[UPDATE Saturday] Video Captures Car Plowing Into Woman and Speeding Off

A surveillance camera mounted at a local residence caught a vehicle striking a woman and then fleeing the scene tonight at the intersection of West Hawthorne and Pine in Eureka about 9:12 p.m.

“We could hear it,” said Ash Underhill who along with her boyfriend Matt Derry owns the surveillance camera. “We heard a thump. We ran outside and saw a silver Nissan Pathfinder tearing down Pine. There was a homeless woman injured in the street.”

According to Derry, her boyfriend, the car went past a male in a wheelchair then turned a corner and struck the homeless woman. That makes it worse, he told us. “The [driver] is aware of people in the street.”

He said watching the video “is pretty brutal.” He explained, “The car slows down on West Hawthorne and then turned on to Pine and hits her. Her head hits the window. She flies through the air and lands on the ground. [She] bounced…The car was there for another second and then fled on Pine Street.”

Underhill repeated, “They backed up and go around her and then sped off.”

Meanwhile, Underhill said, a neighbor who was outside saw the whole incident and followed on foot. “He ran down the street barefoot trying to catch the guy,” she told us.

The injured pedestrian was sitting up when Underhill and Derry got there. They brought her a blanket and soon an ambulance arrived to take the woman to the hospital.

“I really hope they catch this guy,” Derry said.

“I can’t imagine them not getting caught,” Underhill told us.

The two provided Eureka Police with the video and hope that law enforcement may be able to gather details that lead to the arrest of the driver.

UPDATE 10:57 a.m.: A reader suggested that the vehicle looked more like a 2009 Hyundai Tuscon without the optional fender flares. Here is a photo of that Make and Model.

UPDATE Saturday: A non-official source tells us the woman “had no broken bones but is sore.”

It doesn’t look like they went around her. It looks like they ran her arm or something else over at the end. You can see her legs go up trying to get out of the way. So disgusting. I hate this shit ass city.

Re, “I hate this shit ass city” …

Then focus on the couple who went to the pedestrian’s aid and gave her a blanket. And focus on the neighbor who ran down the street barefoot trying to catch the driver. There’s that Eureka, too.

Humboldt is like any other place in the US — it’s a mix of good samaritans and assholes. I’ve lived in 10 different states in all regions of the country and it’s the same thing everywhere just slightly different styles and accents. The only thing unique to Humboldt is its relative isolation close to mega-metropolitan areas which encourages a slightly higher proportion of eccentrics. And of course our open encouragement of black market weed and an extra-large portion of stoner culture.

Still, there’s a lot of good people here mixed in with the assholes.

You’re absolutely right. I personally KNOW some good people that live in eureka, but that whole town has a terrible aura of what I would refer to as “creeping death.” I’ve previously lived in two houses in eureka and you cannot pay me to live there. The trash, needles, mentally ill homeless, and constant levels of petty theft and vandalism are all there in plain view. The drug houses and shootings are increasing every day. I don’t know what the solution to this is, but it wasn’t to dismantle the “devil’s playground.” That just caused a diaspora from eureka and made every other town in the area suffer. Now there’s people sleeping in tents on the sidewalk in Arcata and more trash in every greenbelt from fields landing to clam beach. Every time I visit eureka it’s looking more and more like Oakland. And there’s multiple reasons that I don’t live in Oakland…

After 12 years and much soul searching, we are on our way out within the next few months. This county and town has become a total wasteland. My family has been here for 4 generations. It is so upsetting with what this place has become. A feeling of total and genuine lack of safety and opportunity for our kids who were born here (i.e. no real medical offices, high crime (petty and violent), substance abuse and homelessness, county officials who are negligent in their work, the list goes on). It has taken its toll on us and are so tired of fighting. I am so sad with what has become of our county. Being a foster parent up here is what has totally opened our eyes and we will not be able to see the gross misconduct at the hands of the those in the county and even those in the community. There is so much more I can say, but won’t. We will miss our neighbors and the beauty, but its time to move know to a more productive area.

Free, right. Dismantling the devils playground without giving that group a place to go did not do the area any favors. In Oakland it’s more crime for money, though I don’t condone crime, but at least that’s understandable, but in certain areas, of eureka, there’s just a meaness but for no reason, not about money, just about being mean. In this instance, it’s basically impossible to run over a pedestrian in a 30 mph zone in the first place unless the driver just doesn’t care, and then to run her over again and not pull over, just terrible.

Eyeball,
right, a person brought forth the video, another brought a blanket, somebody tried to catch the driver.
there are a lot of good people in eureka, probably more good than bad, but it’s just the few that are really bad, and for no particular reason. In this instance, where was the car going? Were they hurrying to work at 9p, probably not. Was there any reason for them even to be driving around? What were they doing out there that was so important they had to drive impaired or distracted and hurt that lady and not call it in?

No, homicidal drivers are the majority. I have been a daily pedestrian in Eureka for well over fifteen years. This attempted murder is standard. All you have to do is watch 4th or 5th, H or I, Harris or Broadway for fifteen minutes. I challenge all you apologists for homicidal drivers to do this. If you have guts you will plant a chair for thirty minutes. You will see DOZENS of speeders, red light and stop sign runners, and at least one pedestrian nearly hit. I lived in L.A. for years and never saw any of this.
Now, why is this? Simple. The general lawlessness of a liberal/druggie county. You have weed shops on every corner downtown. You have dudes sucking on bongs driving in traffic (seen this many times). You have drug dealers every few blocks (depending on the neighborhood) and grow houses are legion. POP does nothing compared to the numbers (you read about raids here, but there are far more evildoers than raids and when I submitted a form about a grow house on my own block it was IGNORED). Generally, you see teens (and many adults) in gangster attire, raised by dope-smoking parents and video games/trash TV. You see pre-teen girls dressed like big city hookers. And do I have to mention all the parasitic fatties shopping for junk food at Winco while sucking disability money every month?
So, we have a general destruction of American culture by leftist drug users and you are surprised there are hit and runs and home invasions and assaults domestic violence all over this county. Google heroin overdoses per county, folks. Humboldt is in the top five for the whole freakin’ country. This is unsurprising in county’s that allow rampant legal and illegal growing and cops who hug antifa instead of arresting them as domestic terrorists. White males over 40 are the enemy, instead, and (non)white cops who make fun of chunky citizens are pure evil.
You made this place, libs. Welcome to your Klownworld.

How many times have we all had to stop abruptly and spill our $6 latte and just watch a zombie just wander into traffic?
Maybe the zombies “homeless pedestrians” should wear something besides urine soaked dirty dark clothing and pay attention to their surroundings instead of being drunk or high.
As far as not stopping the drivers realized they are a more valuable citizen than the zombie and made the executive decision to carry on their evening without causing a lot of paperwork for the outstanding police officers of Hum Co.
Honestly the world would be a better place to put these zombies to work right next to prisoners making license plates and prison blues.
If ya want to be a vagrant and make property values plummet and shat on the sidewalks got to the work camp and have shelter food and job.

Sorry y’all have a hard time with sarcasm…Lol
Y’all too sensitive and woke to read between the lines.

So to fix this vagrant homeless population that’s the scourge of the entire country what do we do..

Have you ever heard of “not in my backyard”?

Everyone wants to help but nobody wants to be anywhere near these camps or whatever ya want to call them.

I’ve bought cars, travel trailers, tents and over payed for general labor to help people. Yes I needed work done and needed a breathing standing upright person to do that. Guess how 99% of those situations turned out?

I’m related to a family that has no firewood and all are able bodied healthy adult folks with senior age high school boys offered them to come to my place (I’m picking them up mind you since they can’t drive) and cut split firewood on my property as much as they needed no strings attached.
The powered log splitter, chainsaws and fuel sitting right there next to multiple log truck loads of seasoned hardwood and a flatbed truck to load the wood on all for free. They just had to Say “yes thank you Let’s do it” but they just complain how tired they are lol from what they don’t work or anything just smoke weed all day
… and they can’t even grow weed which I tried that with them years ago bought them soil plants food everything and they still managed to screw that up.

Sorry I’m not that compassionate anymore after years of living in a shitty little hick town surrounded by drug addicts and vagrants being the thing that people see when they pass thru. Businesses boarded up piles of homeless staking out the town as theirs because we go to jail for spraying them with a garden hose for not moving when I’m trying to open my restaurant.
How about the time when I got the stern talking to by the police after a homeless drunk kept breaking into my bar through this tiny little window and would drink the well alcohol nasty cheap shit and passed out in the booths on multiple occasions I would open the restaurant and have to wake him up and tell him not to do it again.
I zip tied him one day and called the police e after many many times being nice to ol’ George this time I called the cops on him.

Turns out ol’ george has more rights than me in this upside down lawless society. I could have been charged with kidnapping and holding him against his will.
Where’s his charges for breaking and entering, trespassing and theft on multiple occasions?

Spot on Steven Seagull. The part about the $6 latte indicated to normal people that your original commentary was sarcastic. Normal people also understand that truths are said in jest. However, liberals are not normal. They are hyper sensitive and easily triggered. They seek every opportunity to virtue signal and show you how moral they are. So moral that they want to scream it out loud and banish you from even thinking, much less speaking.
The reality lies in your second commentary. Many people today are just lazy pieces of shit who want to rely on others. Every single person in this comment section has slammed their brakes, almost hitting some non caring, fuck society, drug addled piece of shit in the middle of the road in Eureka. The car in the video had just missed another “pedestrian” in the middle of the street. Seconds later, hit someone else and probably hauled ass, scared. We all understand that it was wrong and disturbing to watch. So spare us the virtue signaling sermon libs. We all know how virtuous you are.

Yeah, the zombies on Broadway are particularly dangerous at night. Most people would call it suicidal or a lack of common sense, or some little fit they have expecting society to come to a stop for them on what is essentially a highway.

In this case though, I would lean more towards it being distracted driver hitting someone. It did look like this person was at least trying to use the intersection “crosswalk” area, unlike many who just cross whenever or wherever they want.

You sir are more of the problem in this country than the homeless themselves. Your callous dehumanizing and overgeneralization soaked in $6 latte privilege is exactly the perspective that allows cyclical poverty to be acceptable in our society, placing blame on people for what class they were born into and locking people in poverty for life.

Regardless of your disgusting attitude toward the homeless, your theory clearly doesn’t apply here based on the evidence in this video and witness encounters. This woman was already in the middle of the road crossing, corner to corner which is completely legal. She is easy to see and clearly didn’t jump out in front of the driver, GTFO with your condescension. The driver cut the corner so bad they’re on the wrong side of the road! Had they been driving safely and taken the time to be on the correct side of the road when turning, even if they hadn’t seen her chances are they might not have even hit her. But go ahead and blame the victim for being a pedestrian and being poor. If this were your mother I doubt this would be your reaction.

Humans are humans regardless of social or class status. Nobody deserves to be treated like this or have this happen to them. NOBODY. I wouldn’t even wish it on someone like you.

Looking at the video, the victim was wandering in the street having never been on the side walk or in an area that would be considered an unmarked crosswalk. There was plenty of wrong on the pedestrian’s side. But any negative behavior on her part does not excuse the driver from leaving the woman in the street after hitting her. If others had not come to her aid, which was the drivers duty, the driver would have been responsible if someone else hit her while she was lying in the street.

Actually looks like the person walking is highly intoxicated stumbling around at night drunk. Doing what? Going to the store for more booze. Steven seagull has his own rightful opinion. He doesn’t feel sorry for people that don’t care about themselves let alone the rest of the world. If other people feel so bad move the bums to your house then. The driver was obviously distracted because of the other bum in wheelchair rolling down the street he had to avoid most likely intoxicated as well in the street illegally in the dark of night. DUI for wheelchair. Drunk in public for other bum. Its a law for a reason. The driver should have stopped though. What happened to freedom of speech. When media is controlled by a certain type of people then they control what the people say that ruins what this country is built on which is freedom. When you do that then it’s done back to you. Let the idiots talk and give there opinion then you can give it back that whats fair. Everyone is scared to say what they feel nowadays and that’s not American.

No duh it’s bad everywhere, but anyone who has lived elsewhere can tell you the ratio of good to bad is VERY off in Humboldt. It is absolutely a garbage fire of unethical people if you compare it to other counties/states. People that aren’t brainwashed into egotistical d bags can tell how high the percentage is of unethical people live there. You can go to big and small towns online newspapers and scroll through the comments. You’ll never see anything as unethical as the commenters on Humboldt news. Humboldt is different than the majority of other places. Usually there are “good” and “bad” neighborhoods. Here they mix even down to a residence by residence level. In the end, it seems to be that there is less social judgement going on here than in places where people draw the lines more strictly. More of a true “live and let live” philosophy rather authoritarian.

Which has it’s good and bad sides. It is more open for alternative behavior which is a very lively environment in which to live but is correspondingly less able to restrain especially aggressive bad behavior too.

Actually it’s not bad everywhere. Have you lived in a large city in Europe? Humans being humans? Really? Maybe you’ve digested too much social media and think this is the new ‘normal’, it’s not. There are cities around the world with millions of more people than Humboldt has a whole that don’t have the problems Humboldt has. Amerika is off the rails, enjoy your so called patriotic freedom and keep using your freedom of speech to whine about it.

Yes, I have lived in major cities in both Europe and Asia. And yes, they have been different both physically and in society. But the difference between various places overseas and America is less than the difference between one place in the US and another. There is generally more uniformity in people and apparent extreme poverty more confined to “others” like Roma or Middle Easterners. And yes, there are European ex-pats who find America more congenial than their native places too.

Young person texting is my guess also. Was talking to a young acquaintance last year, just 20 years old, bragging about that they text and turn the radio up and have some non-alcoholic drink when they drive. It’s like they have no concept of the dangers of distracted driving, like they don’t even know they are doing anything wrong.

I’m out of here soon.

^By my eye it’s a Kia Sorrento, no need to look for Pathfinders.

Errors on all sides here. It was dark, people were wearing dark. Driver was probably paying more attention to having to pass the wheelchair which was in the middle of the road. Probably rear-view mirror watching him wondering why he wasn’t on a sidewalk. Victim was staggering and outside of the crosswalk area. People running out yelling nd the driver may be panicking, or under the influence, not paying attention, or whatever but should have at least parked in a safe area and call 911.

The driver didn’t even look in their rush. That much is clear. They were all the way in the wrong lane of traffic trying to cut that corner tight. People, slow down and pay attention. Your three seconds aren’t worth someone else’s safety.

Good point the driver was in the wrong in part of the video.

Look at the video again. Not only was the driver in a hurry, but clearly made the turn incorrectly. The car stopped on top of the wide white line indicating the stopping point for cars going in the other direction. The car did not turn into the correct lane and by ‘cutting’ the corner, struck the pedestrian. I am surprised no one has mentioned this.

Absolutely correct. It appears the driver was actually going to go straight ahead. At the last minute the driver turns left directly into the woman, who was not in the road, but crossing it, and the driver turned sharp and fast enough to end up in the other lane. Then the driver backs up, sit a bit, the woman sits up, drivrer rotates the tires toward the victim and hits her again.

Would it be possible for a local business to donate (maybe Pierson’s ??), or a local non-profit to purchase, say, a hundred or so lightweight fluorescent vests for the folks who walk around at night? Sure, not all would wear one, but still if most did it would help with visibility and hopefully reduce this kind of recurring tragedy.

how does that change the average driver who flee’s the scene of a hit and run from not driving while impaired? Eureka needs more DUI checkpoints and active vehicle code violation harassment.

The average driver is not impaired any more than the average pedestrian. But even if a driver were impaired, a florescent vest might be better able to catch their attention. Vern’s idea has its problems- I can’t see homeless people under the influence choosing to wear one- but it is at least a creative thought on a real problem.

The only clearlynimpaired person was the victim. The driver might have been by the video doesn’t indicate that.

Drivers hit construction workers wearing high viz vests all the damn time. Somebody hit another car and crashed into a house about a block from where this happened last month during the middle of a sunny day.

This driver wasn’t looking and didn’t care, a fluorescent vest wouldn’t have made a difference.

To start with it’s always terrible when anyone is injured. As someone who walks regularly at night I think this pedestrian is taking a lot of unesseccary risks. This lady appears to be walking fully IN the street and paying no attention to vehicular traffic. Obviously, the driver should have done a number of things differently, but so should have the pedestrian! As someone who regularly drives around the city I have had to dodge people fully walking into the street in front of me, jumping out from between parked cars. Even last night, I turned onto buhne from Harrison and there was a woman walking in the midle of the road in the dark. We were both fortunate that I was paying close enough attention to avoid her, but slightly different circumstances and I might not have seen her. Yes, drivers need to be careful, but so do pedestrians. Don’t walk in the street!

That lady was not a transient, she was with her husband in a wheelchair. (See the lost coast). That car hit a person in a 30 mph zone, hovered over her and ran her over a second time and ran. There is no excuse for that. This not a video game.

What article is that? I read the lost coast outpost and saw nothing about her status. But whether she was or not, she certainly was impaired enough to be wandering in the street as was her husband in the wheelchair despite all the handicapped crossings available.

Not a popular opinion, but the driver was using due caution and the pedestrian was at fault. The driver slowed down to safely get around the guy in the wheelchair. The pedestrian was staggering across Hawthorn in the curb lane, not by any stretch in an unmarked crosswalk. The driver set up the turn to be in the correct lane at the stop line, and it is understandable that they would not notice someone walking erratically in the curb lane, wearing dark clothing, and outside of their headlight beams. Maybe the driver had some reason to fear an encounter with police after the accident, or maybe they made a rash decision in disgust and frustration after experiencing the double dose of foolhardiness that caused the accident.

Shouldn’t they have called 911 so she didn’t die? The fastest the first responders can get to a victim, the more chance they have of saving the person’s life. Just call 911 first then worry about that other stuff later. That comment is the most cold hearted in the entire thread. Some lady is hit by a ton of steel, probably has internal injuries, and somebody is worried about an encounter by the police?

Yes, the driver’s decision after the accident was wrong. There is no contradiction between that and the pedestrian’s actions being the main cause of the accident. Concern for the pedestrian after the accident does not change that.

Whoever thinks that the woman is in a legal crosswalk is obviously as drunk as she must have been. In the beginning of the video the pedestrian is clear as day seen swerving as she walks down THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!! I’m not excusing the driver for taking off, but had this person been using the sidewalk instead of walking down the street shit face drunk or high and paid attention to her surroundings, this could have been prevented. I’d be willing to bet that 75% of the people who are hit by cars out here wouldn’t pass a sobriety test. Yes, the driver is wrong for not stopping but people need to start holding these drunk ass pedestrians accountable for getting their own drunk asses hit because they’re too fucked up to pay attention to what’s going on around them while being where they’re not supposed to be. Sorry not sorry.

Where is the need for good old human compassion. Why not stop and see if the person is injured or needs to go to hospital. How anyone can sleep at night knowing they lack common sense to do the right thing is something I see lacking in all these hit and runs recently. Wow thanks for being so senseless I hope your loved ones are not a victim of such .

The driver belongs in jail, period. And moreover In my opinion this is felony assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving. Possibly no intent the first time they ran over the poor lady, but then pausing proceeding forward, running over at least part of that poor lady the second time is intent. Why didn’t they just shut the engine off and call for help? At 13 seconds into the video, the headlights light up that poor lady like the 4th of July, making her very visible. The driver needs to turn themself in, one of the neighbor’s cameras will capture the license plate.

No, it was not felony assault with a deadly weapon. You should have read more carefully before you accused the driver of running over the victim a second time:

“Underhill repeated, ‘They backed up and go around her and then sped off.”

Clear?

Also, the woman was starting to sit up when the car left and did not have any limbs extended in the path of the vehicle. She sits up as the car is leaving, which is definitely not the action of someone who has just had an arm run over. Seeing the woman move may have fed the driver’s rationalization that it was ok to leave, even though it was illegal.

The driver DID NOT back up to go around her. Watch the front wheels as the rotate toward the victim. And hits her again. The driver hit this woman straight on middle of the vehicle and in the other lane.

The woman being homeless doesn’t appear to be a factor in her being hit. Why include that detail?
