was actually a Democrat controlled Senate, and they still couldn’t find evidence to impeach him. Tell yourself whatever you like in your head but it is what it is. Check out that link of Kym’s, it’ll explain everything to ya

Exactly. There will be Democrats and Republicans running in the recall, to say it’s only Republicans is not just completely wrong, it’s stupid. There are many Democrats I know who have signed the recall effort because they want someone new. They are definitely voting for a Democrat candidate to replace Newsome, not a Republican one. This is actually a hugely bipartisan effort, mostly based in Southern California where the lockdowns have been extremely aggressive, to recall a complete clown

Are the lockdowns and restrictions in southern California really that much worse than here in northern California.
I live in supposedly conservative northern California and can’t imagine restrictions and lockdowns being much worse than what we’ve been subject to over the past year with no end in sight and no signs of them ever going away.
If southern California is really a lot worse I can’t even imagine.
Must be so bad that not even tyrants like Hitler, Stalin and Mao would subject their citizens to, as the lockdowns and restrictions here in supposedly conservative northern California have been what you’d expect to see in hardcore communist dictatorships like China or North Korea.

Indeed…I think I remember that the 2016 presidential election had revealed that MANY of us are sick and distrusting of most slick politicians. I’m disgusted that Newsom and other liberals paint everybody who signed the recall as right-wingers, Repubs or crazies. It’s just more disrespect shown to the electorate who followed the democratic process of recalling an unwanted governor. We resist- they insult us. We try to get peaceful change- they misrepresent and mock us. They must be very scared! I would vote against any politician who chooses to do this to decent people of either side (and I have been a DEM my whole life)

I signed it over the assault weapons and mag ban. Many people, im not going to say myself, tried to register the weapons legally and the state system wouldn’t allow it in the timeframe making people into felons for their legally acquired property. And ending the grandfathered in magazines was at best left of legal property signed by newsom. It looks like after 2 years and lawsuits maybe the state will be forced to let you do want “they claimed” you were supposed to do. That’s not why most people signed it but it was good enough for me. It’s very simple to sling mud at the people who want to recall Newsom, but keep in mind that if you’re slinging the kind of mud which was described in the article above then you’re very, very, very likely a partisan Democrat. The main push behind this recall effort may be issues related to the pandemic, but the recall petition predates the pandemic entirely. This means that there are other issues at hand, such as Newsom’s push to see a proposed project go ahead in Huntington Beach, completely ignoring the legitimate environmental concerns about said project.

It doesn’t help that the birthday boy from that notorious birthday dinner that showcased Newsom’s “do as I say, not as I do” approach to governing during the pandemic was a lobbyist who was actively working to promote this environmentally harmful project to Newsom.

He’s incompetent at best, and downright corrupt at worst. Either way he is unfit to govern California. A recall election doesn’t mean that those opposed to Newsom’s governorship have to vote Republican (as the article above states), that is a complete falsehood. Replace him with a more competent Democrat, which is the likely outcome of a recall anyways.

Do we give every politician with a shit-eating-grin and a Democratic Party membership card a pass? Or should the actions of Newsom speak louder than his partisan affiliation?

Multiple things can be true. Governor Newsom was generating heat before the pandemic. His performance, compared to other state governors, has been suboptimal. Those in support of the recall aren’t going to win with a Republican candidate.

Which means the success of the recall is dependent on the success of Antonio Villaraigosa, who likely is going to jump into the race as the Democrat representative. Whether he is an upgrade from Gavin Newsom, who knows? But Mr. Villaraigosa is from a big market (LA) and has political constituencies to work with to be competitive.

Obama-era officials return to White House worth millions

White House financial disclosures show several officials gained massive wealth. As several Obama-era officials return to the White House under President Joe Biden, their reunion comes with fuller pockets and deeper ties to corporate interests, new financial disclosure reports show.

According to ABC News’ analysis of the most recent disclosure reports, many of Biden’s top White House officials, including Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Domestic Policy Council Director Susan Rice, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, and coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients, have substantially multiplied their wealth over the past few years.

Rice, who is among the wealthiest members of the Biden White House team, dramatically increased her wealth since her previous White House job during the Obama administration, reporting between $36 million and $149 million in various assets in her new disclosure filing released Saturday morning.

There are differences worldwide in how effective responses to the pandemic have been, but they seem more culturally than politically driven. My take is that the individuated cultures we refer to as “the West” are not producing enough of the conscientious traits that facilitate an effective social response to the pandemic.

Maybe instead of thinking it is a Newsome thing maybe look at it as a Democratic thing. California is one of the largest economies in the world, definitely the largest in our nation. Our income tax rate is in the top 3 of our country, we pay sales tax on top of that which also ranks in the top 5, our gas taxes are in the top 3. The cost of housing is in the top 3. Yet, our schools rank in the bottom 10. Our roads suck, they are in a total state of disrepair, our newest dam Oroville, almost failed sending 200,000 people fleeing our salmon are about to go extinct. We let illegals in and give them the full run of the place. Free medical will even protect the criminals from deportation and give people safe places to shoot up. All of this under democratic leadership. This state has been run into the ground under democratic control for the better part of 70 years. Frankly, I blame the democratic party for the condition of our state. I wish all you democrat would see that you are all being played for fools!

Is It a Border Crisis? Two-Thirds Say Yes, and Most Voters Blame Biden

Monday, March 22, 2021

The White House has spent weeks denying that the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border should be called a “crisis,” but two-thirds of voters say it is a crisis.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 67% of Likely U.S. Voters say the current situation with migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border is a crisis. Twenty-three percent (23%) say it’s not a crisis and 10% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

12 percent of voters turning on Newsom? It’s possible but requires liberal Democratic voters, those who don’t like Newsom’s COVID response, and apolitical voters. If you can get most of the 20% of Democrats who are unsure to support the recall, it’s a sure win. However, the news media bias, ads, lack of any prominent Democrat or celebrity running, and timing of the election at fall makes it more difficult to have the recall succeed unless there is another lockdown from COVID variants.

However, there’s definitely going to be Democrats and maybe non voters who will vote for the recall. Some people will remember how they closed outdoor dining when officials said that “it was completely safe.” And young extroverted non voters will vote because they were unable to go out or see their friends and play sports because things were closed. A few liberal voters will vote because they didn’t like how there was enough aid to people and businesses or equity with the vaccine going to disadvantaged and minority communities earlier. It’s probably going to be be 4-8% who will switch and the recall will likely get 42-48% support.
